A correlated Anderson insulator on the honeycomb lattice

We study the effect of disorder on the semimetal -- Mott insulator transition in the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, a system that features vanishing density of states at the Fermi level. Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we characterize various phases in terms of the bulk-limit antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter, compressibility, and temperature-dependent DC conductivity. In the clean limit, our data are consistent with previous results showing a single quantum critical point separating the semi-metallic and AF Mott insulating phases. With the presence of randomness, a non-magnetic disordered insulating phase emerges. Inside this disordered insulator phase, there is a crossover from a gapless Anderson-like insulator to a gapped Mott-like insulator.

Room temperature magnetism on the zigzag edges of phosphorene nanoribbons

Searching for room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors has evolved into a broad field of material science and spintronics for decades, nevertheless, these novel states remain rare. Phosphorene, a monolayer black phosphorus with a puckered honeycomb lattice structure possessing a finite band gap and high carrier mobility, has been synthesized recently. Here we show, by means of two different large scale quantum Monte-Carlo methods, that relatively weak interactions can lead to remarkable edge magnetism in the phosphorene nanoribbons. The ground state constrained path quantum Monte-Carlo simulations reveal strong ferromagnetic correlations along the zigzag edges, and the finite temperature determinant quantum Monte-Carlo calculations show a high Curie temperature up to room temperature.

Tunable Electronic Band Structures and Zero-Energy Modes of Heterosubstrate-induced Graphene Superlattices

We propose a tunable electronic band gap and zero-energy modes in periodic heterosubstrate-induced graphene superlattices. Interestingly, there is an approximate linear relation between the band gap and the proportion of inhomogeneous substrate (i.e., percentages of different components) in the proposed superlattice, and the effect of structural disorder on the relation is discussed. In inhomogeneous substrate with equal widths, zero-energy states emerge in the form of Dirac points by using asymmetric potentials, and the positions of Dirac points are addressed analytically. Further, the Dirac point exists at $\mathbf{k}=\mathbf{0}$ only for specific potentials; every time it appears, the group velocity vanishes in $k_y$ direction and the resonance occurs. For general cases that inhomogeneous substrate with unequal widths, a part of zero-energy states are described analytically, and differently, they are not always Dirac points. Our prediction may be realized on the heterosubstrate such as SiO$_2$/BN type.

Character of frustration on magnetic correlation in doped Hubbard model

The magnetic correlation in the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice is studied by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Around half filling, it is found that the increasing frustration $t'/t$ could change the wave vector of maximum spin correlation along ($π,π$)$\rightarrow$($π,\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$($\frac{5π}{6},\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$ ($\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3}$), indicating the frustration's remarkable effect on the magnetism. In the studied filling region =1.0-1.3, the doping behaves like some kinds of {\it{frustration}}, which destroys the $(π,π)$ AFM correlation quickly and push the magnetic order to a wide range of the $(\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3})$ $120^{\circ}$ order when the $t'/t$ is large enough. Our non-perturbative calculations reveal a rich magnetic phase diagram over both the frustration and electron doping.

Electronic band gaps and transport properties in periodically alternating mono- and bi-layer graphene superlattices

We investigate the electronic band structure and transport properties of periodically alternating mono- and bi-layer graphene superlattices (MBLG SLs). In such MBLG SLs, there exists a zero-averaged wave vector (zero-$\overline{k}$) gap that is insensitive to the lattice constant. This zero-$\overline{k}$ gap can be controlled by changing both the ratio of the potential widths and the interlayer coupling coefficient of the bilayer graphene. We also show that there exist extra Dirac points; the conditions for these extra Dirac points are presented analytically. Lastly, we demonstrate that the electronic transport properties and the energy gap of the first two bands in MBLG SLs are tunable through adjustment of the interlayer coupling and the width ratio of the periodic mono- and bi-layer graphene.

Triplet $p+ip$ paring correlation in doped Kane-Mele-Hubbard model: A quantum Monte Carlo study

By using the constrained-phase quantum Monte Carlo method, we performed a systematic study of the pairing correlations in the ground state of the doped Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. We find that pairing correlations with $d+id$ symmetry dominate close to half filling, but pairing correlations with $p+ip$ symmetry dominate as hole doping moves the system below three-quarters filling. We correlate these behaviors of the pairing correlations with the topology of the Fermi surfaces of the non-interacting problem. We also find that the effective pairing correlation is enhanced greatly as the interaction increases, and these superconducting correlations are robust against varying the spin-orbit coupling strength. Our numerical results suggest a possible way to realize spin triplet superconductivity in doped honeycomb-like materials or ultracold atoms in optical traps.

Strain induced edge magnetism at zigzag edge in graphene quantum dot

We study the temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility of a strained graphene quantum dot by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Within the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, our unbiased numerical results show that a relative small interaction $U$ may lead to a edge ferromagnetic like behavior in the strained graphene quantum dot, and a possible room temperature transition is suggested. Around half filling, the ferromagnetic fluctuations at the zigzag edge is strengthened both markedly by the on-site Coulomb interaction and the strain, especially in low temperature region. The resultant strongly enhanced ferromagnetic like behavior may be important for the development of many applications.

Possible Triplet $p+ip$ Superconductivity in Graphene at Low Filling

We study the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping ($t>0$) and next-nearest-neighbor one ($t'<0$). When $t'<-t/6$, the single-particle spectrum is featured by the continuously distributed Van-Hove saddle points at the band bottom, where the density of states diverges in power-law. We investigate possible unconventional superconductivity in such system with Fermi level close to the band bottom by employing both random phase approximation and determinant quantum Monte-Carlo approaches. Our study reveals a possible triplet $p+ip$ superconductivity in this system with appropriate interactions. Our results might provide a possible route to look for triplet superconductivity with relatively-high transition temperature in a low-filled graphene and other similar systems.

Electronic Bloch oscillation in bilayer graphene gradient superlattices

We investigate the electronic Bloch oscillation in bilayer graphene gradient superlattices using transfer matrix method. By introducing two kinds of gradient potentials of square barriers along electrons propagation direction, we find that Bloch oscillations up to terahertz can occur. Wannier-Stark ladders, as the counterpart of Bloch oscillation, are obtained as a series of equidistant transmission peaks, and the localization of the electronic wave function is also signature of Bloch oscillation. Forthermore, the period of Bloch oscillation decreases linearly with increasing gradient of barrier potentials.

Ground state pairing correlations in the $S_4$ symmetric microscopic model for iron-based superconductors

We present the ground state pairing correlations in the $S_4$ symmetric microscopic model for iron-based superconductors, computed with the constrained-path Monte Carlo method. For various electron fillings and interaction strengths, we find that the $s_{xy}$ pairing dominates over other pairing correlations and is positive when the pair separation exceeds several lattice constants, whatever for iron pnictides and iron chlcogenides. These ground state properties, especially the long range part pairing correlations re-confirm the previous finite temperature results published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 107002(2013). We further our study by including the nearest neighbour interaction $V$ and it is found that the $s_{xy}$ pairing correlation is slightly suppressed by the increasing $V$.

Electronic band gaps and transport properties in aperiodic bilayer graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence

We investigate electronic band structure and transport properties in bilayer graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence. It is interesting to find that the zero-$\bar{k}$ gap center is sensitive to interlayer coupling $t'$, and the centers of all gaps shift versus $t'$ at a linear way. Extra Dirac points may emerge at $k_{y}\ne$0, and when the extra Dirac points are generated in pairs, the electronic conductance obeys a diffusive law, and the Fano factor tends to be 1/3 as the order of Thue-Morse sequence increases. Our results provide a flexible and effective way to control the transport properties in graphene.

Numerical study of magnetic and pairing correlation in bilayer triangular lattice

By using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method, the magnetic and pairing correlation of the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$yH$_{2}$O system are studied within the Hubbard model on a bilayer triangular lattice. The temperature dependence of spin correlation function and pairing susceptibility with several kinds of symmetries at different electron fillings and inter layer coupling terms are investigated. It is found that the system shows an antiferromagnetic correlation around the half filling, and the $fn$-wave pairing correlation dominates over other kinds of pairing symmetry in the low doping region. As the electron filling decreases away from the half filling, both the ferromagnetic correlation and the $f$-wave paring susceptibility are enhanced and tend to dominate. It is also shown that both the magnetic susceptibility and paring susceptibility decrease as the inter layer coupling increases.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of Pairing Symmetry and Correlation in Iron-based Superconductors

We perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the $S_4$ symmetric microscopic model for iron-based superconductors. It is found that the pairing with an extensive s-wave symmetry robustly dominates over other pairings at low temperature in reasonable parameter region. The pairing susceptibility, the effective pairing interaction and the $(π,0)$antiferromagnetic correlation strongly increase as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, indicating the importance of the effect of electron-electron correlation. Our non-biased numerical results provide a unified understanding of superconducting mechanism in iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides and demonstrate that the superconductivity is driven by strong electron-electron correlation effects.

Impurity-induced bound states in superconductors with topological order

The study of classical spins in topological insulators [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 115216 (2009)] is generalized to topological superconductors. Based on the characteristic features of the so-called $F$-function, Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for superconductors is classified to positive, negative, and zero "gap" categories for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases of a topological superconductor as well as a BCS superconductor respectively. It is found that the $F$-function determines directly the presence or absence of localized excited states, induced by bulk classical spins and nonmagnetic impurities, in superconducting gap and their persistence with respect to impurity strength. Our results provide an alternative way to identify topologically insulating and superconducting phases in experiments while without resorting to the surface properties.

Electronic band gaps and transport in aperiodic graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence

We have studied the electronic properties in aperiodic graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence. Although the structure is aperiodic, an unusual Dirac point (DP) does exist and its location is exactly at the position of the zero-averaged wave number (zero-$\bar{k})$. Furthermore, the zero-$\bar{k}$ gap associated with the DP is robust against the lattice constants and the incident angles, and multi-DPs can appear under the suitable conditions. A resultant controllability of electron transport in Thue-Morse sequence is predicted, which may facilitate the development of many graphene-based electronics.

Pairing in graphene: A quantum Monte Carlo study

To address the issue of electron correlation driven superconductivity in graphene, we perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the t-U-V Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. For V=0 and close to half filling, we find that pairing with d+id symmetry dominates pairing with extended-s symmetry. However, as the system size or the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, the long-range part of the d+id pairing correlation decreases and tends to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. An inclusion of nearest-neighbor interaction V, either repulsive or attractive, has a small effect on the extended-s pairing correlation, but strongly suppresses the d+id pairing correlation.

Magnetic Impurities in Graphene

We used a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the magnetic impurity adatoms on graphene. We found that by tuning the chemical potential we could switch the values of the impurity's local magnet moment between relatively large and small values. Our computations of the impurity's spectral density found its behavior to differ significantly from that of an impurity in a normal metal and our computations of the charge-charge and spin-spin correlations between the impurity and the conduction band electrons found them to be strongly suppressed. In general our results are consistent with those from poor man's scaling and numerical renormalization group methods.

Controllability of ferromagnetism in graphene

We systematically study magnetic correlations in graphene within Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the filling region below the Van Hove singularity, the system shows a short-range ferromagnetic correlation, which is slightly strengthened by the on-site Coulomb interaction and markedly by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral. The ferromagnetic properties depend on the electron filling strongly, which may be manipulated by the electric gate. Due to its resultant controllability of ferromagnetism, graphene-based samples may facilitate the development of many applications.
