Iterated Agent for Symbolic Regression

Symbolic regression (SR), the automated discovery of mathematical expressions from data, is a cornerstone of scientific inquiry. However, it is often hindered by the combinatorial explosion of the search space and a tendency to overfit. Popular methods, rooted in genetic programming, explore this space syntactically, often yielding overly complex, uninterpretable models. This paper introduces IdeaSearchFitter, a framework that employs Large Language Models (LLMs) as semantic operators within an evolutionary search. By generating candidate expressions guided by natural-language rationales, our method biases discovery towards models that are not only accurate but also conceptually coherent and interpretable. We demonstrate IdeaSearchFitter's efficacy across diverse challenges: it achieves competitive, noise-robust performance on the Feynman Symbolic Regression Database (FSReD), outperforming several strong baselines; discovers mechanistically aligned models with good accuracy-complexity trade-offs on real-world data; and derives compact, physically-motivated parametrizations for Parton Distribution Functions in a frontier high-energy physics application. IdeaSearchFitter is a specialized module within our broader iterated agent framework, IdeaSearch, which is publicly available at https://www.ideasearch.cn/.

A generalized statistical model for fits to parton distributions

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) form an essential part of particle physics calculations. Currently, the most precise predictions for these non-perturbative functions are generated through fits to global data. A problem that several PDF fitting groups encounter is the presence of tension in data sets that appear to pull the fits in different directions. In other words, the best fit depends on the choice of data set. Several methods to capture the uncertainty in PDFs in presence of seemingly inconsistent fits have been proposed and are currently in use. These methods are important to ensure that uncertainty in PDFs are not underestimated. Here we propose a novel method for estimating the uncertainty by introducing a generalized statistical model based on Bayesian Hierarchical models which is implemented via the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). The methodology is inspired by unsupervised machine learning techniques and is closely related to the statistical methods of Ensemble learning and Bayesian model averaging. Using a toy model of PDFs, we demonstrate how the GMM can be used to faithfully reconstruct the likelihood associated with PDF fits, which can in turn be used to accurately determine the uncertainty on PDFs, especially in the presence of tension in the fitted data sets. We further show how this statistical model reduces to the usual chi-squared likelihood function for a consistent data set and provide measures to optimize the number of Gaussians in the GMM.

Impact of lattice gluon dataset on CTEQ-TEA global PDFs

We investigate the impact of the latest gluon parton results from lattice QCD on the global parton distribution function (PDF) analysis within the CTEQ-TEA framework. The dependence on PDF parameterization is explored using the CT18As variant, incorporating the ATLAS 7 TeV precision $W,Z$ dataset and introducing more flexible parameters to allow strangeness asymmetry at the starting scale $Q_0$. The interplay between lattice input and collider inclusive jet datasets is examined by including the post-CT18 inclusive jet datasets from recent LHC measurements and/or removing all collider inclusive jet datasets. Finally, we demonstrate several phenomenological implications at the LHC, focusing on gluon-gluon parton luminosity and related processes, such as the production of a Higgs-like scalar, top-quark pairs, and their associated production with an additional jet, Higgs, or $Z$ boson.

The impact of LHC precision measurements of inclusive jet and dijet production on the CTEQ-TEA global PDF fit

In this study, we investigate the impact of new LHC inclusive jet and dijet measurements on parton distribution functions (PDFs) that describe the proton structure, with a particular focus on the gluon distribution at large momentum fraction, $x$, and the corresponding partonic luminosities. We assess constraints from these datasets using next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) theoretical predictions, accounting for a range of uncertainties from scale dependence and numerical integration. From the scale choices available for the calculations, our analysis shows that the central predictions for inclusive jet production show a smaller scale dependence than dijet production. We examine the relative constraints on the gluon distribution provided by the inclusive jet and dijet distributions and also explore the phenomenological implications for inclusive $H$, $t\bar{t}$, and $t\bar{t}H$ production at the LHC at 14 TeV.

Progress in top-quark pair production cross section calculations and impact on parton distribution functions of the proton

We discuss the impact of eligible top-quark pair production differential cross-section measurements at the LHC with a collision energy of 13 TeV on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton as well as the impact of approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (aN$^3$LO) QCD corrections combined with next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections on $t\bar t$ observables. We illustrate the effects on the gluon PDF at large $x$ from an optimal baseline selection of data in NNLO global fits, and show comparisons between the theory prediction for $t\bar t$ total and differential cross sections at aN$^3$LO QCD combined with NLO EW and recent measurements from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC.

Exploring the impact of high-precision top-quark pair production data on the structure of the proton at the LHC

The impact of recent LHC top-quark pair production single differential cross section measurements at 13 TeV collision energy on the structure of the proton is explored. In particular, the impact of these high-precision data on the gluon and other parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton at intermediate and large partonic momentum fraction $x$ is analyzed. This study extends the CT18 global analysis framework to include these new data. The interplay between top-quark pair and inclusive jet production as well as other processes at the LHC, is studied. In addition, a study of the impact of scale choice on the theory description of the new 13 TeV $t\bar t$ measurements is performed.

Precision studies of the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

In this study, we examine closely the impact of the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data on parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the general CTEQ-TEA global analysis framework. We compare the two main theoretical predictions, the MCFM fixed order calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and the ResBos2 NNLO matched to $q_T$ resummation up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N3LL) level. We find that the overall inclusive cross sections agree well but the fiducial distributions can differ at a percent level. We mainly discuss the result of the ResBos2 resummation calculation which yields a smaller Monte-Carlo uncertainty, and a better description to the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data. We find that the majority of post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data are consistent with the ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ data, which were included in the CT18A, but not CT18, fit and increases the strange quark distribution at the small $x$ region. The noticeable exception is that the ATLAS and LHCb 8 TeV $W$ data pull $d(\bar{d})$ quark PDFs to the opposite direction with respect to the ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ data. The inclusion of these post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data sets in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis is to update the CT18 PDFs following similar trends as CT18Z PDFs. The parton luminosities and a few phenomenological implications with the fiducial $W^\pm,Z$ and inclusive $H,t\bar{t},t\bar{t}H$ productions at the 14 TeV LHC, as examples, are presented.

The photon PDF within the CT18 global analysis

Building upon the most recent CT18 global fit, we present a new calculation of the photon content of the proton based on an application of the LUX formalism. In this work, we explore two principal variations of the LUX ansatz. In one approach, which we designate "CT18lux," the photon PDF is calculated directly using the LUX formula for all scales, $μ$. In an alternative realization, "CT18qed," we instead initialize the photon PDF in terms of the LUX formulation at a lower scale, $μ\! \sim\! μ_0$, and evolve to higher scales with a combined QED+QCD kernel at $\mathcal{O}(α),~\mathcal{O}(αα_s)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$. While we find these two approaches generally agree, especially at intermediate $x$ ($10^{-3}\lesssim x\lesssim0.3$), we discuss some moderate discrepancies that can occur toward the end-point regions at very high or low $x$. We also study effects that follow from variations of the inputs to the LUX calculation originating outside the pure deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) region, including from elastic form factors and other contributions to the photon PDF. Finally, we investigate the phenomenological implications of these photon PDFs for the LHC, including high-mass Drell-Yan, vector-boson pair, top-quark pair, and Higgs associated with vector-boson production.

Impact of Lattice Strangeness Asymmetry Data in the CTEQ-TEA Global Analysis

We study the impact of lattice data on the determination of the strangeness asymmetry distribution $s_-(x) \equiv s(x) - {\bar s}(x)$ in the general CTEQ-TEA global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Firstly, we find that allowing a nonvanishing $s_-(x)$, at the initial $Q_0=1.3$~GeV scale, in a global PDF analysis leads to a CT18As fit with similar quality to CT18A. Secondly, including the lattice data in the CT18As\_Lat fit greatly reduces the $s_-$-PDF error band size in the large-$x$ region. To further reduce its error would require more precise lattice data, extended to smaller $x$ values. We take ATLAS 7 TeV $W$ and $Z$ production data, SIDIS di-muon production data, $F_3$ structure function data, E866 NuSea data, and E906 SeaQuest data as examples to illustrate the implication of CT18As and CT18As\_Lat fits. The parametrization dependence for PDF ratio $(s+\bar{s})/(\bar{u}+\bar{d})(x)$ is analyzed with CT18As2 and CT18As2\_Lat fits as results.

Connected and Disconnected Sea Partons from CT18 Parametrization of PDFs

The separation of the connected and disconnected sea partons, which were uncovered in the Euclidean path-integral formulation of the hadronic tensor, is accommodated with an alternative parametrization of the non-perturbative parton distribution functions in the CT18 global analysis. This is achieved with the help of the distinct small $x$ behaviours of these two sea partons and the constraint from the lattice calculation of the ratio of the strange momentum fraction to that of the $\bar u$ or $\bar d$ in the disconnected insertion. The whole dataset of CT18 is used in this CT18CS fit. The impact of the recent SeaQuest data on the $\bar{d}(x)-\bar{u}(x)$ distribution of CT18CS is also discussed. The separate momentum fractions for the valence, the connected sea and disconnected sea of $u$ and $d$, the strange and the gluon partons are presented at $μ=1.3$ GeV for the first time. They can be compared term-by-term with systematic error controlled lattice calculations.

Measurement of the proton structure parameters in the forward-backward charge asymmetry

The forward-backward asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) in the Drell-Yan process $pp/p\bar p \to Z/γ^* \to \ell^+\ell^-$ is sensitive to the proton structure information. Such information has been factorized into well-defined proton structure parameters which can be regarded as experimental observables. In this paper, we extract the structure parameters from the $A_{FB}$ distributions reported by the CMS collaboration in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV, and by the D0 collaboration in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV. It is the first time that the unique parton information in the $A_{FB}$ spectrum can be decoupled from the electroweak calculation and measured as standalone observables, which can be used as new data constraints in the global quantum chromodynamics analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Although the parton information in the $pp$ and $p\bar p$ collisions are different, and the precisions of the measured structure parameters are statistically limited, the results from both the hadron colliders indicate that the down quark contribution might be higher than the theoretical predictions with the current PDFs at the relevant momentum fraction range.

Heavy-flavor impact on CTEQ-TEA global QCD analyses

We discuss heavy-flavor production at hadron colliders in recent global QCD analyses to determine parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. We discuss heavy-flavor treatments in precision theory predictions at the LHC. In particular, we discuss factorization schemes in presence of heavy flavors in proton-proton collisions, as well as the impact of heavy-flavor production at the LHC on PDFs. We show results of recent updates beyond CT18, the latest global QCD analysis from the CTEQ-TEA group.

Boost Asymmetry of the diboson productions in pp collisions

We propose the boost asymmetry of the diboson productions in pp collisions as a new experimental observable, which can provide unique information on the proton structure. The boost asymmetry rises as the difference in the kinematics of the two bosons, that are coupled to the two different quark and antiquark initial states, respectively, and thus reflects different features of the quark and antiquark parton densities. By comparing the kinematics of the two bosons, such as the boson energy or rapidity, the diboson events with antiquark having higher energy than quark can be distinguished from those with quark having higher energy than antiquark. This would provide unique information in some special parton momentum fraction regions, which cannot be directly proved by current W and Z measurements at the Large Hadron Collider or other deep inelastic scattering experients.

Factorization of the forward-backward charge asymmetry and measurements of the weak mixing angle and proton structure at hadron colliders

The forward-backward charge asymmetry (AFB) at hadron colliders is sensitive to both the electroweak (EW) symmetry breaking represented by the effective weak mixing angle, and the proton structure information in the initial state modeled by the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Due to their strong correlation, the precisions of the determination on the weak mixing angle and PDFs using the measured AFB spectrum are limited. In this paper, we define a set of structure parameters which factorize the unique proton information of the relative difference between quarks and antiquarks in the AFB observation. Other than the conventional way of extracting the weak mixing angle fro the convolution of PDF and EW calculations, we propose a new method to simultaneously determine the value of the weak mixing angle and the proton structure terms by fitting to the observed AFB distribution, and point out the necessity of specifying additional observations to further reduce the uncertainties on the proton structure terms respectively, so that the model-independent high precision measurements can be achieved at the future LHC experiments.

A CT18 global PDF fit at the leading order in QCD

In this paper, we present a CT18 PDFs fitted with Leading-Order QCD perturbation theory. The CT18 LO PDFs is obtained within the general CT18 framework, along with two additional treatments being imposed to improve the quality of the fit. We take the $W$-boson charge asymmetry and inclusive single-top production at LHC as examples to illustrate the implication of the CT18 LO PDFs.

The PDF4LHC21 combination of global PDF fits for the LHC Run III

A precise knowledge of the quark and gluon structure of the proton, encoded by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), is of paramount importance for the interpretation of high-energy processes at present and future lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron colliders. Motivated by recent progress in the PDF determinations carried out by the CT, MSHT, and NNPDF groups, we present an updated combination of global PDF fits: PDF4LHC21. It is based on the Monte Carlo combination of the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets followed by either its Hessian reduction or its replica compression. Extensive benchmark studies are carried out in order to disentangle the origin of the differences between the three global PDF sets. In particular, dedicated fits based on almost identical theory settings and input datasets are performed by the three groups, highlighting the role played by the respective fitting methodologies. We compare the new PDF4LHC21 combination with its predecessor, PDF4LHC15, demonstrating their good overall consistency and a modest reduction of PDF uncertainties for key LHC processes such as electroweak gauge boson production and Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. We study the phenomenological implications of PDF4LHC21 for a representative selection of inclusive, fiducial, and differential cross sections at the LHC. The PDF4LHC21 combination is made available via the LHAPDF library and provides a robust, user-friendly, and efficient method to estimate the PDF uncertainties associated to theoretical calculations for the upcoming Run III of the LHC and beyond.

NNLO constraints on proton PDFs from the SeaQuest and STAR experiments and other developments in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

We review progress in the global QCD analysis by the CTEQ-TEA group since the publication of CT18 parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Specifically, we discuss comparisons of CT18 NNLO predictions with the LHC 13 TeV measurements as well as with the FNAL SeaQuest and BNL STAR data on lepton pair production. The specialized CT18X PDFs approximating saturation effects are compared with the CT18sx PDFs obtained using NLL/NLO small-$x$ resummation. Short summaries are presented for the special CT18 parton distributions with fitted charm and with lattice QCD inputs. A recent comparative analysis of the impact of deuteron nuclear effects on the parton distributions by the CTEQ-JLab and CTEQ-TEA groups is summarized.
