DiffCoord: Differentiable Coordination for Distributed Multi-Agent Trajectory Optimization

Integrating the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) with Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP) provides a scalable framework for distributed multi-agent trajectory optimization. In practice, ADMM is typically truncated for computational efficiency, tightly coupling parameters that would otherwise separately govern coordination quality and task performance. In this paper, we propose Differentiable Coordination (DiffCoord), a unified framework that jointly meta-learns these coupled parameters for the truncated ADMM-DDP pipeline. These parameters are generated by agent-wise neural networks for task adaptation, and the same networks are shared among isomorphic agents to enable scalability to varying agent counts. We achieve efficient meta-learning by differentiating the ADMM-DDP pipeline end-to-end. Notably, this yields an auxiliary ADMM-LQR distributed gradient solver that computes and coordinates meta-gradients with respect to these parameters. This solver inherits the computational structure of the pipeline, enabling reuse of key computation results and efficient parallelization over agents and along trajectory horizons. We validate DiffCoord through numerical and physical experiments on a cooperative aerial transport system, where it reconfigures quadrotor formations for safe 6-DoF load manipulation in tight spaces. It adapts robustly to varying team sizes and load dynamics, while reducing per-agent gradient computation time by up to 70% compared with state-of-the-art trajectory-gradient methods.

Learning Agile Gate Traversal via Analytical Optimal Policy Gradient

Traversing narrow gates presents a significant challenge and has become a standard benchmark for evaluating agile and precise quadrotor flight. Traditional modularized autonomous flight stacks require extensive design and parameter tuning, while end-to-end reinforcement learning (RL) methods often suffer from low sample efficiency, limited interpretability, and degraded disturbance rejection under unseen perturbations. In this work, we present a novel hybrid framework that adaptively fine-tunes model predictive control (MPC) parameters online using outputs from a neural network (NN) trained offline. The NN jointly predicts a reference pose and cost function weights, conditioned on the coordinates of the gate corners and the current drone state. To achieve efficient training, we derive analytical policy gradients not only for the MPC module but also for an optimization-based gate traversal detection module. Hardware experiments demonstrate agile and accurate gate traversal with peak accelerations of $30\ \mathrm{m/s^2}$, as well as recovery within $0.85\ \mathrm{s}$ following body-rate disturbances exceeding $1146\ \mathrm{deg/s}$.

Validating the Effectiveness of a Large Language Model-based Approach for Identifying Children's Development across Various Free Play Settings in Kindergarten

Free play is a fundamental aspect of early childhood education, supporting children's cognitive, social, emotional, and motor development. However, assessing children's development during free play poses significant challenges due to the unstructured and spontaneous nature of the activity. Traditional assessment methods often rely on direct observations by teachers, parents, or researchers, which may fail to capture comprehensive insights from free play and provide timely feedback to educators. This study proposes an innovative approach combining Large Language Models (LLMs) with learning analytics to analyze children's self-narratives of their play experiences. The LLM identifies developmental abilities, while performance scores across different play settings are calculated using learning analytics techniques. We collected 2,224 play narratives from 29 children in a kindergarten, covering four distinct play areas over one semester. According to the evaluation results from eight professionals, the LLM-based approach achieved high accuracy in identifying cognitive, motor, and social abilities, with accuracy exceeding 90% in most domains. Moreover, significant differences in developmental outcomes were observed across play settings, highlighting each area's unique contributions to specific abilities. These findings confirm that the proposed approach is effective in identifying children's development across various free play settings. This study demonstrates the potential of integrating LLMs and learning analytics to provide child-centered insights into developmental trajectories, offering educators valuable data to support personalized learning and enhance early childhood education practices.

Responsivity evaluation of photonics integrated photodetectors via pairwise measurements with an attenuation circuit

Integrated photonics platforms offer a compact and scalable solution for developing next-generation optical technologies. For precision applications involving weak signals, the responsivity as well as the accurate calibration of the integrated photodetectors at low optical powers become increasingly important. It remains challenging to perform a calibration traceable to mW-level primary standards without relying on external attenuation setups. Here, we utilize an on-chip attenuation circuit, composed of a series of cascaded directional couplers (DCs), to evaluate the responsivity of integrated photodetectors (PDs) at uW optical power levels with mW inputs to the chip. Moreover, we show that a pairwise measurement method, involving the simultaneous measurement of the integrated PD photocurrent and an auxiliary optical output which is coupled off-chip, systematically improves the experimental uncertainties compared to a direct PD photocurrent measurement. For 3 cascaded DCs, the pairwise measurement improves the repeatability error from 1.21% to 0.22%, with an overall expanded calibration uncertainty (k=2) of 10.13%. The latter is dominated by the scattering noise floor and fiber-to-chip coupling errors, which can be significantly improved with better device fabrication control. Our method can be extended to a fully integrated calibration solution for waveguide-integrated single-photon detectors.

DriveSceneGen: Generating Diverse and Realistic Driving Scenarios from Scratch

Realistic and diverse traffic scenarios in large quantities are crucial for the development and validation of autonomous driving systems. However, owing to numerous difficulties in the data collection process and the reliance on intensive annotations, real-world datasets lack sufficient quantity and diversity to support the increasing demand for data. This work introduces DriveSceneGen, a data-driven driving scenario generation method that learns from the real-world driving dataset and generates entire dynamic driving scenarios from scratch. DriveSceneGen is able to generate novel driving scenarios that align with real-world data distributions with high fidelity and diversity. Experimental results on 5k generated scenarios highlight the generation quality, diversity, and scalability compared to real-world datasets. To the best of our knowledge, DriveSceneGen is the first method that generates novel driving scenarios involving both static map elements and dynamic traffic participants from scratch.

Remote Co-teaching in Rural Classroom: Current Practices, Impacts, and Challenges

The shortage of high-quality teachers is one of the biggest educational problems faced by underdeveloped areas. With the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs), China has begun a remote co-teaching intervention program using ICTs for rural classes, forming a unique co-teaching classroom. We conducted semi-structured interviews with nine remote urban teachers and twelve local rural teachers. We identified the remote co-teaching classes standard practices and co-teachers collaborative work process. We also found that remote teachers high-quality class directly impacted local teachers and students. Furthermore, interestingly, local teachers were also actively involved in making indirect impacts on their students by deeply coordinating with remote teachers and adapting the resources offered by the remote teachers. We conclude by summarizing and discussing the challenges faced by teachers, lessons learned from the current program, and related design implications to achieve a more adaptive and sustainable ICT4D program design.

Exploring the Design Space of Immersive Urban Analytics

Recent years have witnessed the rapid development and wide adoption of immersive head-mounted devices, such as HTC VIVE, Oculus Rift, and Microsoft HoloLens. These immersive devices have the potential to significantly extend the methodology of urban visual analytics by providing critical 3D context information and creating a sense of presence. In this paper, we propose an theoretical model to characterize the visualizations in immersive urban analytics. Further more, based on our comprehensive and concise model, we contribute a typology of combination methods of 2D and 3D visualizations that distinguish between linked views, embedded views, and mixed views. We also propose a supporting guideline to assist users in selecting a proper view under certain circumstances by considering visual geometry and spatial distribution of the 2D and 3D visualizations. Finally, based on existing works, possible future research opportunities are explored and discussed.
