Rotatable Antenna-Enabled Satellite Communication: Joint Design of Boresight Alignment and Beam Tracking

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite links experience rapid angular variation due to high orbital velocities, which causes severe beam misalignment and array gain degradation under conventional fixed-antenna architectures. In this letter, we propose a rotatable antenna (RA)-enabled LEO communication framework, where RA arrays are deployed at both the satellite and the ground node (GN) to exploit antenna boresight reconfiguration as an additional spatial degree-of-freedom (DoF) for maintaining directional alignment under high mobility. By leveraging the rank-one line-of-sight (LoS) channel structure inherent to satellite links, we derive closed-form solutions for the joint design of the transmit/receive beamforming and antenna boresight directions, revealing that optimal performance can be achieved via decoupled alignment across antennas with low computational complexity. To enable practical operation under dynamic conditions, we further develop a channel estimation and beam tracking protocol that exploits the predictable satellite orbit to continuously update boresight directions with low training overhead. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RA-enabled design significantly outperforms fixed and random boresight baselines in terms of achievable rate and robustness to angular variations, highlighting the effectiveness of rotational spatial reconfiguration in high-mobility satellite communications.

Rotatable Antenna-Empowered Wireless Networks: A Tutorial

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. Among them, rotatable antenna (RA) has emerged as a promising technology for enhancing wireless communication and sensing performance through flexible antenna orientation/boresight rotation. By enabling mechanical or electronic boresight adjustment without altering physical antenna positions, RA introduces additional spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) beyond conventional beamforming. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive tutorial on the fundamentals, architectures, and applications of RA-empowered wireless networks. Specifically, we begin by reviewing the historical evolution of RA-related technologies and clarifying the distinctive role of RA among flexible antenna architectures. Then, we establish a unified mathematical framework for RA-enabled systems, including general antenna/array rotation models, as well as channel models that cover near- and far-field propagation characteristics, wideband frequency selectivity, and polarization effects. Building upon this foundation, we investigate antenna/array rotation optimization in representative communication and sensing scenarios. Furthermore, we examine RA channel estimation/acquisition strategies encompassing orientation scheduling mechanisms and signal processing methods that exploit multi-view channel observations. Beyond theoretical modeling and algorithmic design, we discuss practical RA configurations and deployment strategies. We also present recent RA prototypes and experimental results that validate the practical performance gains enabled by antenna rotation. Finally, we highlight promising extensions of RA to emerging wireless paradigms and outline open challenges to inspire future research.

Rotatable Antenna Enabled Wireless Communication and Sensing: Opportunities and Challenges

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. Among them, rotatable antenna (RA) is an emerging technology that offers significant potential to enhance wireless communication and sensing performance by flexibly adjusting the boresight of directional antennas. Specifically, RA can flexibly reconfigure its boresight direction via mechanical or electronic means, thereby improving communication channel conditions and/or enhancing sensing resolution and range. In this article, we first provide an overview of RA, covering its hardware architectures and radiation pattern characterization. We then illustrate how RA improves communication performance through interference mitigation, spatial multiplexing, and flexible beamforming, as well as sensing capabilities in terms of coverage, resolution, and multi-target/dimensional sensing. Furthermore, we highlight representative applications of RA and discuss key design challenges in RA systems, including rotational scanning scheduling, channel estimation/sensing, boresight optimization, and RA configuration. Finally, both experimental and simulation results are provided to validate the performance gains achieved by RA for both communication and sensing. Leveraging its unique capabilities in flexible antenna/array rotation to adapt to various communication/sensing requirements and channel conditions, RA is poised to become a key enabler of future intelligent, resilient, and agile wireless networks.

Rotatable Antenna-Enabled Wireless Communication: Modeling and Optimization

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. In this paper, we propose a new rotatable antenna (RA) model to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. Different from conventional fixed antennas, the proposed RA system can flexibly and independently alter the boresight direction of each antenna via mechanical or electronic means to exploit new spatial degrees-of-freedom (DoFs). Specifically, we investigate an RA-enabled uplink communication system, where the receive beamforming and the boresight directions of all RAs at the base station (BS) are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the users. In the special single-user and free-space propagation setup, the optimal boresight directions of RAs are derived in closed form with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) beamformer applied at the BS. In the general multi-user and multipath channel setup, we first propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to alternately optimize the receive beamforming and the boresight directions of RAs in an iterative manner. Then, a two-stage algorithm that solves the formulated problem without the need for iteration is proposed to further reduce computational complexity. Moreover, we extend the channel model to incorporate polarization effects and frequency-selective fading while catering to antenna boresight rotation. Simulation results are provided to validate our analytical results and demonstrate that the proposed RA system can significantly improve the communication performance as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Modeling and Optimization for Rotatable Antenna Enabled Wireless Communication

Fluid antenna system (FAS)/movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology to fully exploit the spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs). In this paper, we propose a new rotatable antenna (RA) model, as a simplified implementation of six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA), to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. Different from conventional fixed antenna, the proposed RA system can independently and flexibly change the three-dimensional (3D) orientation/boresight of each antenna by adjusting its deflection angles to achieve desired channel realizations. Specifically, we study an RA-enabled uplink communication system, where the receive beamforming and the deflection angles of all RAs are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the users. In the special single-user and free-space propagation setup, the optimal deflection angles are derived in closed form with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) beamformer applied at the base station (BS). In the general multi-user and multi-path setup, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to alternately optimize the receive beamforming and the deflection angles in an iterative manner. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed RA-enabled system can significantly outperform other benchmark schemes.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Multiuser Communication: Co-design of Transmit Diversity and Active/Passive Precoding

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has become a cost-effective solution for constructing a smart and adaptive radio environment. Most previous works on IRS have jointly designed the active and passive precoding based on perfectly or partially known channel state information (CSI). However, in delay-sensitive or high-mobility communications, it is imperative to explore more effective methods for leveraging IRS to enhance communication reliability without the need for any CSI. In this paper, we investigate an innovative IRS-aided multiuser communication system, which integrates an IRS with its aided multi-antenna base station (BS) to simultaneously serve multiple high-mobility users through transmit diversity and multiple low-mobility users through active/passive precoding. In specific, we first reveal that when dynamically tuning the IRS's common phase-shift shared with all reflecting elements, its passive precoding gain to any low-mobility user remains unchanged. Inspired by this property, we utilize the design of common phase-shift at the IRS for achieving transmit diversity to serve high-mobility users, yet without requiring any CSI at the BS. Meanwhile, the active/passive precoding design is incorporated into the IRS-integrated BS to serve low-mobility users (assuming the CSI is known). Then, taking into account the interference among different users, we formulate and solve a joint optimization problem of the IRS's reflect precoding and the BS's transmit precoding, with the aim of minimizing the total transmit power at the BS.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Enabled Anti-Detection for Secure Sensing and Communications

The ever-increasing reliance on wireless communication and sensing has led to growing concerns over the vulnerability of sensitive information to unauthorized detection and interception. Traditional anti-detection methods are often inadequate, suffering from limited adaptability and diminished effectiveness against advanced detection technologies. To overcome these challenges, this article presents the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) as a groundbreaking technology for enabling flexible electromagnetic manipulation, which has the potential to revolutionize anti-detection in both electromagnetic stealth/spoofing (evading radar detection) and covert communications (facilitating secure information exchange). We explore the fundamental principles of IRS and its advantages over traditional anti-detection techniques and discuss various design challenges associated with implementing IRS-based anti-detection systems. Through the examination of case studies and future research directions, we provide a comprehensive overview of the potential of IRS technology to serve as a formidable shield in the modern wireless landscape.

Crossover Between Non-Markovian and Markovian Dynamics Induced by a Hierarchical Environment

Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be induced by the memory effects of a reservoir. Although a reservoir with stronger memory effects may seem like it should cause stronger non-Markovian effects on the system of interest, this seemingly intuitive thinking may not always be correct. We illustrate this by investigating a qubit (a two-level atom) that is coupled to a hierarchical environment, which contains a single-mode cavity and a reservoir consisting of infinite numbers of modes. We show how the non-Markovian character of the system is influenced by the coupling strength between the qubit and cavity and the correlation time of the reservoir. In particular, we found a new phenomenon whereby the qubit Markovian and non-Markovian transition exhibits a anomalous pattern in a parameter space depicted by the coupling strength and the correlation time of the reservoir.
