Square-free values of random polynomials

The question of whether or not a given integral polynomial takes infinitely many square-free values has only been addressed unconditionally for polynomials of degree at most 3. We address this question, on average, for polynomials of arbitrary degree.

Generalised quadratic forms over totally real number fields

We introduce a new class of generalised quadratic forms over totally real number fields, which is rich enough to capture the arithmetic of arbitrary systems of quadrics over the rational numbers. We explore this connection through a version of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method over number fields.

Density of rational points on some quadric bundle threefolds

We prove the Manin-Peyre conjecture for the number of rational points of bounded height outside of a thin subset on a family of Fano threefolds of bidegree (1,2). The proof uses a mixture of the circle method and techniques from the geometry of numbers.

Free rational curves on low degree hypersurfaces and the circle method

We use a function field version of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to study the locus of free rational curves on an arbitrary smooth projective hypersurface of sufficiently low degree. On the one hand this allows us to bound the dimension of the singular locus of the moduli space of rational curves on such hypersurfaces and, on the other hand, it sheds light on Peyre's reformulation of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture in terms of slopes with respect to the tangent bundle.

Equidistribution and freeness on Grassmannians

We associate a certain tensor product lattice to any primitive integer lattice and ask about its typical shape. These lattices are related to the tangent bundle of Grassmannians and their study is motivated by Peyre's programme on "freeness" for rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties.

The Hasse principle for random Fano hypersurfaces

It is known that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is vacuous for smooth Fano hypersurfaces of dimension at least $3$ over any number field. Moreover, for such varieties it follows from a general conjecture of Colliot-Thélène that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle should be the only one, so that the Hasse principle is expected to hold. Working over the field of rational numbers and ordering Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension by height, we prove that almost every such hypersurface satisfies the Hasse principle provided that the dimension is at least $3$. This proves a conjecture of Poonen and Voloch in every case except for cubic surfaces.

The geometric sieve for quadrics

We develop a version of Ekedahl's geometric sieve for integral quadratic forms of rank at least five. As one ranges over the zeros of such quadratic forms, we use the sieve to compute the density of coprime values of polynomials, and furthermore, to address a question about local solubility in families of varieties parameterised by the zeros.

A geometric version of the circle method

We develop a geometric version of the circle method and use it to compute the compactly supported cohomology of the space of rational curves through a point on a smooth affine hypersurface of sufficiently low degree.

Free rational points on smooth hypersurfaces

Motivated by a recent question of Peyre, we apply the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to count "sufficiently free" rational points of bounded height on arbitrary smooth projective hypersurfaces of low degree that are defined over the rational numbers.

Arithmetic of higher-dimensional orbifolds and a mixed Waring problem

We study the density of rational points on a higher-dimensional orbifold $(\mathbb{P}^{n-1},D)$ when $D$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor involving hyperplanes. This allows us to address a question of Tanimoto about whether the set of rational points on such an orbifold constitutes a thin set. Our approach relies on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to first study an asymptotic version of Waring's problem for mixed powers. In doing so we make crucial use of the recent resolution of the main conjecture in Vinogradov's mean value theorem, due to Bourgain-Demeter-Guth and Wooley.

Sieving rational points on varieties

A sieve for rational points on suitable varieties is developed, together with applications to counting rational points in thin sets, the number of varieties in a family which are everywhere locally soluble, and to the notion of friable rational points with respect to divisors. In the special case of quadrics, sharper estimates are obtained by developing a version of the Selberg sieve for rational points.

Square-free values of reducible polynomials

We calculate admissible values of r such that a square-free polynomial with integer coefficients, no fixed prime divisor and irreducible factors of degree at most 3 takes infinitely many values that are a product of at most r distinct primes.

Norm forms for arbitrary number fields as products of linear polynomials

Let K/Q be a field extension of finite degree and let P(t) be a polynomial over Q that splits into linear factors over Q. We show that any smooth model of the affine variety defined by the equation N_{K/Q} (k) = P(t) satisfies the Hasse principle and weak approximation whenever the Brauer-Manin obstruction is empty. Our proof is based on a combination of methods from additive combinatorics due to Green-Tao and Green-Tao-Ziegler, together with an application of the descent theory of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc.
