Higgs Boson Mass From Orbifold GUTs

We consider a class of seven-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric orbifold GUTs in which the Standard Model (SM) gauge couplings and one of the Yukawa couplings (top quark, bottom quark or tau lepton) are unified, without low energy supersymmetry, at M_{GUT} \simeq 4 \times 10^{16} GeV. With gauge-top quark Yukawa coupling unification the SM Higgs boson mass is estimated to be 135 \pm 6 GeV, which increases to 144 \pm 4 GeV for gauge-bottom quark (or gauge-tau lepton) Yukawa coupling unification.

Type IIA Pati-Salam Flux Vacua

We show that for supersymmetric AdS vacua on Type IIA orientifolds with flux compactifications, the RR tadpole cancellation conditions can be completely relaxed, and then the four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry conditions are the main constraints on consistent intersecting D6-brane model building. We construct two kinds of three-family Pati-Salam models. In the first kind of models, the suitable three-family SM fermion masses and mixings can be generated at the stringy tree level, and then the rank one problem for the SM fermion Yukawa matrices can be solved. In the second kind of models, only the third family of the SM fermions can obtain masses at tree level. In these models, the complex structure parameters can be determined by supersymmetric D6-brane configurations, and all the moduli may be stabilized. The initial gauge symmetries U(4)_C \times U(2)_L \times U(2)_R and U(4)_C \times USp(2)_L \times U(2)_R can be broken down to the SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L} \times U(1)_{I_{3R}} due to the Green-Schwarz mechanism and D6-brane splittings, and further down to the SM gauge symmetry around the string scale via the supersymmetry preserving Higgs mechanism. Comparing to the previous model building, we have less bidoublet Higgs fields. However, there generically exist some exotic particles.

Standard-Like Model Building on Type II Orientifolds

We construct new Standard-like models on Type II orientifolds. In Type IIA theory on $\mathbf{T^6/(\Z_2\times \Z_2)}$ orientifold with intersecting D6-branes, we first construct a three-family trinification model where the $U(3)_C\times U(3)_L\times U(3)_R$ gauge symmetry can be broken down to the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_{Y_L}\times U(1)_{I_{3R}}\times U(1)_{Y_R}$ gauge symmetry by the Green-Schwarz mechanism and D6-brane splittings, and further down to the SM gauge symmetry at the TeV scale by Higgs mechanism. We also construct a Pati-Salam model where we may explain three-family SM fermion masses and mixings. Furthermore, we construct for the first time a Pati-Salam like model with $U(4)_C \times U(2)_L \times U(1)' \times U(1)''$ gauge symmetry where the $U(1)_{I_{3R}}$ comes from a linear combination of U(1) gauge symmetries. In Type IIB theory on $\mathbf{T^6/(\Z_2\times \Z_2)}$ orientifold with flux compactifications, we construct a new flux model with $U(4)_C \times U(2)_L \times U(2)_R$ gauge symmetry where the magnetized D9-branes with large negative D3-brane charges are introduced in the hidden sector. However, we can not construct the trinification model with supergravity fluxes because the three SU(3) groups already contribute very large RR charges. The phenomenological consequences of these models are briefly discussed as well.

Orbifold Unification for the Gauge and Higgs Fields and Their Couplings

We present an orbifold GUT model in which the NMSSM Higgs trilinear couplings are unified with the three Standard Model gauge couplings. The model is constructed as an N=2 supersymmetric SU(8) gauge theory in six dimensions, which is reduced to the NMSSM with extra U(1) factors upon compactification. Such an unification is in good agreement with experiments. The predicted upper limit for the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs boson is somewhat larger than in the MSSM, and can be tested in the upcoming Large Hadron Collider.

Hidden Gauge Symmetries: A New Possibility at the Colliders

We consider a new physics possibility at the colliders: the observation of TeV scale massive vector bosons in the non-adjoint representations under the Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry. To have a unitary and renormalizable theory, we propose a class of models with gauge symmetry $\prod_i G_i \times SU(3)'_C \times SU(2)'_L \times U(1)'_Y$ where the SM fermions and Higgs fields are singlets under the hidden gauge symmetry $\prod_i G_i$, and such massive vector bosons appear after the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken down to the SM gauge symmetry. We discuss the model with SU(5) hidden gauge symmetry in detail, and comment on the generic phenomenological implications.

Light Sterile Neutrinos in the Supersymmetric U(1)' Models and Axion Models

We propose the minimal supersymmetric sterile neutrino model (MSSNM) where the sterile neutrino masses are about 1 eV, while the active neutrino masses and the mixings among the active and sterile neutrinos are generated during late time phase transition. All the current experimental neutrino data include the LSND can be explained simultaneously, and the constraints on the sterile neutrinos from the big bang nucleosynthesis and large scale structure can be evaded. To realize the MSSNM naturally, we consider the supersymmetric intermediate-scale U(1)' model, the low energy U(1)' model with a secluded U(1)'-breaking sector, and the DFSZ and KSVZ axion models. In these models, the $μ$ problem can be solved elegantly, and the 1 eV sterile neutrino masses can be generated via high-dimensional operators. For the low energy U(1)' model with a secluded U(1)'-breaking sector, we also present a scenario in which the masses and mixings for the active and sterile neutrinos are all generated during late time phase transition.

Non-Canonical Gauge Coupling Unification in High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

The string landscape suggests that the supersymmetry breaking scale can be high, and then the simplest low energy effective theory is the Standard Model (SM). Considering grand unification scale supersymmetry breaking, we show that gauge coupling unification can be achieved at about 10^{16-17} GeV in the SM with suitable normalizations of the U(1)_Y, and we predict that the Higgs mass range is 127 GeV to 165 GeV, with the precise value strongly correlated with the top quark mass m_t and SU(3)_C gauge coupling. For example, if m_t=178\pm1 GeV, the Higgs boson mass is predicted to be between 141 GeV and 154 GeV. We also point out that gauge coupling unification in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) does not imply the canonical U(1)_Y normalization. In addition, we present 7-dimensional orbifold grand unified theories (GUTs) in which such normalizations for the U(1)_Y and charge quantization can be realized. The supersymmetry can be broken at the grand unification scale by the Scherk--Schwarz mechanism. We briefly comment on a non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization due to the brane localized gauge kinetic terms in orbifold GUTs.

Coupling Unifications in Gauge-Higgs Unified Orbifold Models

Supersymmetric gauge theories, in higher dimensions compactified in an orbifold, give a natural framework to unify the gauge bosons, Higgs fields and even the matter fields in a single multiplet of the unifying gauge symmetry. The extra dimensions and the supersymmetry are the two key ingredients for such an unification. In this work, we investigate various scenarios for the unification of the three gauge couplings, and the Yukawa couplings in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), as well as the trilinear Higgs couplings λand κof the Non-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). We present an SU(8) model in six dimensions with N=2 supersymmetry, compactified in a T^2/Z_6 orbifold which unifies the three gauge couplings with λand κof NMSSM. Then, we present an SU(9) model in 6D, which, in addition, includes partial unification of Yukawa couplings, either for the up-type (top quark and Dirac tau-neutrino) or down-type (bottom quark and tau lepton). We also study the phenomenological implications of these various unification scenarios using the appropriate renormalization group equations, and show that such unification works very well with the measured low energy values of the couplings. The predicted upper bounds for the lightest neutral Higgs boson mass in our model is higher than those in MSSM, but lower that those in the general NMSSM (where the couplings λand κare arbitrary). Some of the predictions of our models can be tested in the upcoming Large Hadron Collider.

Neutrino Masses in Supersymmetric SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)' Models

We consider various possibilities for generating neutrino masses in supersymmetric models with an additional U(1)' gauge symmetry. One class of models involves two extra U(1)' x U(1)'' gauge symmetries, with U(1)'' breaking at an intermediate scale and yielding small Dirac masses through high-dimensional operators. The right-handed neutrinos N^c_i can naturally decouple from the low energy U(1)', avoiding cosmological constraints. A variant version can generate large Majorana masses for N^c_i and an ordinary see-saw. We secondly consider models with a pair of heavy triplets which couple to left-handed neutrinos. After integrating out the heavy triplets, a small neutrino Majorana mass matrix can be generated by the induced non-renormalizable terms. We also study models involving the double-see-saw mechanism, in which heavy Majorana masses for N^c_i are associated with the TeV-scale of U(1)' breaking. We give the conditions to avoid runaway directions in such models and discuss simple patterns for neutrino masses.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in a Supersymmetric U(1)' Model

We construct an anomaly free supersymmetric U(1)' model with a secluded U(1)'-breaking sector. We study the one-loop effective potential at finite temperature, and show that there exists a strong enough first order electroweak phase transition for electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) because of the large trilinear term $A_h h S H_d H_u$ in the tree-level Higgs potential. Unlike in the MSSM, the lightest stop can be very heavy. We consider the non-local EWBG mechanism in the thin wall regime, and find that within uncertainties the observed baryon number can be generated from the $τ$ lepton contribution, with the secluded sector playing an essential role. The chargino and neutralino contributions and the implications for the Z' mass and electric dipole moments are briefly discussed.

The New Minimal Standard Model

We construct the New Minimal Standard Model that incorporates the new discoveries of physics beyond the Minimal Standard Model (MSM): Dark Energy, non-baryonic Dark Matter, neutrino masses, as well as baryon asymmetry and cosmic inflation, adopting the principle of minimal particle content and the most general renormalizable Lagrangian. We base the model purely on empirical facts rather than aesthetics. We need only six new degrees of freedom beyond the MSM. It is free from excessive flavor-changing effects, CP violation, too-rapid proton decay, problems with electroweak precision data, and unwanted cosmological relics. Any model of physics beyond the MSM should be measured against the phenomenological success of this model.

Standard-like Models as Type IIB Flux Vacua

We construct new semi-realistic Type IIB flux vacua on $Z_2\times Z_2$ orientifolds with three- and four- Standard Model (SM) families and up to three units of quantized flux. The open-string sector is comprised of magnetized D-branes and is T-dual to supersymmetric intersecting D6-brane constructions. The SM sector contains magnetized D9-branes with negative D3-brane charge contribution. There are large classes of such models and we present explicit constructions for representative ones. In addition to models with one and two units of quantized flux, we also construct the first three- and four-family Standard-like models with supersymmetric fluxes, i.e. comprising three units of quantized flux. Supergravity fluxes are due to the self-dual NS-NS and R-R three-form field strength and they fix the toroidal complex structure moduli and the dilaton. The supersymmetry conditions for the D-brane sector fix in some models all three toroidal Kähler moduli. We also provide examples where toroidal K\" ahler moduli are fixed by strong gauge dynamics on the ``hidden sector'' D7-brane. Most of the models possess Higgs doublet pairs with Yukawa couplings that can generate masses for quarks and leptons. The models have (mainly right-) chiral exotics.

Axion Models with High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

Inspired by the possibility of high-scale supersymmetry breaking in the string landscape where the cosmological constant problem and the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved while the strong CP problem is still a challenge for naturalness, we propose a supersymmetric KSVZ axion model with an approximate universal intermediate-scale ($\sim 10^{11}$ GeV) supersymmetry breaking. To protect the global Peccei--Quinn (PQ) symmetry against quantum gravitational violation, we consider the gauged discrete $Z_N$ PQ symmetry. In our model the axion can be a cold dark matter candidate, and the intermediate supersymmetry breaking scale is directly related to the PQ symmetry breaking scale. Gauge coupling unification can be achieved at about $2.7\times 10^{16}$ GeV. The Higgs mass range is 130 GeV to 160 GeV. We briefly discuss other axion models with high-scale supersymmetry breaking where the stabilization of the axion solution is similar.

Supersymmetric SO(10) Models Inspired by Deconstruction

We consider 4-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric SO(10) models inspired by deconstruction of 5-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric orbifold SO(10) models and high dimensional non-supersymmetric SO(10) models with Wilson line gauge symmetry breaking. We discuss the $SO(10) \times SO(10)$ models with bi-fundamental link fields where the gauge symmetry can be broken down to the Pati-Salam, $SU(5) \times U(1)$, flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ or the standard model like gauge symmetry. We also propose an $SO(10) \times SO(6) \times SO(4)$ model with bi-fundamental link fields where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the Pati-Salam gauge symmetry, and an $SO(10) \times SO(10)$ model with bi-spinor link fields where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry. In these two models, the Pati-Salam and flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry can be further broken down to the standard model gauge symmetry, the doublet-triplet splittings can be obtained by the missing partner mechanism, and the proton decay problem can be solved. We also study the gauge coupling unification. We briefly comment on the interesting variation models with gauge groups $SO(10) \times SO(6)$ and $SO(10) \times flipped SU(5) \times U(1)'$ in which the proton decay problem can be solved.

Supersymmetric Pati-Salam Models from Intersecting D6-branes: A Road to the Standard Model

We provide a systematic construction of three-family N=1 supersymmetric Pati-Salam models from Type IIA orientifolds on $\IT^6/(\IZ_2\times \IZ_2)$ with intersecting D6-branes. All the gauge symmetry factors $SU(4)_C\times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ arise from the stacks of D6-branes with U(n) gauge symmetries, while the ``hidden sector'' is specified by $USp(n)$ branes, parallel with the orientifold planes or their ${\bf Z_2}$ images. The Pati-Salam gauge symmetry can be broken down to the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_{B-L} \times U(1)_{I_{3R}}$ via D6-brane splittings, and further down to the Standard Model via D- and F-flatness preserving Higgs mechanism from massless open string states in a N=2 subsector. The models also possess at least two confining hidden gauge sectors, where gaugino condensation can in turn trigger supersymmetry breaking and (some) moduli stabilization. The systematic search yields 11 inequivalent models: 8 models with less than 9 Standard model Higgs doublet-pairs and 1 model with only 2 Standard Model Higgs doublet-pairs, 2 models possess at the string scale the gauge coupling unification of $SU(2)_L$ and $SU(2)_R$, and all the models possess additional exotic matters. We also make preliminary comments on phenomenological implications of these models.

D6-brane Splitting on Type IIA Orientifolds

We study the open-string moduli of supersymmetric D6-branes, addressing both the string and field theory aspects of D6-brane splitting on Type IIA orientifolds induced by open-string moduli Higgsing (i.e., their obtaining VEVs). Specifically, we focus on the Z_2 x Z_2 orientifolds and address the symmetry breaking pattern for D6-branes parallel with the orientifold 6-planes as well as those positioned at angles. We demonstrate that the string theory results, i.e., D6-brane splitting and relocating in internal space, are in one to one correspondence with the field theory results associated with the Higgsing of moduli in the antisymmetric representation of Sp(2N) gauge symmetry (for branes parallel with orientifold planes) or adjoint representation of U(N) (for branes at general angles). In particular, the moduli Higgsing in the open-string sector results in the change of the gauge structure of D6-branes and thus changes the chiral spectrum and family number as well. As a by-product, we provide the new examples of the supersymmetric Standard-like models with the electroweak sector arising from Sp(2N)_L x Sp(2N)_R gauge symmetry; and one four-family example is free of chiral Standard Model exotics.

Gauge-Fermion Unification and Flavour Symmetry

After we study the 6-dimensional ${\cal N} = (1, 1)$ supersymmetry breaking and $R$ symmetry breaking on $M^4\times T^2/Z_n$, we construct two ${\cal N} = (1, 1)$ supersymmetric $E_6$ models on $M^4\times T^2/Z_3$ where $E_6$ is broken down to $SO(10)\times U(1)_X$ by orbifold projection. In Model I, three families of the Standard Model fermions arise from the zero modes of bulk vector multiplet, and the $R$ symmetry $U(1)_F^{I} \times SU(2)_{{\bf 4}_-}$ can be considered as flavour symmetry. This may explain why there are three families of fermions in the nature. In Model II, the first two families come from the zero modes of bulk vector multiplet, and the flavour symmetry is similar. In these models, the anomalies can be cancelled, and we have very good fits to the SM fermion masses and mixings. We also comment on the ${\cal N}=(1, 1)$ supersymmetric $E_6$ models on $M^4\times T^2/Z_4$ and $M^4\times T^2/Z_6$, SU(9) models on $M^4\times T^2/Z_3$, and SU(8) models on $T^2$ orbifolds.
