Family Unification, Exotic States and Light Magnetic Monopoles

Models with fermions in bifundamental representations can lead naturally to family unification as opposed to family replication. Such models typically predict (exotic) color singlet states with fractional electric charge, and magnetic monopoles with multiple Dirac charge. The exotics may be at the TeV scale, and relatively light magnetic monopoles (greater than about 10^7 GeV) can be present in the galaxy with abundance near the Parker bound. We focus on three family SU(4)XSU(3)XSU(3) models.

Asymmetric inflation: exact solutions

We provide exact solutions to the Einstein equations when the Universe contains vacuum energy plus a uniform arrangements of magnetic fields, strings, or domain walls. Such a universe has planar symmetry, i. e., it is homogeneous but, not isotropic. Further exact solutions are obtained when dust is included and approximate solutions are found for $w\not=0$ matter. These cosmologies also have planar symmetry. These results may eventually be used to explain some features in the WMAP data. The magnetic field case is the easiest to motivate and has the highest possibility of yielding reliable constraints on observational cosmology.

Extension of Monster Moonshine to c=24k Conformal Field Theories

We present a family of conformal field theories (or candidates for CFTs) that is build on extremal partition functions. Spectra of these theories can be decomposed into the irreducible representations of the Fischer-Griess Monster sporadic group. Interesting periodicities in the coefficients of extremal partition functions are observed and interpreted as a possible extension of Monster moonshine to c=24k holomorphic field theories.

Long-Wavelength Modes of Cosmological Scalar Fields

We give a numerical analysis of long-wavelength modes in the WKB approximation of cosmological scalar fields coupled to gravity via $ξϕ^{2}R$. Massless fields are coupled conformally at $ξ=1/6$. Conformality can be preserved for fields of nonzero mass by shifting $ξ$. We discuss implications for density perturbations.

Transformations among large c conformal field theories

We show that there is a set of transformations that relates all of the 24 dimensional even self-dual (Niemeier) lattices, and also leads to non-lattice objects that however cannot be interpreted as a basis for the construction of holomorphic conformal field theory. In the second part of this paper, we extend our observations to higher dimensional conformal field theories build on extremal partition functions, where we generate c=24k theories with spectra decomposable into the irreducible representations of the Fischer-Griess Monster. We observe interesting periodicities in the coefficients of extremal partition functions and characters of the extremal vertex operator algebras.

Primordial Black Holes, Hawking Radiation and the Early Universe

The 511 keV gamma emission from the galactic core may originate from a high concentration ($\sim 10^{22}$) of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the core each of whose Hawking radiation includes $\sim 10^{21}$ positrons per second. The PBHs we consider are taken as near the lightest with longevity greater than the age of the universe (mass $\sim 10^{12}$ kg; Schwarzschild radius $\sim 1$ fm). These PBHs contribute only a small fraction of cold dark matter, $Ω_{PBH} \sim 10^{-8}$. This speculative hypothesis, if confirmed implies the simultaneous discovery of Hawking radiation and an early universe phase transition.

The eccentric universe

For a universe containing cosmological constant together with uniform arrangements of magnetic fields, strings, or domain walls, exact solutions to the Einstein equations are shown to lead to a universe with ellipsoidal expansion. The magnetic field case is the easiest to motivate and has the highest possibility of finding application in observational cosmology.

Universal energy spectrum of tight knots and links in physics

We argue that a systems of tightly knotted, linked, or braided flux tubes will have a universal mass-energy spectrum, since the length of fixed radius flux tubes depend only on the topology of the configuration. We motivate the discussion with plasma physics examples, then concentrate on the model of glueballs as knotted QCD flux tubes. Other applications will also be discussed.

Space-Time Foam and Cosmic-Ray Interactions

It has been proposed that propagation of cosmic rays at extreme-energy may be sensitive to Lorentz-violating metric fluctuations (``foam''). We investigate the changes in interaction thresholds for cosmic-rays and gamma-rays interacting on the CMB and IR backgrounds, for a class of stochastic models of spacetime foam. The strength of the foam is characterized by the factor (E/M_P)^a, where ``a'' is a phenomenological suppression parameter. We find that there exists a critical value of ``a'' (dependent on the particular reaction), below which the threshold energy can only be lowered, and above which the threshold energy may be raised, but at most by a factor of two. Thus, it does not appear possible in this class of models to extend cosmic-ray spectra significantly beyond their classical absorption energies. However, the lower thresholds resulting from foam may have signatures in the cosmic-ray spectrum. We also find that cosmic-ray energies cannot exceed the fundamental Planck scale, and so set a lower bound of 10^8 TeV on the context of this model for the scale of gravity. Finally, we comment in the apparent non-conservation of particle energy-momentum, and speculate on its re-emergence as dark energy in the foamy vacuum.

Classification of SUSY and non-SUSY Chiral Models from Abelian Orbifolds AdS/CFT

We classify compactifications of the type IIB superstring on AdS_{5} x S^{5}/Γ, where Γis an abelian group of order n<= 12. Appropriate embedding of Γin the isometry of S^5 yields both SUSY and non-SUSY chiral models that can contain the minimal SUSY standard model or the standard model. New non-SUSY three family models with Γ=Z_8 are introduced, which lead to the right Weinberg angle for TeV trinification.

Inflation and Generalized O'Raifeartaigh SUSY models

Thermal inflation usually requires an inflationary potential with nonrenormalizable operators (NROs). We demonstrate how O'Raifeartaigh models with or without NROs can provide thermal inflation and a solution to the moduli problem, as well as provide SUSY breaking. We then discuss a scenario where generalized O'Raifeartaigh potentials (with NROs) are included in a SUGRA where the supergravity and O'Raifeartaigh potentials provide negative and a positive contributions to the cosmological constant respectively. Tuning these contributions to nearly cancel can provide the present value of the dark energy.

We develop a robust version of the MSSM from a $Z_{12}$ orbifolded AdS/CFT, with natural low scale unification and briefly discuss cosmology in this testable model.

Consistency Conditions for AdS/CFT Embeddings

The group embeddings used in orbifolding the AdS/CFT correspondence to arrive at quiver gauge field theories are studied for both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric cases. For an orbifold $AdS_5 \times S^5/Γ$ the conditions for embeddings of the finite group $Γ$ in the $SU(4) \sim O(6)$ isotropy of $S^5$ are stated in the form of consistency rules, both for Abelian and Non-Abelian $Γ$.

A model of glueballs

We model the observed glueball mass spectrum in terms of energies for tightly knotted and linked QCD flux tubes. The data is fit well with one parameter. We predict additional glueball masses.

Construction of multi-instantons in eight dimensions

We consider an eight-dimensional local octonionic theory with the seven-sphere playing the role of the gauge group. Duality conditions for two- and four-forms in eight dimensions are related. Dual fields--octonionic instantons--solve an 8D generalization of the Yang-Mills equation. Modifying the ADHM construction of 4D instantons, we find general $k$-instanton 8D solutions which depends on $16k-7$ effective parameters.

Signatures for a Cosmic Flux of Magnetic Monopoles

Any early universe phase transition occurring after inflation has the potential to populate the universe with relic magnetic monopoles. Observations of galactic magnetic fields, as well as observations matched with models for extragalactic magnetic fields, lead to the conclusion that monopoles of mass $\lsim 10^{15}$ GeV are accelerated in these fields to relativistic velocities. We explore the possible signatures of a cosmic flux of relativistic monopoles impinging on the earth. The electromagnetically-induced signatures of monopoles are reliable. The hadronically-induced signatures are highly model-dependent. Among our findings are (i) the electromagnetic energy losses of monopoles continuously initiate a protracted shower of small intensity; (ii) monopoles may traverse the earth's diameter, making them a probe of the earth's interior structure; (iii) in addition to the direct monopole Cherenkov signal presently employed, a very attractive search strategy for monopoles is detection of their radio-Cherenkov signal produced by the coherent charge-excess in the $e^+-e^-$ shower - in fact, Cherenkov-detectors have the potential to discover a monopole flux (or limit it) several orders of magnitude below the theoretical Parker limit of $10^{-15}/\rm{cm}^2$/s/sr; (iv) it is conceivable (but not compelling) that bound states of colored monopoles may be the primary particles initiating the air showers observed above the GZK cutoff.
