Birdtracks of Exotic SU(N) Color Structures

I introduce a systematic procedure for constructing complete and independent sets of interactions of fields transforming under exotic representations of SU(N), in particular the SU(3) gauge group of QCD. It uncovers errors in previous results, starting with interactions of four fields including a single sextet.

New developments on the WHIZARD event generator

We give a status report on new developments in the WHIZARD event generator, including NLO electroweak automation for $e^+e^-$ colliders, loop-induced processes, POWHEG matching, new features in the UFO interface and the current development for matching between exclusive photon radiation and fixed-order LO/NLO electroweak (EW) corrections. We report on several bug fixes relevant for certain aspects of the ILC250 Monte Carlo (MC) mass production, especially on the normalization of matching EPA samples with full-matrix element samples. Finally, we mention some ongoing work on efficiency improvements regarding parallelization of matrix elements and phase space sampling, as well as plans to revive the top threshold simulation.

Functional Directed Acyclical Graphs for Scattering Amplitudes in Perturbation Theory

I describe a mathematical framework for the efficient processing of the very large sets of Feynman diagrams contributing to the scattering of many particles. I reexpress the established numerical methods for the recursive construction of scattering elements as operations on compact abstract data types. This allows efficient perturbative computations in arbitrary models, as long as they can be described by an effective, not necessarily local, Lagrangian.

UFO 2.0 -- The Universal Feynman Output format

We present an update of the Universal FeynRules Output model format, commonly known as the UFO format, that is used by several automated matrix-element generators and high-energy physics software. We detail different features that have been proposed as extensions of the initial format during the last ten years, and collect them in the current second version of the model format that we coin the Universal Feynman Output format. Following the initial philosophy of the UFO, they consist of flexible and modular additions to address particle decays, custom propagators, form factors, the renormalisation group running of parameters and masses, and higher-order quantum corrections.

Monte Carlo event generators for high energy particle physics event simulation

Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also train the next generations of particle phenomenologists. The new challenges posed by possible future collider-based experiments and the fact that the first analyses at Run II of the LHC are now frequently limited by theory uncertainties urge the community to invest into further theoretical and technical improvements of these essential tools. In this short contribution to the European Strategy Update, we briefly review the state of the art, and the further developments that will be needed to meet the challenges of the next generation.

Effective Field Theory and Unitarity in Vector Boson Scattering

Weak vector boson scattering at high energies will be one of the key measurements in current and upcoming LHC runs. It is most sensitive to any new physics associated with electroweak symmetry breaking. However, a conventional EFT analysis will fail at high energies. To address this problem, we present a parameter-free prescription valid for arbitrary perturbative and non-perturbative models: the T-matrix unitarization. We describe its implementation as an asymptotically consistent reference model matched to the low-energy effective theory. We show examples of typical observables of vector-boson scattering at the LHC in our unitarized framework. For many strongly-coupled models like composite Higgs models, dimension-8 operators might be actually the leading operators. In addition to those longitudinal and transversal dimension eight EFT operators, the effects of generic tensor and scalar resonances within simplified models are considered.

Simple, Parallel, High-Performance Virtual Machines for Extreme Computations

We introduce a high-performance virtual machine (VM) written in a numerically fast language like Fortran or C to evaluate very large expressions. We discuss the general concept of how to perform computations in terms of a VM and present specifically a VM that is able to compute tree-level cross sections for any number of external legs, given the corresponding byte code from the optimal matrix element generator, O'Mega. Furthermore, this approach allows to formulate the parallel computation of a single phase space point in a simple and obvious way. We analyze hereby the scaling behaviour with multiple threads as well as the benefits and drawbacks that are introduced with this method. Our implementation of a VM can run faster than the corresponding native, compiled code for certain processes and compilers, especially for very high multiplicities, and has in general runtimes in the same order of magnitude. By avoiding the tedious compile and link steps, which may fail for source code files of gigabyte sizes, new processes or complex higher order corrections that are currently out of reach could be evaluated with a VM given enough computing power.

Anomalous top charged-current contact interactions in single top production at the LHC

In an effective theory approach, the full minimal set of leading contributions to anomalous charged-current top couplings comprises various new trilinear tbW as well as quartic tbff' interaction vertices, some of which are related to one another by equations of motion. While much effort in earlier work has gone into the extraction of the trilinear couplings from single top measurements, we argue in this article that these structures can be assessed independently by other observables, while single top production forms a unique window to the four-fermion sector. An effective theory approach is employed to infer and classify the minimal set of such couplings from dimension six operators in the minimal flavor violation scheme. In the phenomenological analysis, we present a Monte Carlo study at detector level to quantify the expected performance of the next LHC run to bound as well as distinguish the various contact couplings. Special attention is directed toward differential final state distributions including detector effects as a means to optimize the signal sensitivity as well as the discriminative power with respect to the possible coupling structures.

Anomalous Top Couplings at Hadron Colliders Revisited

In an effective operator approach, the full set of leading contributions to anomalous top couplings comprises various new trilinear as well as higher interaction vertices, some of which are related to one another by gauge symmetry or equations of motion. In order to study trilinear top couplings to SM gauge bosons such as ttA, ttZ, tbW and ttg, the operator set can be restricted accordingly. However, the complete basis cannot be mapped onto an on-shell parametrisation of the trilinear vertices alone. Four-fermion contact terms qqtt and udtb must be included if the relation to the operator basis is to be retained. In this paper, we point out how these interactions contribute to the single top search channels for anomalous trilinear tbW couplings at the LHC and Tevatron, thus affecting the corresponding bounds. All results are based on full leading-order partonic matrix elements, thus automatically accounting for off-shell and interference effects as well as irreducible backgrounds. A discussion of the quantitative effects of going from on-shell tops to full matrix elements including acceptance cuts is also provided.

Saturating the unitarity bound in AdS/CFT_(AdS)

We investigate the holographic description of CFTs defined on the cylinder and on AdS, which include an operator saturating the unitarity bound. The standard Klein-Gordon field with the corresponding mass and boundary conditions on global AdS_(d+1) and on an AdS_(d+1) geometry with AdS_d conformal boundary contains ghosts. We identify a limit in which the singleton field theory is obtained from the bulk theory with standard renormalized inner product, showing that a unitary bulk theory corresponding to an operator which saturates the unitarity bound can be formulated and that this yields a free field on the boundary. The normalizability issues found for the standard Klein-Gordon field on the geometry with AdS_d conformal boundary are avoided for the singleton theory, which offers interesting prospects for multi-layered AdS/CFT.

Discovery Prospects of an Almost Fermiophobic W' in the Three-Site Higgsless Model at the LHC

In extensions of the Standard Model with compactified extra dimensions, perturbative unitarity of the longitudinal gauge bosons is maintained through the contribution of heavy KK excitations of the gauge fields, without the necessity of introducing a Higgs field. The Three-Site Higgsless Model represents a minimal approach in this respect, containing just one extra set of heavy gauge bosons Z'/W' in the spectrum. While the Z' can have robust couplings to SM fermions and hence may be detected within the first 1-20 1/fb of LHC data at 14 TeV, the coupling of the W' to light fermions is suppressed and depends on the model parameters. Expanding on previous parton level studies, we determine discovery thresholds of the W' in s-channel Drell-Yan production at the LHC for W' masses of 380, 500 and 600 GeV, combining analyses of the semileptonic final states lljj, lnjj and the leptonic final state lnll including fast detector simulation.

WHIZARD: Simulating Multi-Particle Processes at LHC and ILC

We describe the universal Monte-Carlo event generator WHIZARD. The program automatically computes complete tree-level matrix elements, integrates them over phase space, evaluates distributions of observables, and generates unweighted event samples that can be used directly in detector simulation. There is no principal limit on the process complexity; using current hardware, the program has successfully been applied to hard scattering processes with up to eight particles in the final state. Matrix elements are computed as helicity amplitudes, so spin and color correlations are retained. The Standard Model, the MSSM, and many alternative models such as Little Higgs, anomalous couplings, or effects of extra dimensions or noncommutative SM extensions have been implemented. Using standard interfaces to PDF, beamstrahlung, parton shower and hadronization programs, WHIZARD generates complete physical events and covers physics at hadron, lepton, and photon colliders.

A tool box for implementing supersymmetric models

We present a framework for performing a comprehensive analysis of a large class of supersymmetric models, including spectrum calculation, dark matter studies and collider phenomenology. To this end, the respective model is defined in an easy and straightforward way using the \Mathematica package SARAH. SARAH then generates model files for CalcHep which can be used with MicrOmegas as well as model files for WHIZARD and OMEGA. In addition, Fortran source code for SPheno is created which facilitates the determination of the particle spectrum using two-loop renormalization group equations and one-loop corrections to the masses. As an additional feature, the generated SPheno code can write out input files suitable for use with HiggsBounds to apply bounds coming from the Higgs searches to the model. Combining all program provides a closed chain from model building to phenomenology.

The Boundary Multiplet of N=4 SU(2)xU(1) Gauged Supergravity on Asymptotically-AdS_5

We consider N=4 SU(2)xU(1) gauged supergravity on asymptotically-AdS_5 backgrounds. By a near-boundary analysis we determine the boundary-dominant components of the bulk fields from their partially gauge-fixed field equations. Subdominant components are projected out in the boundary limit and we find a reduced set of boundary fields, constituting the N=2 Weyl multiplet. The residual bulk symmetries are found to act on the boundary fields as four-dimensional diffeomorphisms, N=2 supersymmetry and (super-)Weyl transformations. This shows that the on-shell N=4 supergravity multiplet yields the N=2 Weyl multiplet on the boundary with the appropriate local N=2 superconformal transformations. Building on these results we use the AdS/CFT conjecture to calculate the Weyl anomaly of the dual four-dimensional superconformal field theories in a generic bosonic N=2 conformal supergravity background.

Algebraic approach to quantum field theory on a class of noncommutative curved spacetimes

In this article we study the quantization of a free real scalar field on a class of noncommutative manifolds, obtained via formal deformation quantization using triangular Drinfel'd twists. We construct deformed quadratic action functionals and compute the corresponding equation of motion operators. The Green's operators and the fundamental solution of the deformed equation of motion are obtained in terms of formal power series. It is shown that, using the deformed fundamental solution, we can define deformed *-algebras of field observables, which in general depend on the spacetime deformation parameter. This dependence is absent in the special case of Killing deformations, which include in particular the Moyal-Weyl deformation of the Minkowski spacetime.
