Random matrix analysis of the QCD sign problem

The severity of the sign problem in lattice QCD at nonzero baryon density is measured by the average phase of the fermion determinant. Motivated by the equivalence of chiral random matrix theory and QCD to leading order in the epsilon regime, we compute the phase of the fermion determinant for general topology in random matrix theory as a function of the quark chemical potential and the quark mass. We find that the sign problem becomes milder with increasing topological charge. The analytic predictions are verified by detailed numerical random matrix simulations.

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory in the epsilon regime at next-to-leading order

We calculate the partition function of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory in the epsilon regime at next-to-leading order using the supersymmetry method in the formulation without a singlet particle. We include a nonzero imaginary chemical potential and show that the finite-volume corrections to the low-energy constants $Σ$ and $F$ for the partially quenched partition function, and hence for spectral correlation functions of the Dirac operator, are the same as for the unquenched partition function. We briefly comment on how to minimize these corrections in lattice simulations of QCD. As a side result, we show that the zero-momentum integral in the formulation without a singlet particle agrees with previous results from random matrix theory.

Krylov subspace methods and the sign function: multishifts and deflation in the non-Hermitian case

Rational approximations of the matrix sign function lead to multishift methods. For non-Hermitian matrices long recurrences can cause storage problems, which can be circumvented with restarts. Together with deflation we obtain efficient iterative methods, as we show in numerical experiments for the overlap Dirac operator at non-vanishing quark chemical potential for lattices up to size 10^4.

Chiral Lagrangian and spectral sum rules for two-color QCD at high density

We report on our analytical study of two-color QCD with an even number of flavors at high baryon density. Based on the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking induced by BCS-type diquark pairing we construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We also identify a new epsilon-regime at high baryon density and derive Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules for the complex eigenvalues of the Dirac operator in terms of the fermion gap. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice QCD simulations.

Chiral Lagrangian and spectral sum rules for dense two-color QCD

We analytically study two-color QCD with an even number of flavors at high baryon density. This theory is free from the fermion sign problem. Chiral symmetry is broken spontaneously by the diquark condensate. Based on the symmetry breaking pattern we construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We identify a new epsilon-regime at high baryon density in which the quark mass dependence of the partition function can be determined exactly. We also derive Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules for the complex eigenvalues of the Dirac operator in terms of the fermion gap. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice QCD simulations.

Eigenvalue density of Wilson loops in 2D SU(N) YM

In 1981 Durhuus and Olesen (DO) showed that at infinite N the eigenvalue density of a Wilson loop matrix W associated with a simple loop in two-dimensional Euclidean SU(N) Yang-Mills theory undergoes a phase transition at a critical size. The averages of det(z-W), 1/det(z-W), and det(1+uW)/(1-vW) at finite N lead to three different smoothed out expressions, all tending to the DO singular result at infinite N. These smooth extensions are obtained and compared to each other.

Random matrix analysis of the QCD sign problem for general topology

Motivated by the important role played by the phase of the fermion determinant in the investigation of the sign problem in lattice QCD at nonzero baryon density, we derive an analytical formula for the average phase factor of the fermion determinant for general topology in the microscopic limit of chiral random matrix theory at nonzero chemical potential, for both the quenched and the unquenched case. The formula is a nontrivial extension of the expression for zero topology derived earlier by Splittorff and Verbaarschot. Our analytical predictions are verified by detailed numerical random matrix simulations of the quenched theory.

Comparing iterative methods to compute the overlap Dirac operator at nonzero chemical potential

The overlap Dirac operator at nonzero quark chemical potential involves the computation of the sign function of a non-Hermitian matrix. In this talk we present iterative Krylov subspace approximations, with deflation of critical eigenvalues, which we developed to compute the operator on large lattices. We compare the accuracy and efficiency of two alternative approximations based on the Arnoldi and on the two-sided Lanczos method. The short recurrences used in the latter method make it faster and more effective for realistic lattice simulations.

Possible large-N transitions for complex Wilson loop matrices

It is shown that a very simple multiplicative random complex matrix model generalizes the large-N phase structure found in the unitary case: A perturbative regime is joined to a non-perturbative regime at a point where the smoothness of some quantities breaks down. A generic complex Wilson loop matrix in a field theory admitting a 't Hooft planar limit could display a phase transition in that limit as nonlinear effects become dominating over linear ones.

Polyakov loops and spectral properties of the staggered Dirac operator

We study the spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator in SU(2) gauge fields close to the free limit, for both the fundamental and the adjoint representation. Numerically we find a characteristic cluster structure with spacings of adjacent levels separating into three scales. We derive an analytical formula which explains the emergence of these different spectral scales. The behavior on the two coarser scales is determined by the lattice geometry and the Polyakov loops, respectively. Furthermore, we analyze the spectral statistics on all three scales, comparing to predictions from random matrix theory.

Polyakov loops and SU(2) staggered Dirac spectra

We consider the spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator with SU(2) gauge fields. Our study is motivated by the fact that the antiunitary symmetries of this operator are different from those of the SU(2) continuum Dirac operator. In this contribution, we investigate in some detail staggered eigenvalue spectra close to the free limit. Numerical experiments in the quenched approximation and at very large $β$-values show that the eigenvalues occur in clusters consisting of eight eigenvalues each. We can predict the locations of these clusters for a given configuration very accurately by an analytical formula involving Polyakov loops and boundary conditions. The spacing distribution of the eigenvalues within the clusters agrees with the chiral symplectic ensemble of random matrix theory, in agreement with theoretical expectations, whereas the spacing distribution between the clusters tends towards Poisson behavior.

Distributions of individual Dirac eigenvalues for QCD at non-zero chemical potential: RMT predictions and lattice results

For QCD at non-zero chemical potential $μ$, the Dirac eigenvalues are scattered in the complex plane. We define a notion of ordering for individual eigenvalues in this case and derive the distributions of individual eigenvalues from random matrix theory (RMT). We distinguish two cases depending on the parameter $α=μ^2 F^2 V$, where $V$ is the volume and $F$ is the familiar low-energy constant of chiral perturbation theory. For small $α$, we use a Fredholm determinant expansion and observe that already the first few terms give an excellent approximation. For large $α$, all spectral correlations are rotationally invariant, and exact results can be derived. We compare the RMT predictions to lattice data and in both cases find excellent agreement in the topological sectors $ν=0,1,2$.

An iterative method to compute the overlap Dirac operator at nonzero chemical potential

The overlap Dirac operator at nonzero quark chemical potential involves the computation of the sign function of a non-Hermitian matrix. In this talk we present an iterative method, first proposed by us in Ref. [1], which allows for an efficient computation of the operator, even on large lattices. The starting point is a Krylov subspace approximation, based on the Arnoldi algorithm, for the evaluation of a generic matrix function. The efficiency of this method is spoiled when the matrix has eigenvalues close to a function discontinuity. To cure this, a small number of critical eigenvectors are added to the Krylov subspace, and two different deflation schemes are proposed in this augmented subspace. The ensuing method is then applied to the sign function of the overlap Dirac operator, for two different lattice sizes. The sign function has a discontinuity along the imaginary axis, and the numerical results show how deflation dramatically improves the efficiency of the method.

Domain-wall and overlap fermions at nonzero quark chemical potential

We have recently given a construction of the overlap Dirac operator at nonzero quark chemical potential. Here, we introduce a quark chemical potential in the domain-wall fermion formalism and show that our earlier result is reproduced if the extent of the fifth dimension is taken to infinity and its lattice spacing is taken to zero. We also extend this result to include a bare quark mass, consider its continuum limit, and prove a number of properties of the overlap operator at nonzero quark chemical potential. In particular, we show that the relation between the anomaly and the index of the overlap operator remains valid.
