Hierarchies of Length Scale Based Typology in Anisotropic Multiband Superconductor

Since Ginzburg and Landau's seminal work in 1950 superconducting states have been classified by the hierarchy of the fundamental length scales of the theory; the magnetic field penetration lengths and coherence lengths. In the simplest single-component case they form a dimensionless ratio κ. As pointed out by Ginzburg in 1952, in general the ratio depends on the direction of the applied magnetic field due to material anisotropies. Single component materials can therefore display type-1 superconductivity when the field is applied in one direction and type-2 when the field is applied in a different direction. In this paper we expand the above length scale analysis to anisotropic multi-component superconductors, that can have multiple coherence lengths as well as multiple magnetic field penetration lengths, leading to unconvential length scale hierarchies. We demonstrate that the anisotropies in multi-band superconductors cannot in general be rescaled, leading to new regimes with various mixed hierarchies in different directions. For example, a regime is possible, where for a field applied in a certain direction coherence lengths are smaller than the magnetic field penetration lengths in one of the perpendicular directions, where as the penetration lengths are lager in the another direction. We demonstrate a new regime, where vortices form stripes in the direction where coherence lengths exceed the magnetic field penetration length and vortex cores overlap, while the vortex stripes repel each other in the orthogonal direction where the magnetic field penetration length exceeds the coherence lengths.

Comment on the paper by D. Efremov and Yu.N. Ovchinnikov "Singular ground state of multiband inhomogeneous superconductors", Phys. Rev. B 99, 224508 (2019)

We show that the conclusion reported in Ref. 1, that there are no spontaneous magnetic fields in multiband superconductors that break time reversal symmetry, is incorrect. We demonstrate that the state proposed in Ref. 1 is not a solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the considered model. The reason is that in Ref. 1 one of the Ginzburg-Landau equations is neglected and substituted by the spurious zero current restriction. This restriction together with all of the Ginzburg-Landau equations leads to an overdetermined system which does not have a solution. This inconsistency invalidates all the results of the paper.

Skyrmion and Baby Skyrmion Formation from Domain Walls

We numerically simulate the formation of $(2+1)$-dimensional baby Skyrmions and $(3+1)$-dimensional $SU(2)$ Skyrmions from domain wall collisions. It has been suggested that Skyrmion, anti-Skyrmion pairs can be produced from the interaction of two domain walls. This is confirmed, however it is also demonstrated that the process can require quite precise conditions. An alternative, more stable, formation process is proposed as the interaction of more than two segments of domain wall. This is simulated, requiring far less constraints on the initial conditions used. Finally domain wall networks are considered, demonstrating how Skyrmions may be produced in a complex dynamical system. We show that the local topological charge configurations, formed within the system, are countered by opposite winding on the boundary of the system to conserve topological charge.

Baby Skyrmions in AdS

We study the baby Skyrme model in a pure AdS background without a mass term. The tail decays and scalings of massless radial solutions are demonstrated to take a similar form to those of the massive flat space model, with the AdS curvature playing a similar role to the flat space pion mass. We also numerically find minimal energy solutions for a range of higher topological charges and find that they form concentric ring-like solutions. Popcorn transitions (named in analogy with studies of toy models of holographic QCD) from an n layer to an n+1-layer configuration are observed at topological charges 9 and 27 and further popcorn transitions for higher charges are predicted. Finally, a point-particle approximation for the model is derived and used to successfully predict the ring structures and popcorn transitions for higher charge solitons.

Hyperbolic Skyrmions

We investigate SU(2) Skyrmions in hyperbolic space, by computing numerical solutions of the nonlinear field equation. We first demonstrate the link between increasing curvature and the accuracy of the rational map approximation to the minimal energy static solutions. We investigate the link between Skyrmions with massive pions in Euclidean space and the massless case in hyperbolic space, by relating curvature to the pion mass. Crystal chunks are found to be the minimal energy solution for increased curvature as well as increased mass of the model. The dynamics of the hyperbolic model are also simulated, with the similarities and differences to the Euclidean model noted.

Broken planar Skyrmions -- statics and dynamics

The broken planar Skyrme model is a theory that breaks global O(3) symmetry to the dihedral group D_N. It has been shown that the single soliton solution is formed of N constituent parts, named partons, that are topologically confined. The multi-soliton solutions have already been computed for N = 3 and were shown to be related to polyiamonds. We extend this for larger N and demonstrate that this polyform structure continues (planar figures formed by regular N-gons joined along their edges, of which polyiamonds are the N=3 subset). Furthermore, we numerically simulate the dynamics of this model for the first time. It will be demonstrated that the time dependent behaviour of these solutions can be broken down into the interactions of its constituent partons. The results are then compared with those of the standard planar Skyrme model.
