Processing of Photonic Crystal Nanocavity for Quantum Information in Diamond

The realization of photonic crystals (PC) in diamond is of major importance for the entire field of spintronics based on fluorescent centers in diamond. The processing steps for the case of diamond differ from those commonly used, due to the extreme chemical and mechanical properties of this material. The present work summarizes the state of the art in the realization of PC's in diamond. It is based on the creation of a free standing diamond membrane into which the desired nano-sized patterns are milled by the use of Focused-Ion-Beam (FIB). The optimal fabrication-oriented structure parameters are predicted by simulations. The milling strategies, the method of formation the diamond membrane, recipes for dielectric material-manipulation in FIB and optical characterization constraints are discussed in conjunction with their implication on PC cavity design. The thus produced structures are characterized via confocal photoluminescence.

Pressure versus concentration tuning of the superconductivity in Ba(Fe(1-x)Cox)2As2

In the iron arsenide compound BaFe2As2, superconductivity can be induced either by a variation of its chemical composition, e.g., by replacing Fe with Co, or by a reduction of the unit-cell volume through the application of hydrostatic pressure p. In contrast to chemical substitutions, pressure is expected to introduce no additional disorder into the lattice. We compare the two routes to superconductivity by measuring the p dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of Ba(Fe(1-x)Cox)2As2 single crystals with different Co content x. We find that Tc(p) of underdoped and overdoped samples increases and decreases, respectively, tracking quantitatively the Tc(x) dependence. To clarify to which extent the superconductivity relies on distinct structural features we analyze the crystal structure as a function of x and compare the results with that of BaFe2As2 under pressure.

Two-dimensional superconductivity at a Mott-Insulator/Band-Insulator interface: LaTiO3/SrTiO3

Transition metal oxides display a great variety of quantum electronic behaviours where correlations often play an important role. The achievement of high quality epitaxial interfaces involving such materials gives a unique opportunity to engineer artificial structures where new electronic orders take place. One of the most striking result in this area is the recent observation of a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between a strongly correlated Mott insulator LaTiO3 and a band insulator SrTiO3. The mechanism responsible for such a behaviour is still under debate. In particular, the influence of the nature of the insulator has to be clarified. Here we show that despite the expected electronic correlations, LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures undergo a superconducting transition at a critical temperature Tc=300 mK. We have found that the superconducting electron gas is confined over a typical thickness of 12 nm. We discuss the electronic properties of this system and review the possible scenarios.

Hyperdeterminants as integrable discrete systems

We give the basic definitions and some theoretical results about hyperdeterminants, introduced by A. Cayley in 1845. We prove integrability (understood as 4d-consistency) of a nonlinear difference equation defined by the 2x2x2-hyperdeterminant. This result gives rise to the following hypothesis: the difference equations defined by hyperdeterminants of any size are integrable. We show that this hypothesis already fails in the case of the 2x2x2x2-hyperdeterminant.

Large anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependencies of Tc in single crystalline Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2

Using high-resolution dilatometry, we study the thermodynamic response of the lattice parameters to superconducting order in a self-flux grown Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2 single crystal. The uniaxial pressure dependencies of the critical temperature of Tc, calculated using our thermal expansion and specific heat data via the Ehrenfest relation, are found to be quite large and very anisotropic (dTc/dpa = 3.1(1) K/GPa and dTc/dpc = - 7.0(2) K/GPa). Our results show that there is a strong coupling of the c/a ratio to superconducting order, which demonstrates that Tc is far from the optimal value. A surprising similarity with the uniaxial pressure effects in several other layered superconductors is discussed.

$G_2$ generating technique for minimal D=5 supergravity and black rings

A solution generating technique is developed for D=5 minimal supergravity with two commuting Killing vectors based on the $G_2$ U-duality arising in the reduction of the theory to three dimensions. The target space of the corresponding 3-dimensional sigma-model is the coset $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2,R)\times SL(2,R))$. Its isometries constitute the set of solution generating symmetries. These include two electric and two magnetic Harrison transformations with the corresponding two pairs of gauge transformations, three $SL(2,R) S$-duality transformations, and the three gravitational scale, gauge and Ehlers transformations (altogether 14). We construct a representation of the coset in terms of $7\times 7$ matrices realizing the automorphisms of split octonions. Generating a new solution amounts to transforming the coset matrices by one-parametric subgroups of $G_{2(2)}$ and subsequently solving the dualization equations. Using this formalism we derive a new charged black ring solution with two independent parameters of rotation.

Invertible Mappings of Nonlinear PDEs to Linear PDEs Through Admitted Conservation Laws

An algorithmic method using conservation law multipliers is introduced that yields necessary and sufficient conditions to find invertible mappings of a given nonlinear PDE to some linear PDE and to construct such a mapping when it exists. Previous methods yielded such conditions from admitted point or contact symmetries of the nonlinear PDE. Through examples, these two linearization approaches are contrasted.

Supersymmetric Representations and Integrable Fermionic Extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq Equations

We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equation, and unusual properties of a recursion operator for its Hamiltonian symmetries are described. Also, we construct a three-parametric supersymmetric system that incorporates the Boussinesq equation with dispersion and dissipation but never retracts to it for any values of the parameters.

Classification of polynomial integrable systems of mixed scalar and vector evolution equations. I

We perform a classification of integrable systems of mixed scalar and vector evolution equations with respect to higher symmetries. We consider polynomial systems that are homogeneous under a suitable weighting of variables. This paper deals with the KdV weighting, the Burgers (or potential KdV or modified KdV) weighting, the Ibragimov-Shabat weighting and two unfamiliar weightings. The case of other weightings will be studied in a subsequent paper. Making an ansatz for undetermined coefficients and using a computer package for solving bilinear algebraic systems, we give the complete lists of 2nd order systems with a 3rd order or a 4th order symmetry and 3rd order systems with a 5th order symmetry. For all but a few systems in the lists, we show that the system (or, at least a subsystem of it) admits either a Lax representation or a linearizing transformation. A thorough comparison with recent work of Foursov and Olver is made.

Some symmetry classifications of hyperbolic vector evolution equations

Motivated by recent work on integrable flows of curves and 1+1 dimensional sigma models, several O(N)-invariant classes of hyperbolic equations $u_{tx} =f(u,u_t,u_x)$ for an $N$-component vector $u(t,x)$ are considered. In each class we find all scaling-homogeneous equations admitting a higher symmetry of least possible scaling weight. Sigma model interpretations of these equations are presented.

Partial and complete linearization of PDEs based on conservation laws

A method based on infinite parameter conservation laws is described to factor linear differential operators out of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) or out of differential consequences of nonlinear PDEs. This includes a complete linearization to an equivalent linear PDE (-system) if that is possible. Infinite parameter conservation laws can be computed, for example, with the computer algebra package ConLaw.

Optimizing GoTools' Search Heuristics using Genetic Algorithms

GoTools is a program which solves life & death problems in the game of Go. This paper describes experiments using a Genetic Algorithm to optimize heuristic weights used by GoTools' tree-search. The complete set of heuristic weights is composed of different subgroups, each of which can be optimized with a suitable fitness function. As a useful side product, an MPI interface for FreePascal was implemented to allow the use of a parallelized fitness function running on a Beowulf cluster. The aim of this exercise is to optimize the current version of GoTools, and to make tools available in preparation of an extension of GoTools for solving open boundary life & death problems, which will introduce more heuristic parameters to be fine tuned.

A comparison of four approaches to the calculation of conservation laws

The paper compares computational aspects of four approaches to compute conservation laws of single differential equations (DEs) or systems of them, ODEs and PDEs. The only restriction, required by two of the four corresponding computer algebra programs, is that each DE has to be solvable for a leading derivative. Extra constraints for the conservation laws can be specified. Examples include new conservation laws that are non-polynomial in the functions, that have an explicit variable dependence and families of conservation laws involving arbitrary functions. The following equations are investigated in examples: Ito, Liouville, Burgers, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Karney-Sen-Chu-Verheest, Boussinesq, Tzetzeica, Benney.
