Observation of Body-Centered Cubic Iron above 200 Gigapascals

The crystallographic structure of iron under extreme conditions is a key benchmark for cutting-edge experimental and numerical methods. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in understanding planetary cores, as it significantly influences the interpretation of observational data and, consequently, insights into their internal structure and dynamics. However, even the structure of pure solid iron under the Earth's core conditions remains uncertain, with the commonly expected hexagonal close-packed structure energetically competitive with various cubic lattices. In this study, iron was compressed in a diamond anvil cell to above 200 GPa, and dynamically probed near the melting point using MHz frequency X-ray pulses from the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. The emergence of an additional diffraction line at high temperatures suggests the formation of an entropically stabilized bcc structure. Rapid heating and cooling cycles captured intermediate phases, offering new insights into iron's phase transformation paths. The appearance of the bcc phase near melting at extreme pressures challenges current understanding of the iron phase diagram under Earth's core conditions.

iTV: Inferring Traffic Violation-Prone Locations with Vehicle Trajectories and Road Environment Data

Traffic violations like illegal parking, illegal turning, and speeding have become one of the greatest challenges in urban transportation systems, bringing potential risks of traffic congestions, vehicle accidents, and parking difficulties. To maximize the utility and effectiveness of the traffic enforcement strategies aiming at reducing traffic violations, it is essential for urban authorities to infer the traffic violation-prone locations in the city. Therefore, we propose a low-cost, comprehensive, and dynamic framework to infer traffic violation-prone locations in cities based on the large-scale vehicle trajectory data and road environment data. Firstly, we normalize the trajectory data by map matching algorithms and extract key driving behaviors, i.e., turning behaviors, parking behaviors, and speeds of vehicles. Secondly, we restore spatiotemporal contexts of driving behaviors to get corresponding traffic restrictions such as no parking, no turning, and speed restrictions. After matching the traffic restrictions with driving behaviors, we get the traffic violation distribution. Finally, we extract the spatiotemporal patterns of traffic violations, and build a visualization system to showcase the inferred traffic violation-prone locations. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive studies on large-scale, real-world vehicle GPS trajectories collected from two Chinese cities, respectively. Evaluation results confirm that the proposed framework infers traffic violation-prone locations effectively and efficiently, providing comprehensive decision supports for traffic enforcement strategies.

Direct temporal mode measurement for the characterization of temporally multiplexed high dimensional quantum entanglement in continuous variables

Field-orthogonal temporal mode analysis of optical fields is recently developed for a new framework of quantum information science. But so far, the exact profiles of the temporal modes are not known, which makes it difficult to achieve mode selection and de-multiplexing. Here, we report a novel method that measures directly the exact form of the temporal modes. This in turn enables us to make mode-orthogonal homodyne detection with mode-matched local oscillators. We apply the method to a pulse-pumped, specially engineered fiber parametric amplifier and demonstrate temporally multiplexed multi-dimensional quantum entanglement of continuous variables in telecom wavelength. The temporal mode characterization technique can be generalized to other pulse-excited systems to find their eigen modes for multiplexing in temporal domain.

Generation of pure-state single photons with high heralding efficiency by using a three-stage nonlinear interferometer

We experimentally study a fiber-based three-stage nonlinear interferometer and demonstrate its application in generating heralded single photons with high efficiency and purity by spectral engineering. We obtain a heralding efficiency of 90% at a brightness of 0.039 photons/pulse. The purity of the source is checked by two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 95%+-6% (after correcting Raman scattering and multi-pair events). Our investigation indicates that the heralded source of single photons produced by the three-stage nonlinear interferometer has the advantages of high purity, high heralding efficiency, high brightness, and flexibility in wavelength and bandwidth selection.
