SPICY 30021: an embedded bona fide FUor with a mid-infrared precursor

Unstable mass accretion in young stellar objects (YSOs) often leads to observable outbursts, which play a key role in stellar mass assembly during pre-main-sequence evolution. The highest-amplitude, longest-duration events are classified as FUors. Until recently, only 50 FUor events had been confirmed. Many occur in embedded protostars, which are difficult to monitor in optical surveys. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SPICY 30021, an eruptive young star discovered in the mid-infrared (MIR) NEOWISE time series. We aim to construct its spectral energy distribution and characterise its eruptive nature. We compiled multi-wavelength photometric time series from NEOWISE, VVV and VVV-RENEW, and obtained photometric and spectroscopic observations during the outburst with SOAR, Magellan and VLT, including data from the ESO public survey VVVX-GalCen. We identified the outbursting source, separated it from nearby companions, and estimated the line-of-sight extinction from spectroscopic features. Stellar parameters were constrained using radial velocity, proper motions and stellar evolution models. SPICY 30021 is an optically obscured FUor with a total interstellar and circumstellar extinction of Av = 12.5 mag. Its spectrum closely resembles those of classical FUors. Multiple methods yield a distance of 1.7+_0.4 kpc. Its accretion luminosity is Lacc = 32 L_sol, moderate among FUors. Quiescent near-infrared photometry is consistent with a young 0.9 M_sol progenitor, although the mass depends on the adopted model and distance. We confirm SPICY 30021 as a bona fide FUor event. Its MIR precursor suggests an outside-in triggering mechanism.

Enigmatic emission structure around Mrk 783: cross-ionization of a companion in 100 kpc away

Mrk 783 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy that possesses a relatively large two-sided radio emission extending up to 14 kpc from the active nucleus possibly connected with a large-scale ionized gas emission. We obtained a deep [OIII] image that revealed an extended system of emission knots and diffuse ionized gas surrounding the main galaxy. The high-excited gas is related not only with the radio structure, but also with tidal features illuminated by the active nucleus radiation up to the projected distance 41 kpc as it follows from the emission lines intensities and kinematics derived from the long-slit spectroscopic data. Moreover the part of the disk of the companion galaxy SDSS J130257.20+162537.1 located at 99 kpc projected distances to the north of Mrk 783 also falls in the AGN ionizing cone. It is possible that Mrk 783 can be considered as `Hanny's Voorwerp precursor', i.e. a galaxy that demonstrates signs of sequential switching from radio-loud to radio-quiet nuclear activity, in the moment before falling of its ionization luminosity.

GM 2-4 - a signpost for low and intermediate mass star formation

We present a multi-wavelength study of the region towards the GM 2-4 nebula and the nearby source IRAS 05373+2340. Our near-infrared H2 1-0 S(1) line observations reveal various shock-excited features which are part of several bipolar outflows. We identify candidates for the driving sources of the outflows from a comparison of the multi-waveband archival data-sets and SED modelling. The SED spectral slope (α(IRAC)) for all the protostars in the field was then compared with the visual extinction map. This comparison suggests that star formation is progressing from NE to SW across this region.
