Maximal n-orthogonal modules for selfinjective algebras

Let A be a selfinjective algebra. We show that, for any n, maximal n-orthogonal A-modules (in the sense of Iyama), rarely exist. More precisely, we prove that if A admits a maximal n-orthogonal module, then all A-modules are of complexity at most 1.

Generalized Reynolds ideals for non-symmetric algebras

We show how to extend the theory of generalized Reynolds ideals, as introduced by B. K"ulshammer, from symmetric algebras to arbitrary finite-dimensional algebras (in positive characteristic). This provides new invariants of the derived module categories of finite-dimensional algebras, extending recent results by the third author for symmetric algebras.

q-Cartan matrices and combinatorial invariants of derived categories for skewed-gentle algebras

Cartan matrices are of fundamental importance in representation theory. For algebras defined by quivers (i.e. directed graphs) with relations the computation of the entries of the Cartan matrix amounts to counting nonzero paths in the quivers, leading naturally to a combinatorial setting. In this paper we study a refined version, so-called q-Cartan matrices, where each nonzero path is weighted by a power of an indeterminant q according to its length. Specializing q=1 gives the classical Cartan matrix. Our main motivation are derived module categories and their invariants: the invariant factors, and hence the determinant, of the Cartan matrix are preserved by derived equivalences. The paper deals with the important class of (skewed-) gentle algebras which occur naturally in representation theory, especially in the context of derived categories. These algebras are defined in purely combinatorial terms. We determine normal forms for the Cartan matrices of (skewed-) gentle algebras. In particular, we give explicit combinatorial formulae for the invariant factors and thus also for the determinant of the Cartan matrices of skewed-gentle algebras. As an application of our main results we show how one can use our formulae for the notoriously difficult problem of distinguishing derived equivalence classes.

Blocks with quaternion defect group over a 2-adic ring: the case \tilde{A}_4

Except for blocks with a cyclic or Klein four defect group, it is not known in general whether the Morita equivalence class of a block algebra over a field of prime characteristic determines that of the corresponding block algebra over a p-adic ring. We prove this to be the case when the defect group is quaternion of order 8 and the block algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 2 is Morita equivalent to $k\tilde A_4$. The main ingredients are Erdmann's classification of tame blocks and work of Cabanes and Picaronny on perfect isometries between tame blocks.

Weighted locally gentle quivers and Cartan matrices

We study the class of weighted locally gentle quivers. This naturally extends the class of gentle quivers and gentle algebras, which have been intensively studied in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, to a wider class of potentially infinite-dimensional algebras. Weights on the arrows of these quivers lead to gradings on the corresponding algebras. For the natural grading by path lengths, any locally gentle algebra is a Koszul algebra. Our main result is a general combinatorial formula for the determinant of the weighted Cartan matrix of a weighted locally gentle quiver. This determinant is invariant under graded derived equivalences of the corresponding algebras. We show that this weighted Cartan determinant is a rational function which is completely determined by the combinatorics of the quiver, more precisely by the number and the weight of certain oriented cycles. This leads to combinatorial invariants of the graded derived categories of graded locally gentle algebras.

Derived equivalence classification of symmetric algebras of domestic type

We give a complete derived equivalence classification of all symmetric algebras of domestic representation type over an algebraically closed field. This completes previous work by R. Bocian and the authors, where in this paper we solve the crucial problem of distinguishing standard and nonstandard algebras up to derived equivalence. Our main tool are generalized Reynolds ideals, introduced by B. K"ulshammer for symmetric algebras in positive characteristic, and recently shown by A. Zimmermann (math.RA/0509580) to be invariants under derived equivalences.

Derived equivalence classification of one-parametric selfinjective algebras

We give a complete description of the derived equivalence normal forms of all one-parametric selfinjective algebras over algebraically closed fields which admit simply connected Galois coverings. As a consequence, a description of the stable equivalence normal forms of these algebras is also obtained.

On the representation dimension of rank 2 group algebras and related algebras

The representation dimension was defined by M. Auslander in 1970 and is, due to spectacular recent progress, one of the most interesting homological invariants in representation theory. The precise value is not known in general, and is very hard to compute even for small examples. For group algebras, it is known in the case of cyclic Sylow subgroups, due to Auslander's fundamental work. For some group algebras (in characteristic 2) of rank at least 3 the precise value of the representation dimension follows from recent work of R.Rouquier. There is a gap for group algebras of rank 2; here the deep geometric methods do not work. In this paper we show that for all n and any field $k$ the commutative algebras k[x,y]/(x^2, y^{2+n}) have representation dimension 3. For the proof, we give an explicit inductive construction of a suitable generator-cogenerator. As a consequence, we obtain that the group algebras in characteristic 2 of the groups C_2 x C_{2^m} have representation dimension 3. Note that for m>2 these group algebras have wild representation type.

Radical embeddings and representation dimension

Given a representation-finite algebra B and a subalgebra A of B such that the Jacobson radicals of A and B coincide, we prove that the representation dimension of A is at most three. By a result of Igusa and Todorov, this implies that the finitistic dimension of A is finite.
