Measurement of the high-energy all-flavor neutrino-nucleon cross section with IceCube

The flux of high-energy neutrinos passing through the Earth is attenuated due to their interactions with matter. Their transmission probability is modulated by the neutrino interaction cross section and affects the arrival flux at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a cubic-kilometer neutrino detector embedded in the South Pole ice sheet. We present a measurement of the neutrino-nucleon cross section between 60 TeV--10 PeV using the high-energy starting events (HESE) sample from IceCube with 7.5 years of data.

Tackling limited simulation and small signals

We present a new, analytic, Poisson likelihood derived, technique to account for the statistical uncertainties inherent in simulation samples of limited size. This method has better coverage properties than other techniques, is valid for small data samples, and maintains good computational performance.

The 8-parameter Fisher-Bingham distribution on the sphere

The Fisher-Bingham distribution ($\mathrm{FB}_8$) is an eight-parameter family of probability density functions (PDF) on $S^2$ that, under certain conditions, reduce to spherical analogues of bivariate normal PDFs. Due to difficulties in computing its overall normalization constant, applications have been mainly restricted to subclasses of $\mathrm{FB}_8$, such as the Kent ($\mathrm{FB}_5$) or von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distributions. However, these subclasses often do not adequately describe directional data that are not symmetric along great circles. The normalizing constant of $\mathrm{FB}_8$ can be numerically integrated, and recently Kume and Sei showed that it can be computed using an adjusted holonomic gradient method. Both approaches, however, can be computationally expensive. In this paper, I show that the normalization of $\mathrm{FB}_8$ can be expressed as an infinite sum consisting of hypergeometric functions, similar to that of the $\mathrm{FB}_5$. This allows the normalization to be computed under summation with adequate stopping conditions. I then fit the $\mathrm{FB}_8$ to a synthetic dataset using a maximum-likelihood approach and show its improvements over a fit with the more restrictive $\mathrm{FB}_5$ distribution.

A binned likelihood for stochastic models

Metrics of model goodness-of-fit, model comparison, and model parameter estimation are the main categories of statistical problems in science. Bayesian and frequentist methods that address these questions often rely on a likelihood function, which is the key ingredient in order to assess the plausibility of model parameters given observed data. In some complex systems or experimental setups, predicting the outcome of a model cannot be done analytically, and Monte Carlo techniques are used. In this paper, we present a new analytic likelihood that takes into account Monte Carlo uncertainties, appropriate for use in the large and small sample size limits. Our formulation performs better than semi-analytic methods, prevents strong claims on biased statements, and provides improved coverage properties compared to available methods.

Unified atmospheric neutrino passing fractions for large-scale neutrino telescopes

The atmospheric neutrino passing fraction, or self-veto, is defined as the probability for an atmospheric neutrino not to be accompanied by a detectable muon from the same cosmic-ray air shower. Building upon previous work, we propose a redefinition of the passing fractions by unifying the treatment for muon and electron neutrinos. Several approximations have also been removed. This enables performing detailed estimations of the uncertainties in the passing fractions from several inputs: muon losses, cosmic-ray spectrum, hadronic-interaction models and atmosphere-density profiles. We also study the passing fractions under variations of the detector configuration: depth, surrounding medium and muon veto trigger probability. The calculation exhibits excellent agreement with passing fractions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, we provide a general software framework to implement this veto technique for all large-scale neutrino observatories.

Measurement of the muon-neutrino charged-current cross section on water with zero pions

The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a 295-km long-baseline neutrino experiment aimed towards the measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$. Precise measurement of these parameters requires accurate knowledge of neutrino cross sections. We present a flux-averaged double differential measurement of the charged-current cross section on water with zero pions in the final state using the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. A selection of $ν_μ$ charged- current events occurring in the Pi-Zero subdetector (PØD) of ND280 is performed with $5.8 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. The charged, outgoing tracks are required to enter and be identified by the ND280 Tracker. The cross section is determined using an unfolding technique. By separating the dataset into time periods when the PØD water layers are filled with water and when they are empty, a subtraction method provides a distribution of $ν_μ$ interactions on water only. Systematic uncertainties on the neutrino flux, interaction model, and detector simulation are propagated numerically within the unfolding framework.
