Rapid stellar and binary population synthesis with COMPAS

Compact Object Mergers: Population Astrophysics and Statistics (COMPAS; https://compas.science) is a public rapid binary population synthesis code. COMPAS generates populations of isolated stellar binaries under a set of parametrized assumptions in order to allow comparisons against observational data sets, such as those coming from gravitational-wave observations of merging compact remnants. It includes a number of tools for population processing in addition to the core binary evolution components. COMPAS is publicly available via the github repository https://github.com/TeamCOMPAS/COMPAS/, and is designed to allow for flexible modifications as evolutionary models improve. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of COMPAS. It is a living document which will be updated as new features are added to COMPAS; the current document describes COMPAS v02.21.00.

The Dehn function of Baumslag's Metabelian Group

Baumslag's group is a finitely presented metabelian group with a Z \wr Z subgroup. There is an analogue with an additional torsion relation in which this subgroup becomes C_m \wr Z. We prove that Baumslag's group has an exponential Dehn function. This contrasts with the torsion analogues which have quadratic Dehn functions. v.2: version for publication, incorporating referee's suggestions.

Hydra groups

We give examples of CAT(0), biautomatic, free-by-cyclic, one-relator groups which have finite-rank free subgroups of huge (Ackermannian) distortion. This leads to elementary examples of groups whose Dehn functions are similarly extravagant. This behaviour originates in manifestations of Hercules-versus-the-hydra battles in string-rewriting.

The Dehn function of Stallings' group

We prove that the Dehn function of a group of Stallings that is finitely presented but not of type F_3 is quadratic. To appear in Geometric and Functional Analysis.
