Fermionization of Bosons in a Flat Band

Strongly interacting bosons that live in a lattice with degeneracy in its lowest energy band experience frustration that can prevent the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Such systems form an ideal playground to investigate spin-liquid behavior. We use the variational principle and the Chern-Simons technique of fermionization of hard-core bosons on Kagome lattice to find that below lattice filling fraction $ν=1/3$ the system favors a topologically ordered chiral spin-liquid state that is gapped in bulk, spontaneously breaks Time-Reversal Symmetry, and supports massless chiral bosonic edge mode. We construct the many-body variational wave function of the state and show that the corresponding energy coincides with the energy of the flat band. This result proves that the ground state of the system cannot stabilize a Bose condensate below $ν=1/3$. The fermionization and variational scheme we outline apply to any non-Bravais lattice. We distinguish between the roles played by the Chern-Simons gauge field in lattices with a flat band and those exhibiting a moat-like dispersion (which is degenerate along a closed contour in the reciprocal space). We also suggest experimental probes to differentiate the proposed ground state from a condensate.

Superbosonization in disorder and chaos: The role of anomalies

Superbosonization formula aims at rigorously calculating fermionic integrals via employing supersymmetry. We derive such a supermatrix representation of superfield integrals and specify integration contours for the supermatrices. The derivation is essentially based on the supersymmetric generalization of the Itzikson-Zuber integral in the presence of anomalies in the Berezinian and shows how an integral over supervectors is eventually reduced to an integral over commuting variables. The approach is tested by calculating both one and two point correlation functions in a class of random matrix models. It is argued that the approach is capable of producing nonperturbative results in various systems with disorder, including physics of many-body localization, and other situations hosting localization phenomena.

Topological spin ordering via Chern-Simons superconductivity

We use the Chern-Simons (CS) fermion representation of s =1/2 spin operators to construct topological, long-range magnetically ordered states of interacting two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin models. We show that the fermion-fermion interactions mediated by the dynamic CS flux attachment may give rise to Cooper pairing of the fermions. Specifically, in an XY model on the honeycomb lattice, this construction leads to a "CS superconductor," which belongs to a topologically non-trivial in 2D symmetry class DIII, with particle-hole and time-reversal symmetries. It is shown that in the original spin language, this state corresponds to a symmetry protected topological state, which coexists with a magnetic long-range order. We discuss physical manifestations of the topological character of the corresponding state and requirements for models that could host it.

Statistical transmutation in Floquet driven optical lattices

We show that interacting bosons in a periodically-driven two dimensional (2D) optical lattice may effectively exhibit fermionic statistics. The phenomenon is similar to the celebrated Tonks-Girardeau regime in 1D. The Floquet band of a driven lattice develops the moat shape, i.e. a minimum along a closed contour in the Brillouin zone. Such degeneracy of the kinetic energy favors fermionic quasiparticles. The statistical transmutation is achieved by the Chern-Simons flux attachment similar to the fractional quantum Hall case. We show that the velocity distribution of the released bosons is a sensitive probe of the fermionic nature of their stationary Floquet state.

Spontaneous formation of a non-uniform chiral spin liquid in moat-band lattices

A number of lattices exhibit moat-like band structures, i.e. a band with infinitely degenerate energy minima attained along a closed line in the Brillouin zone. If such a lattice is populated with hard-core bosons, the degeneracy prevents their condensation. At half-filling, the system is equivalent to $s=1/2$ XY model at zero magnetic field, while absence of condensation translates into the absence of magnetic order in the XY plane. Here we show that the ground state breaks the time-reversal as well as inversion symmetries. This state, which may be identified with the chiral spin liquid, has a bulk gap and chiral gapless edge excitations. The applications of the developed analytical theory include an explanation of recent numerical findings and a suggestion for the chiral spin liquid realizations in experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices.

Absence of Bose condensation on lattices with moat bands

We study hard-core bosons on a class of frustrated lattices with the lowest Bloch band having a degenerate minimum along a closed contour, the moat, in the reciprocal space. We show that at small density the ground state of the system is given by a noncondensed state, which may be viewed as a state of fermions subject to Chern-Simons gauge field. At fixed density of bosons, such a state exhibits domains of incompressible liquids. Their fixed densities are given by fractions of the reciprocal-space area enclosed by the moat.

Composite fermion state of spin-orbit coupled bosons

We consider spinor Bose gas with the isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling in 2D. We argue that at low density its groundstate is a composite fermion state with a Chern-Simons gauge field and filling factor one. The chemical potential of such a state scales with the density as μ\propto n^{3/2}. This is a lower energy per particle than μ\propto n for the earlier suggested groundstate candidates: a condensate with broken time-reversal symmetry and a spin density wave state.

Majorana path integral for nonequilibrium dynamics of two-level systems

We present a new field-theoretic approach to anaylize non-equilirbium dynamics of two-level systems (TLS), which is based on a correspondence between a driven TLS and a Majorana fermion field theory coupled to bosonic fields. This approach allows us to calculate analytically properties of non-linear TLS dynamics with an arbitrary accuracy. We apply our method to analyze specific TLS dynamics under a monochromatic periodic drive that is relevant to the problem of decoherence in Josephson junction qubits. It is demonstrated that the method gives the precise positions of the resonance peaks in the non-linear dielectric response function that are in agreement with numerical simulations.

Boundary Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten Model from the Pairing Hamiltonian

Correlation functions of primary fields in the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) model are known to satisfy a system of Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations, which involve constants of motion of the exactly-solvable Gaudin magnet. We modify the KZ equations by replacing these Gaudin operators with constants of motion of the closely-related Richardson pairing Hamiltonian and reconstruct a deformed WZNW model, whose correlators satisfy these equations. This modified theory, dubbed here the boundary WZNW model, contains a term that breaks translational symmetry and therefore represents a generalized boundary operator. The corresponding correlators of the boundary WZNW model are calculated and are shown to acquire exponential prefactors, in contrast to the bulk WZNW theories. The solution also establishes a connection between correlation functions of the WZNW model and the spectrum of the reduced pairing Hamiltonian.

Pseudogap in underdoped cuprates and spin-density-wave fluctuations

We analyze fermionic spectral function in the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase of quasi-2D cuprates at small but finite T. We use a non-perturbative approach and sum up infinite series of thermal self-energy terms, keeping at each order nearly-divergent (T/J) |log epsilon| terms, where epsilon is a deviation from a pure two-dimensionality, and neglecting regular T/J corrections. We show that, as SDW order decreases, the spectral function in the antinodal region acquires peak/hump structure: the coherent peak position scales with SDW order parameter, while the incoherent hump remains roughly at the same scale as at T=0 when SDW order is the strongest. We identify the hump with the pseudogap observed in ARPES and argue that the presence of coherent excitations at low energies gives rise to magneto-oscillations in an applied field. We show that the same peak/hump structure appears in the density of states and in optical conductivity.

Fermionic propagators for 2D systems with singular interactions

We analyze the form of the fermionic propagator for 2D fermions interacting with massless overdamped bosons. Examples include a nematic and Ising ferromagnetic quantum-critical points, and fermions at a half-filled Landau level. Fermi liquid behavior in these systems is broken at criticality by a singular self-energy, but the Fermi surface remains well defined. These are strong-coupling problems with no expansion parameter other than the number of fermionic species, N. The two known limits, N >>1 and N=0 show qualitatively different behavior of the fermionic propagator G(ε_k, ω). In the first limit, G(ε_k, ω) has a pole at some ε_k, in the other it is analytic. We analyze the crossover between the two limits. We show that the pole survives for all N, but at small N it only exists in a range O(N^2) near the mass shell. At larger distances from the mass shell, the system evolves and G(ε_k, ω) becomes regular. At N=0, the range where the pole exists collapses and G(ε_k, ω) becomes regular everywhere.
