Vapor-Cell-Induced Uncertainty in Rydberg Atom Measurements via the Electric-Field Volume-Integral-Equation Method

Electromagnetic scattering effects of a vapor cell on electric-field measurements using Rydberg atom-based sensors are analyzed with the aid of the volume integral equation method. In a manner similar to measurement, this computational approach determines the electric field over grid points within the vapor cell. Its relatively high computational efficiency makes it suitable for use in optimization routines and statistical uncertainty studies. We apply this method to compare uncertainty contributions arising due to the presence of the vapor cell, such as uncertainty in the glass relative permittivity or standing wave formation inside the cell, to those arising from the atomic spectroscopic measurement, such as uncertainty in the atomic dipole moment. For vapor cell dimensions less than half a wavelength, the dominant uncertainty source arises from uncertainty in the glass relative permittivity, resulting in a total uncertainty of $\sim$3.5\% -- comparable to the best uncertainties obtained with traditional field generation methods at national metrology institutes. Precise permittivity measurements have the potential to further reduce measurement uncertainty to $<1$\%.

Recent Activities of a European Union Joint Research Project on Metrology for Emerging Wireless Standards

Emerging wireless technologies with Gbps connectivity, such as the 5th generation (5G) and 6th generation (6G) of mobile networks, require improved and substantiating documentation for the wireless standards concerning the radio signals, systems, transmission environments used, and the radio frequency exposures created. Current challenges faced by the telecommunications sector include the lack of accurate, fast, low-cost, and traceable methods for manufacturers to demonstrate 5G and 6G product verifications matching customer specifications. This paper gives an update on the recent research and development activities from an EU Joint Research Project entitled metrology for emerging wireless standards (MEWS) in support of the above.

A Realisation of Channel Emulation in a Reverberation Chamber method for Over-the-Air Compliance Testing in Support of 3GPP Standardisation

The inherent long decay power delay profile (PDP) in the reverberation chamber (RC) is a major challenge for accurate channel emulation of 3GPP channel model, which is widely used in performance test of the physical layer. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a novel two-step "closed-loop" approach consisting of (i) a channel measuring step and (ii) a channel model synthesis step. The channel measurement step is used to capture the wireless channel of the RC. In the channel model synthesis step, an additional IQ signal convolution process is introduced prior the IQ signal passes through the channel emulator (CE). This process filters the IQ signal by an equalizer filter derived from the measured channel impulse response (CIR) of the RC obtained in channel measurement step. From the measurement results, the proposed approach is proven that able to effectively emulate typical 3GPP 5G channel model.

An Alternative Method to Identify the Susceptibility Threshold Level of Device under Test in a Reverberation Chamber

By counting the number of pass/fail occurrences of a DUT (Device under Test) in the stirring process in a reverberation chamber (RC), the threshold electric field (E-field) level can be well estimated without tuning the input power and repeating the whole testing many times. The Monte-Carlo method is used to verify the results. Estimated values and uncertainties are given for Rayleigh distributed fields and for Rice distributed fields with different K-factors.

A Study of Experiment-based Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure Evidence on Stochastic Nature of A Massive MIMO System

In this paper, a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) testbed that is capable of mimicking realistic 5G new radio (NR) base station (BS) beamforming performance has been utilised to gather experimental-based evidence of 5G BS RF-EMF exposure within a real-world indoor environment. The mMIMO testbed has up to 128 RF channels with user-programmable software defined radio (SDR) capability. The stochastic nature of the 5G NR mMIMO system has been statistically assessed by evaluating the spatial variation of the RF-EMF exposure surrounding the mMIMO testbed when taking into account different beam profiles and data rates. Several other factors that influence the RF-EMF of mMIMO system have also being considered.

An Assessment of the Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure from A Massive MIMO 5G Testbed

Current radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure limits have become a critical concern for fifth-generation (5G) mobile network deployment. Regulation is not harmonized and in certain countries and regions it goes beyond the guidelines set out by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Using a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) testbed with beamforming capabilities that is capable of mimicking realistic 5G base station (BS) performance, this paper presents an experimental and statistical assessment of its associated RF-EMF exposure within a real-world indoor environment. The mMIMO testbed has up to 128 channels with user-programmable software defined radio (SDR) capability. It could perform zero-forcing precoding after channel state information (CSI) acquisition for different beamforming scenarios with respect to the associated user terminal antenna setups and positions. With 64 active mMIMO transmit antennas, 8 beamforming scenarios have been considered for single-user (SU) and multi-user (MU) downlink communications at different locations. Using a calibrated triaxial isotropic field-probe, the received channel power heat map for each beamforming scenario was acquired and then converted into an RF-EMF heat map. The relevant RF-EMF statistics was evaluated based on the variations of beam profiles and number of users.

Understanding the Temporal Fading in Wireless Industrial Networks: Measurements and Analyses

The wide deployment of wireless industrial networks still faces the challenge of unreliable service due to severe multipath fading in industrial environments. Such fading effects are not only caused by the massive metal surfaces existing within the industrial environment but also, more significantly, the moving objects including operators and logistical vehicles. As a result, the mature analytical framework of mobile fading channel may not be appropriate for the wireless industrial networks especially the majority fixed wireless links. In this paper, we propose a qualitative analysis framework to characterize the temporal fading effects of the fixed wireless links in industrial environments, which reveals the essential reason of correlated temporal variation of both the specular and scattered power. Extensive measurements with both the envelop distribution and impulse response from field experiments validate the proposed qualitative framework, which will be applicable to simulate the industrial multipath fading characteristics and to derive accurate link quality metrics to support reliable wireless network service in various industrial applications.

Prediction of SINR using BER and EVM for Massive MIMO Applications

Future communication systems employing massive multiple input multiple output will not have the ability to use channel state information at the mobile user terminals. Instead, it will be necessary for such devices to evaluate the downlink signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) with interference both from the base station serving other users within the same cell and other base stations from adjacent cells. The SINR will act as an indicator of how well the precoders have been applied at the base station. The results presented in this paper from a 32 x 3 massive MIMO channel sounder measurement campaign at 2.4 GHz show how the received bit error rate and error vector magnitudes can be used to obtain a prediction of both the average and dynamically changing SINR.

Efficient Uncertainty Evaluation of Vector Network Analyser Measurements Using Two-Tier Bayesian Analysis and Monte Carlo Method

Antennas are a key element in any communication system and vector network analyser (VNA) is popular tool for charactering antenna impedance bandwidth. In this paper, an efficient uncertainty evaluation method is proposed for VNA measurement based on its uncertainty propagation mechanism using Bayesian analysis and Monte Carlo method. The proposed method is generic and can be applied to VNA with arbitrary number of ports. In order to obtain the complete information of measurement uncertainty distribution, a two-tier Bayesian analytic process is carried out. The proposed method contains three steps. In the first step, the posterior distribution of each uncertainty source of VNA calibrations is deduced by the use of prior and current sample information through the first-tier Bayesian analysis. In the second step, the obtained posterior distributions of uncertainty sources are taken into the Monte Carlo simulation of one-port VNA measurement uncertainties. In the last step, the results obtained in the second step are used as the prior distribution of the secondary Bayesian evaluation, then the evaluation results of the measurement uncertainty can be obtained with the means, variances and skewness of the probabilistic distribution. The numerical analysis using an antenna measurement results demonstrate the high-efficiency and reliability of this proposed method.

This paper introduces a microstrip square patch antenna with a novel low-cost and efficient feeding mechanism for millimetre-wave frequencies targeting at 28 GHz. The radiating patch is excited by the technique of empty substrate integrated waveguide, and two different slot configurations have been examined in this regard. It has been observed that the antenna gain profile and radiation efficiency is significantly improved in both configurations as compared to the microstrip square patch antenna provided with conventional feeding.

A Millimeter Wave MIMO Testbed for 5G Communications

This paper presents a 2 x 2 millimeter wave (mm-wave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) testbed that operates at around 30 GHz. The link assessment of the system operating at 26.25 GHz was carried out on a test bench, with a short communication distance between the transmitting and receiving antennas. A user-programmable, reconfigurable and real-time signal processing field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs)-based software defined radio (SDR) system was employed as part of the testbed to validate the system-level performance for a downlink time division long-term evolution (TD-LTE) duplex scheme. Constellation diagram for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) digital modulation were acquired while the testbed was operating at 30 GHz. The testbed could be employed for the development of signal test, communication algorithm and measurement metrology for 5G communications.
