A refined Malle conjecture for Heisenberg groups

Based on a conjecture of Loughran and the second author, we give an explicit prediction for the leading constant in Malle's conjecture for Galois $\mathcal{H}$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by discriminant, where $\mathcal{H}$ is the $3\times 3$ Heisenberg group over $\mathbb{F}_4$. The predicted leading constant is not a single Euler product, but rather a sum of two distinct Euler products. Our methods also give an efficient algorithm for computing the conjectural Loughran-Santens leading constant for many $2$-groups of nilpotency class $2$.

The leading constant in Malle's conjecture

We give an overview of a recent conjecture of the authors on the leading constant in Malle's conjecture on number fields of bounded discriminant. This comes from applying the philosophy from Manin's conjecture on rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties to classifying stacks. To make these ideas more accessible we assume no background in algebraic geometry, which requires some new perspectives and alternative approaches to the theory. We also give some new conjectures on multi-heights and Bhargava's heuristics on counting with local conditions imposed.

The leading constant in Malle's conjecture over function fields

We prove the analogue of Malle's conjecture for the global function field $\F_q(t)$ with $q$ sufficiently large, including a precise formula for the leading constant. The main ingredients are the recent breakthrough of Landesman--Levy on the stable homology of Hurwitz spaces, a novel interpretation of the Frobenius fixed components of Hurwitz spaces in terms of the Brauer group of the stack $BG$ and an interpretation of the number of $\F_q$ points of configuration spaces as a certain Tamagawa volume.

Serre's question on thin sets in projective space

We answer a question of Serre from the 1980s on rational points of bounded height on projective thin sets, in degree at least $4$. For degrees $2$ and $3$ we improve the known bounds in general. The focus is on thin sets of type II, namely corresponding to the images of ramified dominant quasi-finite covers of projective space, as thin sets of type I are already well understood via dimension growth results by the third author in 2002 (published in 2023) by a global variant of Heath-Brown's $p$-adic determinant method. For type II, we obtain a uniform affine variant of Serre's question which implies the projective case and for which the implicit constant is furthermore polynomial in the degree. We are able to avoid logarithmic factors when the degree is at least $5$ and we prove our results over any global field, of any characteristic. A key ingredient for obtaining the affine variant comes from Binyamini-Cluckers-Novikov (2024) and Binyamini-Cluckers-Kato (2025) where a question of the third author was answered by providing bounds, for rational points on irreducible curves, which are quadratic in the degree. A second key ingredient is an adaptation of Salberger's global determinant method to the case of weighted polynomials. The third key ingredient is the design of our affine variant of Serre's question, for weighted polynomials which are not necessarily weighted homogeneous.

Local solubility of generalised Fermat equations

For every $n \geq 2$ we determine the asymptotic formula for the number of integer triples $(a,b,c)$ of bounded absolute value such that the generalised Fermat equation given by $ax^n+by^n+cz^n=0$ is everywhere locally soluble. We compute the leading constant, answering a question of Loughran--Rome--Sofos, and determine that the conjectures of Loughran--Smeets and Loughran--Rome--Sofos hold for such equations.

Malle's conjecture and Brauer groups of stacks

We put forward a conjecture for the leading constant in Malle's conjecture on number fields of bounded discriminant, guided by stacky versions of conjectures of Batyrev-Manin, Batyrev-Tschinkel, and Peyre on rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. A new framework for Brauer groups of stacks plays a key role in our conjecture, and we define a new notion of the unramified Brauer group of an algebraic stack.

Manin's conjecture for integral points on toric varieties

We formulate a conjecture on the number of integral points of bounded height on log Fano varieties in analogy with Manin's conjecture on the number of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. We also give a prediction for the leading constant which is similar to Peyre's interpretation of the leading constant in Manin's conjecture. We give evidence for our conjecture by proving it for toric varieties. The proof is based on harmonic analysis on universal torsors.

The Brauer-Manin obstruction for stacky curves

We show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to strong approximation for all stacky curves over global fields with finite abelian fundamental groups. This includes all stacky curves of genus $g = \frac{1}{2}$, thus explaining a recent counterexample to the Hasse principle of Bhargava-Poonen. We will furthermore show that the elementary obstruction is the only obstruction to the integral Hasse principle for smooth proper integral models of stacky curves of genus $g < 1$. We then compute the Brauer-Manin obstruction for smooth proper integral models of stacky curves of genus $\frac{1}{2}$.

Diagonal quartic surfaces with a Brauer-Manin obstruction

In this paper we investigate the quantity of diagonal quartic surfaces $a_0 X_0^4 + a_1 X_1^4 + a_2 X_2^4 +a_3 X_3^4 = 0$ which have a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. We are able to find an asymptotic formula for the quantity of such surfaces ordered by height. The proof uses a generalization of a method of Heath-Brown on sums over linked variables. We also show that there exists no uniform formula for a generic generator in this family.

Integral points on affine quadric surfaces

It is well-known that the Hasse principle holds for quadric hypersurfaces. The Hasse principle fails for integral points on smooth quadric hypersurfaces of dimension 2 but the failure can be completely explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We investigate how often the family of quadric hypersurfaces $ax^2 + by^2 +cz^2 = n$ has a Brauer-Manin obstruction. We improve previous bounds of Mitankin.
