A stratified jet model for AGN emission in the two-flow paradigm

High-energy emission of extragalactic objects is known to take place in relativistic jets, but the nature, the location, and the emission processes of the emitting particles are still unknown. One of the models proposed to explain the formation of relativistic ejections and their associated non-thermal emission is the two-flow model, where the jets are supposed to be composed of two different flows, a mildly relativistic baryonic jet surrounding a fast, relativistically moving electron-positron plasma. Here we present the simulation of the emission of such a structure taking into account the main sources of photons that are present in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We reproduce the broadband spectra of radio-loud AGNs with a detailed model of emission taking into account synchrotron and inverse-Compton emission by a relativistically moving beam of electron-positron, heated by a surrounding turbulent baryonic jet. We compute the density and energy distribution of a relativistic pair plasma all along a jet, taking into account the synchrotron and inverse-Compton process on the various photon sources present in the core of the AGN, as well as the pair creation and annihilation processes. We use semi-analytical approximations to quickly compute the inverse-Compton process on a thermal photon distribution with any anisotropic angular distribution. The anisotropy of the photon field is also responsible for the bulk acceleration of the pair plasma through the "Compton rocket" effect, thus imposing the plasma velocity along the jet. As an example, the simulated emerging spectrum is compared to the broadband emission of 3C273. In the case of 3C273, we obtain an excellent fit of the average broadband energy distribution by assuming physical parameters compatible with known estimates.

Polynomial data compression for large-scale physics experiments

The new generation research experiments will introduce huge data surge to a continuously increasing data production by current experiments. This data surge necessitates efficient compression techniques. These compression techniques must guarantee an optimum tradeoff between compression rate and the corresponding compression /decompression speed ratio without affecting the data integrity. This work presents a lossless compression algorithm to compress physics data generated by Astronomy, Astrophysics and Particle Physics experiments. The developed algorithms have been tuned and tested on a real use case~: the next generation ground-based high-energy gamma ray observatory, Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), requiring important compression performance. Stand-alone, the proposed compression method is very fast and reasonably efficient. Alternatively, applied as pre-compression algorithm, it can accelerate common methods like LZMA, keeping close performance.

pschitt! - A Python package for the modelling of atmoSpheric Showers and CHerenkov Imaging Terrestrial Telescopes

The simulation of atmospheric showers through Monte-Carlo processes as well as their projection into Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) is long and very computing intensive. As these simulations are the most advanced ones from a physics point of view, they are not suited for simple tests. Here we present a Python package developed in order to model atmospheric showers using different profiles and to image them with an array of IACT. This allows for first order studies of the influence of the primary photon energy and angular direction on the stereoscopic images. Its simplicity also makes it convenient for public dissemination and outreach as well as for teaching purposes. This package has been developed to make the most out of the simplicity of Python but has also been optimised for fast calculations. It is developed in the framework of the ASTERICS H2020 project and as such is available as an open-source software.

Gammapy - A prototype for the CTA science tools

Gammapy is a Python package for high-level gamma-ray data analysis built on Numpy, Scipy and Astropy. It enables us to analyze gamma-ray data and to create sky images, spectra and lightcurves, from event lists and instrument response information, and to determine the position, morphology and spectra of gamma-ray sources. So far Gammapy has mostly been used to analyze data from H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT, and is now being used for the simulation and analysis of observations from the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We have proposed Gammapy as a prototype for the CTA science tools. This contribution gives an overview of the Gammapy package and project and shows an analysis application example with simulated CTA data.

Variation of bulk Lorentz factor in AGN jets due to Compton rocket in a complex photon field

Radio-loud active galactic nuclei are among the most powerful objects in the universe. In these objects, most of the emission comes from relativistic jets getting their power from the accretion of matter onto supermassive black holes. However, despite the number of studies, a jet's acceleration to relativistic speeds is still poorly understood. It is widely known that jets contain relativistic particles that emit radiation through several physical processes, one of them being the inverse Compton scattering of photons coming from external sources. In the case of a plasma composed of electrons and positrons continuously heated by the turbulence, inverse Compton scattering can lead to relativistic bulk motions through the Compton rocket effect. We investigate this process and compute the resulting bulk Lorentz factor in the complex photon field of an AGN composed of several external photon sources. We consider various sources here: the accretion disk, the dusty torus, and the broad line region. We take their geometry and anisotropy carefully into account in order to numerically compute the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet at every altitude. The study, made for a broad range of parameters, shows interesting and unexpected behaviors of the bulk Lorentz factor, exhibiting acceleration and deceleration zones in the jet. We investigate the patterns of the bulk Lorentz factor along the jet depending on the source sizes and on the observation angle and we finally show that these patterns can induce variability in the AGN emission with timescales going from hours to months.

Influence of an AGN complex photon field on the jet bulk Lorentz factor through Compton rocket effect

AGNs jets are known to display relativistic motion on parsec scales but the accelerating mechanism as well as the exact bulk Lorentz factor of the flow are still a matter of discussion. Under certain assumptions, a plasma can be accelerated to relativistic speeds through the Compton rocket effect. Here, we study this effect and the resulting bulk Lorentz factor in the complex environment of an AGN including various external sources. This is the proceedings to the IAU Symposium 313.
