A group theoretical version of Hilbert's theorem 90

It is shown that for a normal subgroup $N$ of a group $G$, $G/N$ cyclic, the kernel of the map $N^{\mathrm{ab}}\to G^{\mathrm{ab}}$ satisfies the classical Hilbert 90 property (cf. Thm. A). As a consequence, if $G$ is finitely generated, $|G:N|<\infty$, and all abelian groups $H^{\mathrm{ab}}$, $N\subseteq H\subseteq G$, are torsion free, then $N^{\mathrm{ab}}$ must be a pseudo permutation module for $G/N$ (cf. Thm. B). From Theorem A one also deduces a non-trivial relation between the order of the transfer kernel and co-kernel which determines the Hilbert-Suzuki multiplier (cf. Thm. C). Translated into a number theoretic context one obtains a strong form of Hilbert's theorem 94. In case that $G$ is finitely generated and $N$ has prime index $p$ in $G$ there holds a "generalized Schreier formula" involving the torsion free ranks of $G$ and $N$ and the ratio of the order of the transfer kernel and co-kernel (cf. Thm. D).

Restricted Lie algebras with maximal 0-PIM

In this paper we show that the projective cover of the trivial irreducible module of a finite-dimensional solvable restricted Lie algebra is induced from the one-dimensional trivial module of a maximal torus. As a consequence, we obtain that the number of the isomorphism classes of irreducible modules with a fixed p-character for a finite-dimensional solvable restricted Lie algebra L is bounded above by p^MT(L), where MT(L) denotes the largest dimension of a torus in L. Finally, we prove that in characteristic p>3 the projective cover of the trivial irreducible L-module is only induced from the one-dimensional trivial module of a torus of maximal dimension if L is solvable.

Graded Lie algebras of type FP

It will be shown that every N-graded Lie algebra generated in degree 1 of type FP with entropy less or equal to 1 must be finite-dimensional (cf. Thm. A). As a consequence every Koszul Lie algebra with entropy less or equal to 1 must be abelian (cf. Cor. C). These results are obtained from a generalized Witt formula (cf. Thm. D) for N-graded Lie algebras of type FP and the analysis of necklace polynomials at roots of unity.

The projective dimension of profinite modules for pro-p groups

The homology groups introduced by A. Brumer can be used to establish a criterion ensuring that a profinite $\mathbb{F}_p[[G]]$-module of a pro-$p$ group $G$ has projective dimension $d<\infty$ (cf. Thm. A). This criterion yields a new characterization of free pro-$p$ groups (cf. Cor. B). Applied to a semi-direct factor $G\to\mathbb{Z}_p\to G$ isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p$ which defines a non-trivial end in the sense of A.A. Korenev one concludes that the closure of the normal closure of the image of $σ$ is a free pro-$p$ subgroup (cf. Thm. C). From this result we will deduce a structure theorem (cf. Thm. D) for finitely generated pro-$p$ groups with infinitely many ends.

Split abelian chief factors and first degree cohomology for Lie algebras

In this paper we investigate the relation between the multiplicities of split abelian chief factors of finite-dimensional Lie algebras and first degree cohomology. In particular, we obtain a characterization of modular solvable Lie algebras in terms of the vanishing of first degree cohomology or in terms of the multiplicities of split abelian chief factors. The analogues of these results are well known in the modular representation theory of finite groups. An important tool in the proof of these results is a refinement of a non-vanishing theorem of Seligman for the first degree cohomology of non-solvable finite-dimensional Lie algebras in prime characteristic. As applications we derive several results in the representation theory of restricted Lie algebras related to the principal block and the projective cover of the trivial irreducible module of a finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra. In particular, we obtain a characterization of solvable restricted Lie algebras in terms of the second Loewy layer of the projective cover of the trivial irreducible module.

Split strongly abelian p-chief factors and first degree restricted cohomology

In this paper we investigate the relation between the multiplicities of split strongly abelian p-chief factors of finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebras and first degree restricted cohomology. As an application we obtain a characterization of solvable restricted Lie algebras in terms of the multiplicities of split strongly abelian p-chief factors. Moreover, we derive some results in the representation theory of restricted Lie algebras related to the principal block and the projective cover of the trivial irreducible module of a finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra. In particular, we obtain a characterization of finite-dimensional solvable restricted Lie algebras in terms of the second Loewy layer of the projective cover of the trivial irreducible module. The analogues of these results are well known in the modular representation theory of finite groups.

Lattices and cohomological Mackey functors for finite cyclic p-groups

For a finite cyclic p-group G and a discrete valuation domain R of characteristic 0 with maximal ideal pR the R[G]-permutation modules are characterized in terms of the vanishing of first degree cohomology on all sub- groups (cf. Thm. A). As a consequence any R[G]-lattice can be presented by R[G]-permutation modules (cf. Thm. C). The proof of these results is based on a detailed analysis of the category of cohomological G-Mackey functors with values in the category of R-modules. It is shown that this category has global dimension 3 (cf. Thm. E). A crucial step in the proof of Theorem E is the fact that a gentle R-order category (with parameter p) has global dimension less or equal to 2 (cf. Thm. D).

Abstract commensurators of profinite groups

In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the abstract commensurators of profinite groups. The abstract commensurator of a profinite group $G$ is a group $Comm(G)$ which depends only on the commensurability class of $G$. We study various properties of $Comm(G)$; in particular, we find two natural ways to turn it into a topological group. We also use $Comm(G)$ to study topological groups which contain $G$ as an open subgroup (all such groups are totally disconnected and locally compact). For instance, we construct a topologically simple group which contains the pro-2 completion of the Grigorchuk group as an open subgroup. On the other hand, we show that some profinite groups cannot be embedded as open subgroups of compactly generated topologically simple groups. Several celebrated rigidity theorems, like Pink's analogue of Mostow's strong rigidity theorem for simple algebraic groups defined over local fields and the Neukirch-Uchida theorem, can be reformulated as structure theorems for the commensurators of certain profinite groups.

Outer restricted derivations of nilpotent restricted Lie algebras

In this paper we prove that every finite-dimensional nilpotent restricted Lie algebra over a field of prime characteristic has an outer restricted derivation whose square is zero unless the restricted Lie algebra is a torus or it is one-dimensional or it is isomorphic to the three-dimensional Heisenberg algebra in characteristic two as an ordinary Lie algebra. This result is the restricted analogue of a result of Tôgô on the existence of nilpotent outer derivations of ordinary nilpotent Lie algebras in arbitrary characteristic and the Lie-theoretic analogue of a classical group-theoretic result of Gaschütz on the existence of $p$-power automorphisms of $p$-groups. As a consequence we obtain that every finite-dimensional non-toral nilpotent restricted Lie algebra has an outer restricted derivation.
