Generic bifurcation of certain piecewise smooth vector fields

This paper presents results concerning bifurcations of 2D piecewise-smooth dynamical systems governed by vector fields. Generic three-parameter families of a class of Non-Smooth Vector Fields are studied and the bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main results describe the unfolding of the so called Resonant $Fold-Saddle$ singularity.

Sliding Shilnikov Connection in Filippov-type Predator-Prey Model

Recently, a piecewise smooth differential system was derived as a model of a 1 predator-2 prey interaction where the predator feeds adaptively on its preferred prey and an alternative prey. In such a model, strong evidence of chaotic behavior was numerically found. Here, we revisit this model and prove the existence of a Shilnikov sliding connection when the parameters are taken in a codimension one submanifold of the parameter space. As a consequence of this connection, we conclude, analytically, that the model behaves chaotically for an open region of the parameter space.

A mathematical model for chemoimmunotherapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Immunotherapy is currently regarded as the most promising treatment to fight against cancer. This is particularly true in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, an indolent neoplastic disease of B-lymphocytes which eventually causes the immune system's failure. In this and other areas of cancer research, mathematical modeling is pointed out as a prominent tool to analyze theoretical and practical issues. Its lack in studies of chemoimmunotherapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is what motivates us to come up with a simple ordinary differential equation model. It is based on ideas of de Pillis & Radunskaya and on standard pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics assumptions. In order to check the positivity of the state variables, we first establish an invariant region where these time-dependent variables remain positive. Afterwards, the action of the immune system, as well as the chemoimmunotherapeutic role in promoting cancer cure are investigated by means of numerical simulations and the classical linear stability analysis. The role of adoptive cellular immunotherapy is also addressed. Our overall conclusion is that chemoimmunotherapeutic protocols can be effective in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia provided that chemotherapy is not a limiting factor to the immunotherapy efficacy.

Attractivity, degeneracy and codimension of a typical singularity in 3D piecewise smooth vector fields

We address the problem of understanding the dynamics around typical singular points of $3D$ piecewise smooth vector fields. A model $Z_0$ in $3D$ presenting a T-singularity is considered and a complete picture of its dynamics is obtained in the following way: \textit{(i)} $Z_0$ has an invariant plane $π_0$ filled up with periodic orbits (this means that the restriction $Z_0 |_{π_0}$ is a center around the singularity), \textit{(ii)} All trajectories of $Z_0$ converge to the surface $π_0$, and such attraction occurs in a very non-usual and amazing way, \textit{(iii)} given an arbitrary integer $k\geq 0$ then $Z_0$ can be approximated by $π_0$-invariant piecewise smooth vector fields $Z_{\varepsilon}$ such that the restriction $Z_{\varepsilon} |_{π_0}$ has exactly $k$-hyperbolic limit cycles, \textit{(iv)} the origin can be chosen as an asymptotic stable equilibrium of $Z_{\varepsilon}$ when $k=0$, and finally, \textit{(v)} $Z_0$ has infinite codimension in the set of all $3D$ piecewise smooth vector fields.

Chaotic Planar Piecewise Smooth Vector Fields With Non Trivial Minimal Sets

In this paper some aspects on chaotic behavior and minimality in planar piecewise smooth vector fields theory are treated. The occurrence of non-deterministic chaos is observed and the concept of orientable minimality is introduced. It is also investigated some relations between minimality and orientable minimality and observed the existence of new kinds of non-trivial minimal sets in chaotic systems. The approach is geometrical and involve the ordinary techniques of non-smooth systems.

On Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem and Non-Trivial Minimal Sets in Planar Nonsmooth Vector Fields

In this paper some qualitative and geometric aspects of nonsmooth vector fields theory are discussed. In the class of nonsmooth systems, that do not present sliding regions, a Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem is presented. A minimal set in planar Filippov systems not predicted in classical Poincaré-Bendixson theory and whose interior is non-empty is exhibited. The concepts of limit sets, recurrence and minimal sets for nonsmooth systems are defined and compared with the classical ones. Moreover some differences between them are pointed out.

Bifurcations of Non Smooth Vector Fields on $\R^2$ by Geometric Singular Perturbations

Our object of study is non smooth vector fields on $\R^2$. We apply the techniques of geometric singular perturbations in non smooth vector fields after regularization and a blow$-$up. In this way we are able to bring out some results that bridge the space between non$-$smooth dynamical systems presenting typical singularities and singularly perturbed smooth systems.

Canard Cycles and Poincaré Index of Non-Smooth Vector Fields on the Plane

This paper is concerned with closed orbits of non-smooth vector fields on the plane. For a subclass of non-smooth vector fields we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of canard kind solutions. By means of a regularization we prove that the canard cycles are singular orbits of singular perturbation problems which are limit periodic sets of a sequence of limit cycles. Moreover, we generalize the Poincaré Index for non-smooth vector fields.
