Structural Trends and Itinerant Magnetism of the New Cage-structured Compound HfMn$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$

A new cage-structured compound - HfMn$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ - belonging to the AB$_{2}$C$_{20}$ (A, B = transition or rare earth metals, and C = Al, Zn, or Cd) family of structures has been synthesized via the self-flux method. The new compound crystallizes in the space group Fd-3m with lattice parameter a = 14.0543(2) Å (Z = 8) and exhibits non-stoichiometry due to Mn/Zn mixing on the Mn-site and an underoccupied Hf-site. The structure refines to Hf$_{0.93}$Mn$_{1.63}$Zn$_{20.37}$ and follows lattice size trends when compared to other HfM$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) structures. The magnetic measurements show that this compound displays a modified Curie-Weiss behavior with a transition temperature around 22 K. The magnetization shows no saturation, a small magnetic moment, and near negligible hysteresis, all signs of the itinerant magnetism. The Rhodes-Wohlfarth ratio and the spin fluctuation parameters ratio both confirm the itinerant nature of the magnetism in HfMn$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$.

Vacancy defect control of colossal thermopower in FeSb2

Iron diantimonide is a material with the highest known thermoelectric power. By combining scanning transmission electron microscope study with electronic transport neutron, X-ray scattering and first principle calculation we identify atomic defects that control colossal thermopower magnitude and nanoprecipitate clusters with Sb vacancy ordering which induce additional phonon scattering and substantially reduce thermal conductivity. Defects are found to cause rather weak but important monoclinic distortion of the unit cell Pnnm to Pm. The absence of Sb along [010] for high defect concentration forms conducting path due to Fe d orbital overlap. The connection between atomic defect anisotropy and colossal thermopower in FeSb2 paves the way for the understanding and tailoring of giant thermopower in related materials.

Mini Volume Collapse as Evidence for a 3-Body Magnetic Polaron in $Sm_{1-x}Eu_xS$

Samarium sulfide (SmS) is a non-magnetic narrow-gap (0.06 eV) semiconductor which undergoes a transition to a metallic intermediate valence state at 6.5 kbar. Europium sulfide (EuS) is a ferromagnetic semiconductor with a Curie temperature of 16K and a gap of 1.6 eV. Here we present a study of the lattice constant, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity of the substitution series $Sm_{1-x}Eu_xS$ for 0 < x < 1. We observe a smooth interpolation of magnetic and transport behavior across the series, consistent with a virtual crystal scenario and Vegard's law. Surprisingly, however, the lattice constant deviates below Vegard's law in a manner that suggests parametric control of the Sm-Sm distance by the Eu moment in the manner of a magnetic polaron.

Growth of EuO single crystals at reduced temperatures

Single crystals of (Eu$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$)O have been grown in a molten barium-magnesium metal flux at temperatures up to 1000°C, producing single crystals of (Eu$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$)O with barium doping levels ranging from $x=0.03$ to $x=0.25$. Magnetic measurements show that the ferromagnetic Curie temperature T$_C$ correlates with the Ba doping levels, and a modified Heisenberg model was used to describe the stoichiometry dependence of T$_C$. Extrapolation of the results indicates that a sample with Ba concentration of $x=0.72$ should have a T$_C$ of 0 K, potentially producing a quantum phase transition in this material.

Non-stoichiometry and Defects in the Weyl Semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbP, and NbAs

We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbP, and NbAs, utilizing diffraction techniques (single crystal x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy) and imaging techniques (transmission electron microscopy/scanning transmission electron microscopy). We observe defects of various degrees, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of all four semimetals. While TaP displays a large pnictide deficiency with composition TaP$_{0.83(3)}$, and stacking faults accompanied by anti-site disorder and site vacancies, TaAs displays transition metal deficiency with composition Ta$_{0.92(2)}$As and a high density of stacking faults. NbP also displays pnictide deficiency, yielding composition NbP$_{0.95(2)}$, and lastly, NbAs display very little deviation from a 1:1 composition, NbAs$_{1.00(3)}$, and is therefore recommended to serve as the model compound for these semimetals.
