New physics searches for the LHC

Data taking at the LHC is the beginning of a new era in particle physics which will lead us towards understanding the completion of the Standard Model at and beyond the TeV scale. I discuss different approaches to new physics searches: driven by experimental anomalies, driven by model building, or driven by new analysis ideas. All of them have their place as long as we keep an open mind and see their opportunities as well as their limitations.

Jets plus Missing Energy with an Autofocus

Jets plus missing transverse energy is one of the main search channels for new physics at the LHC. A major limitation lies in our understanding of QCD backgrounds. Using jet merging we can describe the number of jets in typical background channels in terms of a staircase scaling, including theory uncertainties. The scaling parameter depends on the particles in the final state and on cuts applied. Measuring the staircase scaling will allow us to also predict the effective mass for Standard Model backgrounds. Based on both observables we propose an analysis strategy avoiding model specific cuts which returns information about the color charge and the mass scale of the underlying new physics.

Boosted Semileptonic Tops in Stop Decays

Top partner searches are one of the key aspects of new physics analyses at the LHC. We correct an earlier statement that supersymmetric top searches based on decays to semileptonic tops are not promising. Reconstructing the direction of the boosted leptonic top quark and correlating it with the measured missing transverse energy vector allows us to reduce the top pair background to an easily manageable level. In addition, reconstructing the full momentum of the leptonic top quark determines the stop mass based on an M_{T2} endpoint.

Asymptotic safety and Kaluza-Klein gravitons at the LHC

We study Drell-Yan production at the LHC in low-scale quantum gravity models with extra dimensions. Asymptotic safety implies that the ultra-violet behavior of gravity is dictated by a fixed point. We show how the energy dependence of Newton's coupling regularizes the gravitational amplitude using a renormalization group improvement. We study LHC predictions and find that Kaluza-Klein graviton signals are well above Standard Model backgrounds. This leaves a significant sensitivity to the energy scale Lambda_T where the gravitational couplings cross over from classical to fixed point scaling.

Charged Higgs production with a top in MC@NLO

The production in association with a top quark is the most promising search channel for charged Higgs bosons at the LHC. We review its theoretical description including next-to-leading order corrections and the combination with a parton shower. The latter allows us to for the first time answer questions about the kinematics of all jets in the process. We then describe the consistent subtraction of intermediate states and present new results about the bottom mass uncertainty impacting the parton densisities.

Measuring Unification

If supersymmetry is observed at the LHC its model parameters can be measured at the electroweak scale. We discuss the expected precision on the parameter determination, including a proper treatment of experimental and theoretical errors. Particular attention is paid to degenerate solutions. Using the SFitter framework we perform a bottom-up reconstruction of the unified parameters at the high scale, including a full error propagation.

Measuring Supersymmetry with Heavy Scalars

Supersymmetry with heavy scalars is a model where at the LHC we have to rely on rate measurements to determine the parameters of the underlying new physics. For this example we show how to properly combine rate measurements with kinematic endpoints, taking into account statistical, systematic and theory uncertainties. Provided we observe a sizeable number of events the LHC should be able to determine many model parameters with small enough error bars to for example test unification patterns.

Measuring Hidden Higgs and Strongly-Interacting Higgs Scenarios

Higgs couplings can be affected by physics beyond the Standard Model. We study modifications through interactions with a hidden sector and in specific composite Higgs models accessible at the LHC. Both scenarios give rise to congruent patterns of universal, or partially universal, shifts. In addition, Higgs decays to the hidden sector may lead to invisible decay modes which we also exploit. Experimental bounds on such potential modifications will measure the concordance of an observed Higgs boson with the Standard Model.

Physics searches at the LHC

With the LHC up and running, the focus of experimental and theoretical high energy physics will soon turn to an interpretation of LHC data in terms of the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and the TeV scale. We present here a broad review of models for new TeV-scale physics and their LHC signatures. In addition, we discuss possible new physics signatures and describe how they can be linked to specific models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, we illustrate how the LHC era could culminate in a detailed understanding of the underlying principles of TeV-scale physics.

Stop Reconstruction with Tagged Tops

At the LHC combinatorics make it unlikely that we will be able to observe stop pair production with a decay to a semi-leptonic top pair and missing energy for generic supersymmetric mass spectra. Using a Standard-Model top tagger on fully hadronic top decays we can not only extract the stop signal but also measure the top momentum. To illustrate the promise of tagging tops with moderate boost we include a detailed discussion of our HEPTopTagger algorithm.

Supersymmetric Higgs Production in Vector-Boson Fusion

We present a full calculation of the supersymmetric NLO corrections to Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion. The supersymmetric QCD corrections turn out to be significantly smaller than the electroweak ones. These higher-order corrections are an important ingredient to a precision analysis of the Higgs sector at the LHC.

Extra Dimensions and their Ultraviolet Completion

Large extra dimensions are one of the constructions addressing the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model. Their main theoretical and phenomenological challenge is that already predicting LHC effects requires an ultraviolet completion of TeV-scale gravity. In these lecture notes we first give a basic introduction into TeV-scale gravity models and their collider effects and then discuss possible ultraviolet completions, like string theory and fixed-point gravity.

Fat Jets for a Light Higgs

At the LHC associated top quark and Higgs boson production with a Higgs decay to bottom quarks has long been a heavily disputed search channel. Recently, it has been found to not be viable. We show how it can be observed by tagging massive Higgs and top jets. For this purpose we construct boosted top and Higgs taggers for Standard Model processes in a complex QCD environment.

Measuring the Higgs Sector

If we find a light Higgs boson at the LHC, there should be many observable channels which we can exploit to measure the relevant parameters in the Higgs sector. We use the SFitter framework to map these measurements on the parameter space of a general weak-scale effective theory with a light Higgs state of mass 120 GeV. Our analysis benefits from the parameter determination tools and the error treatment used in new--physics searches, to study individual parameters and their error bars as well as parameter correlations.

Understanding Single Tops using Jets

Top plus jets production at hadron collider allows us to study the couplings of the top quark. In the Standard Model, two single top processes contribute to the top-jets final state. Beyond the Standard Model, additional direct top production can occur. All three processes probe top gauge couplings including flavor mixing. The structure of accompanying QCD jets allows us to separate the direct top signal from the QCD backgrounds as well as to disentangle the three top plus jets production mechanisms orthogonally to the usual bottom tags.

Seeking Sgluons

Scalar gluons -- or sgluons -- are color octet scalars without electroweak charges. They occur in supersymmetric models of Dirac gauginos as the scalar partners of the gluino and carry Standard-Model type R charge. This allows them to interact with ordinary matter and to be produced at the LHC, singly as well as in pairs. Sgluons dominantly decay into gluons, top pairs, and a top quark plus a light quark. A pair of sgluons decaying into like-sign tops would provide a striking signature at the LHC. In our discussion of this channel we especially focus on the proper treatment of QCD jets.

LHC Phenomenology for Physics Hunters

Welcome to the 2008 TASI lectures on the exciting topic of `tools and technicalities' (original title). Technically, LHC physics is really all about perturbative QCD in signals or backgrounds. Whenever we look for interesting signatures at the LHC we get killed by QCD. Therefore, I will focus on QCD issues which arise for example in Higgs searches or exotics searches at the LHC, and ways to tackle them nowadays. In the last section you will find a few phenomenological discussions, for example on missing energy or helicity amplitudes.

Signatures of gravitational fixed points at the LHC

We study quantum-gravitational signatures at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the context of theories with extra spatial dimensions and a low fundamental Planck scale in the TeV range. Implications of a gravitational fixed point at high energies are worked out using Wilson's renormalisation group. We find that relevant cross-sections involving virtual gravitons become finite. Based on gravitational lepton pair production we conclude that the LHC is sensitive to a fundamental Planck scale of up to 6 TeV.
