On canonical modules of toric face rings

Generalizing the concepts of Stanley-Reisner and affine monoid algebras, one can associate to a rational pointed fan the toric face ring. Assuming that this ring is Cohen-Macaulay, the main result of this paper is to characterize the situation when its canonical module is isomorphic to a fine graded ideal of the toric face ring. From this result several algebraic and combinatorial consequences are deduced in the situations where the fan may be related to a manifold with non-empty boundary, or the fan is a shellable fan.

On toric face rings

Following a construction of Stanley we consider toric face rings associated to rational pointed fans. This class of rings is a common generalization of the concepts of Stanley--Reisner and affine monoid algebras. The main goal of this article is to unify parts of the theories of Stanley--Reisner- and affine monoid algebras. We consider (non-pure) shellable fan's and the Cohen--Macaulay property. Moreover, we study the local cohomology, the canonical module and the Gorenstein property of a toric face ring.

Cohomology of partially ordered sets and local cohomology of section rings

We study local cohomology of rings of global sections of sheafs on the Alexandrov space of a partially ordered set. We give a criterion for a splitting of the local cohomology groups into summands determined by the cohomology of the poset and the local cohomology of the stalks. The face ring of a rational pointed fan can be considered as the ring of global sections of a flasque sheaf on the face poset of the fan. Thus we obtain a decomposition of the local cohomology of such face rings. Since the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex is the face ring of a rational pointed fan, our main result can be interpreted as a generalization of Hochster's decomposition of local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings.

h-vectors of Gorenstein polytopes

We show that the Ehrhart h-vector of an integer Gorenstein polytope with a regular unimodular triangulation satisfies McMullen's g-theorem; in particular, it is unimodal. This result generalizes a recent theorem of Athanasiadis (conjectured by Stanley) for compressed polytopes. It is derived from a more general theorem on Gorenstein affine normal monoids M: one can factor K[M] (K a field) by a "long" regular sequence in such a way that the quotient is still a normal affine monoid algebra. This technique reduces all questions about the Ehrhart h-vector of P to the Ehrhart h-vector of a Gorenstein polytope Q with exactly one interior lattice point, provided each lattice point in a multiple cP, c in N, can be written as the sum of n lattice points in P. (Up to a translation, the polytope Q belongs to the class of reflexive polytopes considered in connection with mirror symmetry.) If P has a regular unimodular triangulation, then it follows readily that the Ehrhart h-vector of P coincides with the combinatorial h-vector of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope, and the g-theorem applies.

On algebras associated to partially ordered sets

We continue the study on sheaves of rings on finite posets. We present examples where the ring of global sections coincide with toric faces rings, quotients of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal and algebras with straightening laws. We prove a rank-selection theorem which generalizes the well-known rank-selection theorem of Stanley-Reisner rings. Finally, we determine an explicit presentation of certain global rings of sections.

On seminormal monoid rings

Given a seminormal affine monoid M we consider several monoid properties of M and their connections to ring properties of the associated affine monoid ring K[M] over a field K. We characterize when K[M] satisfies Serre's condition (S_2) and analyze the local cohomology of K[M]. As an application we present criteria which imply that K[M] is Cohen--Macaulay and we give lower bounds for the depth of K[M]. Finally, the seminormality of an arbitrary affine monoid M is studied with characteristic p methods.

Extensions of the Multiplicity Conjecture

The Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan states an upper bound for the multiplicity of any graded $k$-algebra as well as a lower bound for Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In this note we extend this conjecture in several directions. We discuss when these bounds are sharp, find a sharp lower bound in case of not necessarily arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay one-dimensional schemes of 3-space, and we propose an upper bound for finitely generated graded torsion modules. We establish this bound for torsion modules whose codimension is at most two.

Betti numbers of Z^n-graded modules

Let S=K[X_1,...,X_n] be the polynomial ring over a field K. For bounded below Z^n-graded S-modules M and N we show that if Tor^S_p(M,N) is nonzero, then for every i between 0 and p, the dimension of the K-vector space Tor^S_i(M,N) is at least as big as the binomial coefficient (p,i). In particular, we get lower bounds for the total Betti numbers. These results are related to a conjecture of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud.

Subdivisions of toric complexes

We introduce toric complexes as polyhedral complexes consisting of rational cones together with a set of integral generators for each cone, and we define their associated face rings. Abstract simplicial complexes and rational fans can be considered as toric complexes, and the face ring for toric complexes extend Stanley and Reisner's face ring for abstract simplicial complexes and Stanley's face ring for rational fans. Given a toric complex with defining ideal I for the face ring we give a geometrical interpretation of the initial ideals of I with respect to weight orders in terms of subdivisions of the toric complex generalizing a theorem of Sturmfels. We apply our results to study edgewise subdivisions of abstract simplicial complexes.

Note on bounds for multiplicities

Let S=K[x_1,...,x_n] be a polynomial ring and R=S/I be a graded K-algebra where I is a graded ideal in S. Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan have conjectured that the multiplicity of R is bounded above by a function of the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R over S. We prove the conjecture in the case that codim(R)=2 which generalizes results in of Herzog, Srinivasan and Gold. We also give a proof for the bound in the case in which I is componentwise linear. For example, stable and squarefree stable ideals belong to this class of ideals.

Extended degree functions and monomial modules

The arithmetic degree, the smallest extended degree, and the homological degree are invariants that have been proposed as alternatives of the degree of a module if this module is not Cohen-Macaulay. We compare these degree functions and study their behavior when passing to the generic initial or the lexicographic submodule. This leads to various bounds and to counterexamples to a conjecture of Gunston and Vasconcelos, respectively. Particular attention is given to the class of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules. The results in this case lead to an algorithm that computes the smallest extended degree.

Initial algebras of determinantal rings, Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals

We study initial algebras of determinantal rings, defined by minors of generic matrices, with respect to their classical generic point. This approach leads to very short proofs for the structural properties of determinantal rings. Moreover, it allows us to classify their Cohen-Macaulay and Ulrich ideals.

Homological properties of bigraded algebras

We study the x- and y-regularity of a bigraded K-algebra R. These notions are used to study asymptotic properties of certain finitely generated bigraded modules. As an application we get for any equigenerated graded ideal I upper bounds for the number j_0 for which reg(I^j) is a linear function for j >= j_0. Finally we give upper bounds for the x- and y-regularity of generalized Veronese algebras.

Bounds for Betti numbers

In this paper we prove parts of a conjecture of Herzog giving lower bounds on the rank of the free modules appearing in the linear strand of a graded $k$-th syzygy module over the polynomial ring. If in addition the module is $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded we show that the conjecture holds in full generality. Furthermore, we give lower and upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of graded ideals with a linear resolution and a fixed number of generators.
