Phase-Field Methods for Spectral Shape and Topology Optimization

We optimize a selection of eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions by adjusting the shape of the domain on which the eigenvalue problem is considered. Here, a phase-field function is used to represent the shapes over which we minimize. The idea behind this method is to modify the Laplace operator by introducing phase-field dependent coefficients in order to extend the eigenvalue problem on a fixed design domain containing all admissible shapes. The resulting shape and topology optimization problem can then be formulated as an optimal control problem with PDE constraints in which the phase-field function acts as the control. For this optimal control problem, we establish first-order necessary optimality conditions and we rigorously derive its sharp interface limit. Eventually, we present and discuss several numerical simulations for our optimization problem.

Diffuse-interface approximation and weak-strong uniqueness of anisotropic mean curvature flow

The purpose of this paper is to derive anisotropic mean curvature flow as the limit of the anisotropic Allen-Cahn equation. We rely on distributional solution concepts for both the diffuse and sharp interface models, and prove convergence using relative entropy methods, which have recently proven to be a powerful tool in interface evolution problems. With the same relative entropy, we prove a weak-strong uniqueness result, which relies on the construction of gradient flow calibrations for our anisotropic energy functionals.

Large data limit of the MBO scheme for data clustering: convergence of the dynamics

We prove that the dynamics of the MBO scheme for data clustering converge to a viscosity solution to mean curvature flow. The main ingredients are (i) a new abstract convergence result based on quantitative estimates for heat operators and (ii) the derivation of these estimates in the setting of random geometric graphs. To implement the scheme in practice, two important parameters are the number of eigenvalues for computing the heat operator and the step size of the scheme. The results of the current paper give a theoretical justification for the choice of these parameters in relation to sample size and interaction width.

Weak-strong uniqueness for volume-preserving mean curvature flow

In this note, we derive a stability and weak-strong uniqueness principle for volume-preserving mean curvature flow. The proof is based on a new notion of volume-preserving gradient flow calibrations, which is a natural extension of the concept in the case without volume preservation recently introduced by Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478]. The first main result shows that any strong solution with certain regularity is calibrated. The second main result consists of a stability estimate in terms of a relative entropy, which is valid in the class of distributional solutions to volume-preserving mean curvature flow.

Sharp Interface Limit of the Cahn-Hilliard Reaction Model for Lithium-ion Batteries

We propose a weak solution theory for the sharp interface limit of the Cahn-Hilliard reaction model, a variational PDE for lithium-ion batteries. An essential feature of this model is the use of Butler-Volmer kinetics for lithium-ion insertion, which arises as a Robin-type boundary condition relating the flux of the chemical potential to the reaction rate, itself a nonlinear function of the chemical potential and the ion concentration. To pass through the nonlinearity as interface width vanishes, we introduce solution concepts at the diffuse and sharp interface level describing dynamics principally in terms of an optimal dissipation inequality. Using this functional framework and under an energy convergence hypothesis, we show that solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard reaction model converge to a Mullins-Sekerka type geometric evolution equation.

Large data limit of the MBO scheme for data clustering: $Γ$-convergence of the thresholding energies

In this work we begin to rigorously analyze the MBO scheme for data clustering in the large data limit. Each iteration of the MBO scheme corresponds to one step of implicit gradient descent for the thresholding energy on the similarity graph of some dataset. For a subset of the nodes of the graph, the thresholding energy at time $h$ is the amount of heat transferred from the subset to its complement at time $h$, rescaled by a factor $\sqrt{h}$. It is then natural to think that outcomes of the MBO scheme are (local) minimizers of this energy. We prove that the algorithm is consistent, in the sense that these (local) minimizers converge to minimizers of a suitably weighted optimal partition problem.

Strong convergence of the thresholding scheme for the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets

In this work, we analyze Merriman, Bence and Osher's thresholding scheme, a time discretization for mean curvature flow. We restrict to the two-phase setting and mean convex initial conditions. In the sense of the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoglu and Otto we show the time-integrated energy of the approximation to converge to the time-integrated energy of the limit. As a corollary, the conditional convergence results of Otto and one of the authors become unconditional in the two-phase mean convex case. Our results are general enough to handle the extension of the scheme to anisotropic flows for which a non-negative kernel can be chosen.

The Hele-Shaw flow as the sharp interface limit of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with disparate mobilities

In this paper, we study the sharp interface limit for solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with disparate mobilities. This means that the mobility function degenerates in one of the two energetically favorable configurations, suppressing the diffusion in that phase. First, we construct suitable weak solutions to this Cahn-Hilliard equation. Second, we prove precompactness of these solutions under natural assumptions on the initial data. Third, under an additional energy convergence assumption, we show that the sharp interface limit is a distributional solution to the Hele-Shaw flow with optimal energy-dissipation rate.

BV solutions for mean curvature flow with constant contact angle: Allen-Cahn approximation and weak-strong uniqueness

We study weak solutions to mean curvature flow satisfying Young's angle condition for general contact angles $α\in (0,π)$. First, we construct BV solutions using the Allen-Cahn approximation with boundary contact energy as proposed by Owen and Sternberg. Second, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness and stability for this solution concept. The main ingredient for both results is a relative energy, which can also be interpreted as a tilt excess.

The local structure of the energy landscape in multiphase mean curvature flow: Weak-strong uniqueness and stability of evolutions

We prove that in the absence of topological changes, the notion of BV solutions to planar multiphase mean curvature flow does not allow for a mechanism for (unphysical) non-uniqueness. Our approach is based on the local structure of the energy landscape near a classical evolution by mean curvature. Mean curvature flow being the gradient flow of the surface energy functional, we develop a gradient-flow analogue of the notion of calibrations. Just like the existence of a calibration guarantees that one has reached a global minimum in the energy landscape, the existence of a "gradient flow calibration" ensures that the route of steepest descent in the energy landscape is unique and stable.

Weak-strong uniqueness for the mean curvature flow of double bubbles

We derive a weak-strong uniqueness principle for BV solutions to multiphase mean curvature flow of triple line clusters in three dimensions. Our proof is based on the explicit construction of a gradient-flow calibration in the sense of the recent work of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478v2] for any such cluster. This extends the two-dimensional construction to the three-dimensional case of surfaces meeting along triple junctions.

A new varifold solution concept for mean curvature flow: Convergence of the Allen-Cahn equation and weak-strong uniqueness

We propose a new weak solution concept for (two-phase) mean curvature flow which enjoys both (unconditional) existence and (weak-strong) uniqueness properties. These solutions are evolving varifolds, just as in Brakke's formulation, but are coupled to the phase volumes by a simple transport equation. First, we show that, in the exact same setup as in Ilmanen's proof [J. Differential Geom. 38, 417-461, (1993)], any limit point of solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation is a varifold solution in our sense. Second, we prove that any calibrated flow in the sense of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478] - and hence any classical solution to mean curvature flow - is unique in the class of our new varifold solutions. This is in sharp contrast to the case of Brakke flows, which a priori may disappear at any given time and are therefore fatally non-unique. Finally, we propose an extension of the solution concept to the multi-phase case which is at least guaranteed to satisfy a weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Distributional solutions to mean curvature flow

These lecture notes aim to present some of the ideas behind the recent (conditional) existence and (weak-strong) uniqueness theory for mean curvature flow. Focusing on the simplest case of the evolution of a single closed hypersurface allows for a self-contained and concise presentation, which is accessible for beginning graduate students with some background in PDEs and only requires basic measure theory.

Nematic-Isotropic phase transition in Liquid crystals: a variational derivation of effective geometric motions

In this work, we study the nematic-isotropic phase transition based on the dynamics of the Landau--De Gennes theory of liquid crystals. At the critical temperature, the Landau--De Gennes bulk potential favors the isotropic phase and nematic phase equally. When the elastic coefficient is much smaller than that of the bulk potential, a scaling limit can be derived by formal asymptotic expansions: the solution gradient concentrates on a closed surface evolving by mean curvature flow. Moreover, on one side of the surface the solution tends to the nematic phase which is governed by the harmonic map heat flow into the sphere while on the other side, it tends to the isotropic phase. To rigorously justify such a scaling limit, we prove a convergence result by combining weak convergence methods and the modulated energy method. Our proof applies as long as the limiting mean curvature flow remains smooth.

De Giorgi's inequality for the thresholding scheme with arbitrary mobilities and surface tensions

We provide a new convergence proof of the celebrated Merriman-Bence-Osher scheme for multiphase mean curvature flow. Our proof applies to the new variant incorporating a general class of surface tensions and mobilities, including typical choices for modeling grain growth. The basis of the proof are the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedoğlu and Otto and De Giorgi's general theory of gradient flows. Under a typical energy convergence assumption we show that the limit satisfies a sharp energy-dissipation relation.

Mullins-Sekerka as the Wasserstein flow of the perimeter

We prove the convergence of an implicit time discretization for the one-phase Mullins-Sekerka equation, possibly with additional non-local repulsion, proposed in [F. Otto, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 141 (1998) 63--103]. Our simple argument shows that the limit satisfies the equation in a distributional sense as well as an optimal energy-dissipation relation. The proof combines arguments from optimal transport, gradient flows & minimizing movements, and basic geometric measure theory.

Convergence rates of the Allen-Cahn equation to mean curvature flow: A short proof based on relative entropies

We give a short and self-contained proof for rates of convergence of the Allen-Cahn equation towards mean curvature flow, assuming that a classical (smooth) solution to the latter exists and starting from well-prepared initial data. Our approach is based on a relative entropy technique. In particular, it does not require a stability analysis for the linearized Allen-Cahn operator. As our analysis also does not rely on the comparison principle, we expect it to be applicable to more complex equations and systems.

The thresholding scheme for mean curvature flow and de Giorgi's ideas for minimizing movements

We consider the thresholding scheme and explore its connection to De Giorgi's ideas on gradient flows in metric spaces; here applied to mean curvature flow as the steepest descent of the interfacial area. The basis of our analysis is the observation by Esedoglu and the second author that thresholding can be interpreted as a minimizing movements scheme for an energy that approximates the interfacial area. De Giorgi's framework provides an optimal energy dissipation relation for the scheme in which we pass to the limit to derive a dissipation-based weak formulation of mean curvature flow. Although applicable in the general setting of arbitrary networks, here we restrict ourselves to the case of a single interface, which allows for a compact, self-contained presentation.
