A comonad for Grothendieck fibrations

We prove that cloven Grothendieck fibrations over a fixed base $\ct{B}$ are the pseudo-coalgebras for a lax idempotent 2-comonad on $\ct{Cat}/\ct{B}$. We show this via an original observation that the known colax idempotent 2-monad for fibrations over a fixed base has a right 2-adjoint. As an important consequence, we obtain an original cofree construction of a fibration on a functor. We also give a new, conceptual proof of the fact that the forgetful 2-functor from split fibrations to cloven fibrations over a fixed base has both a left 2-adjoint and a right 2-adjoint, in terms of coherence phenomena of strictification of pseudo-(co)algebras. The 2-monad for fibrations yields the left splitting and the 2-comonad yields the right splitting. Moreover, we show that the constructions induced by these coherence theorems recover Giraud's explicit constructions of the left and the right splittings.

Fibered Categories a la Jean Benabou

These are notes about the theory of Fibred Categories as I have learned it from Jean Benabou. I also have used results from the Thesis of Jean-Luc Moens from 1982 in those sections where I discuss the fibered view of geometric morphisms. Thus, almost all of the contents is not due to me but most of it cannot be found in the literature since Benabou has given many talks on it but most of his work on fibered categories is unpublished. But I am solely responsible for the mistakes and for misrepresentations of his views. And certainly these notes do not cover all the work he has done on fibered categories. I just try to explain the most important notions he has come up with in a way trying to be as close as possible to his intentions and intuitions. I started these notes in 1999 when I gave a course on some of the material at a workshop in Munich. They have developed quite a lot over the years and I have tried to include most of the things I want to remember.

Simplicial sets inside cubical sets

As observed recently by various people the topos $\mathbf{sSet}$ of simplicial sets appears as essential subtopos of a topos $\mathbf{cSet}$ of cubical sets, namely presheaves over the category $\mathbf{FL}$ of finite lattices and monotone maps between them. The latter is a variant of the cubical model of type theory due to Cohen et al. for the purpose of providing a model for a variant of type theory which validates Voevodsky's Univalence Axiom and has computational meaning. Our contribution consists in constructing in $\mathbf{cSet}$ a fibrant univalent universe for those types that are sheaves. This makes it possible to consider $\mathbf{sSet}$ as a submodel of $\mathbf{cSet}$ for univalent Martin-Löf type theory. Furthermore, we address the question whether the type-theoretic Cisinski model structure considered on $\mathbf{cSet}$ coincides with the test model structure, the latter of which models the homotopy theory of spaces. We do not provide an answer to this open problem, but instead give a reformulation in terms of the adjoint functors at hand.

Computability in Basic Quantum Mechanics

The basic notions of quantum mechanics are formulated in terms of separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. In terms of the Hilbert lattice $\mathcal{L}$ of closed linear subspaces of $\mathcal{H}$ the notions of state and observable can be formulated as kinds of measures as in [21]. The aim of this paper is to show that there is a good notion of computability for these data structures in the sense of Weihrauch's Type Two Effectivity (TTE) [26]. Instead of explicitly exhibiting admissible representations for the data types under consideration we show that they do live within the category $\mathbf{QCB}_0$ which is equivalent to the category $\mathbf{AdmRep}$ of admissible representations and continuously realizable maps between them. For this purpose in case of observables we have to replace measures by valuations which allows us to prove an effective version of von Neumann's Spectral Theorem.

Observationally-induced algebras in Domain Theory

In this paper we revise and simplify the notion of observationally induced algebra introduced by Simpson and Schroeder for the purpose of modelling computational effects in the particular case where the ambient category is given by classical domain theory. As examples of the general framework we consider the various powerdomains. For the particular case of the Plotkin powerdomain the general recipe leads to a somewhat unexpected result which, however, makes sense from a Computer Science perspective. We analyze this "deviation" and show how to reobtain the original Plotkin powerdomain by imposing further conditions previously considered by R.~Heckmann and J.~Goubault-Larrecq.

Models of Intuitionistic Set Theory in Subtoposes of Nested Realizability Toposes

With every pca $\mathcal{A}$ and subpca $\mathcal{A}_\#$ we associate the nested realizability topos $\mathsf{RT}(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{A}_\#)$ within which we identify a class of small maps $\mathcal{S}$ giving rise to a model of intuitionistic set theory within $\mathsf{RT}(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{A}_\#)$. For every subtopos $\mathcal{E}$ of such a nested realizability topos we construct an induced class $\mathcal{S_E}$ of small maps in $\mathcal{E}$ giving rise to a model of intuitionistic set theory within $\mathcal{E}$. This covers relative realizability toposes, modified relative realizability toposes, the modified realizability topos and van den Berg's recent Herbrand topos.
