Classification of simple 0-dimensional isolated complete intersection singularities

The aim of this article is the classification of simple 0-dimensional isolated complete intersection singularities in positive characteristic. As usual, a singularity is called simple or 0-modal if there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of singularities into which the given singularity can deform. The notion of simpleness was introduced by V. I. Arnold and the classification of low modality singularities has become a fundamental task in singularity theory. Simple complex analytic isolated complete intersection singularities (ICIS) were classified by M. Giusti. However, the classification in positive characteristic requires different methods and is much more involved. The final result is nevertheless similar to the classification in characteristic 0 with some additional normal forms in low characteristic. The theoretical results in this paper mainly concern families of ICIS that are formal in the fiber and algebraic in the base (formal deformation theory is not sufficient). In particular, we give a definition of modality in this situation and prove its semicontinuity.

A note on finite determinacy of matrices

In this note, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix A in M to be finitely G-determined, where M is the ring of 2 x 2 matrices whose entries are formal power series over an infinite field, and G is a group acting on M by change of coordinates together with multiplication by invertible matrices from both sides.

Finite determinacy of matrices and ideals

The main aim of this paper is to characterize ideals I in the power series ring R=K[[x1,...,xs]] that are finitely determined up to contact equivalence by proving that this is the case if and only if I is an isolated complete intersection singularity, provided dim(R/I) > 0 and K is an infinite field (of arbitrary characteristic). Here two ideals I and J are contact equivalent if the local K-algebras R/I and R/J are isomorphic. If I is minimally generated by a1,...,am, we call I finitely contact determined if it is contact equivalent to any ideal J that can be generated by b1,...,bm with ai - bi in ^k for some integer k. We give also computable and semicontinuous determinacy bounds. The above result is proved by considering left-right equivalence on the ring M of m x n matrices A with entries in R and we show that the Fitting ideals of a finitely determined matrix in M have maximal height, a result of independent interest. The case of ideals is treated by considering 1-column matrices. Fitting ideals together with a special construction are used to prove the characterization of finite determinacy for ideals in R. Some results of this paper are known in characteristic 0, but they need new (and more sophisticated) arguments in positive characteristic partly because the tangent space to the orbit of the left-right group cannot be described in the classical way. In addition we point out several other oddities, including the concept of specialization for power series, where the classical approach (due to Krull) does not work anymore. We include some open problems and a conjecture.

Algorithms for group actions in arbitrary characteristic and a problem in singularity theory

We consider the actions of different groups G on the space M of m x n matrices with entries in the formal power series ring K[[x1,..., xs]], K an arbitrary field. G acts on M by analytic change of coordinates, combined with the multiplication by invertible matrices from the left, the right or from both sides, respectively. This includes right and contact equivalence of functions and mappings, resp. ideals. A is called finitely G-determined if any matrix B, with entries of A-B in ^k for some k, is contained in the G-orbit of A. The purpose of this paper is to present algorithms for checking finite determinacy, to compute determinacy bounds and to compute the image of the tangent map to the orbit map G -> GA, which we call the tangent image to the orbit GA. The tangent image is contained in the tangent space to the orbit GA and we apply the algorithms to prove that both spaces may be different if the field K has positive characteristic, even for contact equivalence of functions. This fact had been overlooked by several authors before. Besides this application, the algorithms of this paper may be of interest for the classification of singularities in arbitrary characteristic.

On finite determinacy for matrices of power series

Let $R=K[[x_1,...,x_s]]$ be the ring of formal power series with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic. On the ring $M_{m,n}$ of $m\times n$ matrices $A$ with entries in $R$ we consider several equivalence relations given by the action on $M_{m,n}$ of a group $G$. $G$ can be the group of automorphisms of $R$, combined with the multiplication of invertible matrices from the left, from the right, or from both sides, respectively. We call $A$ finitely $G$-determined if $A$ is $G$-equivalent to any matrix $B$ with ${A-B} \in {\mathfrak{m}^k M_{m,n}}$ for some finite integer $k$, which implies in particular that $A$ is $G$--equivalent to a matrix with polynomial entries. The classical criterion for analytic or differential map germs $f:(K^s,0) \to (K^m,0)$, $K = \mathbb{R}, \mathbb{C}$, says that $f \in M_{m,1}$ is finitely determined (with respect to various group actions) iff the tangent space to the orbit of $f$ has finite codimension in $M_{m,1}$. We extend this criterion to arbitrary matrices in $M_{m,n}$ if the characteristic of K is 0 or, more general, if the orbit map is separable. In positive characteristic however, the problem is more subtle since the orbit map is in general not separable, as we show by an example. This fact had been overlooked in previous papers. Our main result is a general sufficient criterion for finite $G$-determinacy in $M_{m,n}$ in arbitrary characteristic in terms of the tangent image of the orbit map, which we introduce in this paper. This criterion provides a computable bound for the $G$-determinacy of a matrix $A$ in $M_{m,n}$, which is new even in characteristic 0.

Mather-Yau Theorem in Positive Characteristic

The well-known Mather-Yau theorem says that the isomorphism type of the local ring of an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is determined by its Tjurina algebra. It is also well known that this result is wrong as stated for power series f in K[[x]] over fields K of positive characteristic. In this note we show that, however, also in positive characteristic the isomorphism type of an isolated hypersurface singularity f is determined by an Artinian algebra, namely by a "higher Tjurina algebra" for sufficiently high index, for which we give an effective bound. We prove also a similar version for the "higher Milnor algebra" considered as K[[f]]-algebra.
