Cosmological Einstein-Skyrme solutions with non-vanishing topological charge

Time-dependent analytic solutions of the Einstein-Skyrme system --gravitating Skyrmions--, with topological charge one are analyzed in detail. In particular, the question of whether these Skyrmions reach a spherically symmetric configuration for $t\rightarrow+\infty$ is discussed. It is shown that there is a static, spherically symmetric solution described by the Ermakov-Pinney system, which is fully integrable by algebraic methods. For $\Lambda>0$ this spherically symmetric solution is found to be in a "neutral equilibrium" under small deformations, in the sense that under a small squashing it would neither blow up nor dissapear after a long time, but it would remain finite forever (plastic deformation). Thus, in a sense, the coupling with Einstein gravity spontaneously breaks the spherical symmetry of the solution. However, in spite of the lack of isotropy, for $t \to\infty$ (and $\Lambda>0$) the space time is locally flat and the anisotropy of the Skyrmion only reflects the squashing of spacetime.

New 2D dilaton gravity for nonsingular black holes

We construct a two-dimensional action that is an extension of spherically symmetric Einstein-Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The action contains arbitrary functions of the areal radius and the norm squared of its gradient, but the field equations are second order and obey Birkhoff's theorem. In complete analogy with spherically symmetric Einstein-Lanczos-Lovelock gravity, the field equations admit the generalized Misner-Sharp mass as the first integral that determines the form of the vacuum solution. The arbitrary functions in the action allow for vacuum solutions that describe a larger class of interesting nonsingular black-hole spacetimes than previously available.

Designer black holes from new 2D gravity

We present a family of extensions of spherically symmetric Einstein-Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The field equations are second order and obey a generalized Birkhoff's theorem. The Hamiltonian constraint can be written in terms of a generalized Misner-Sharp mass function that determines the form of the vacuum solution. The action can be designed to yield interesting non-singular black-hole spacetimes as the unique vacuum solutions, including the Hayward black hole as well as a completely new one. The new theories therefore provide a consistent starting point for studying the formation and evaporation of non-singular black holes as a possible resolution to the black hole information loss conundrum.

Black Hole Formation in Lovelock Gravity

We first derive the Hamiltonian for Lovelock gravity and find that it takes the same form as in general relativity when written in terms of the Misner-Sharp mass function. We then minimally couple the action to matter fields to find Hamilton's equations of motion. These are gauge fixed to be in the Painlevé-Gullstrand co-ordinates and are well suited to numerical studies of black hole formation. We then use these equations of motion for the massless scalar field to study the formation of general relativistic black holes in four to eight dimensions and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes in five and six dimensions. We study Choptuik scaling, a phenomenon which relates the initial conditions of a matter distribution to the final observables of small black holes. In both higher dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity we confirm the existence of cusps in the mass scaling relation which had previously only been observed in four dimensional general relativity. In the general relativistic case we then calculate the critical exponents for four to eight dimensions and find agreement with previous calculations by Bland et. al. but not Sorkin et. al. who both worked in null co-ordinates. For the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet case we find that the self-similar behaviour seen in the general relativistic case is destroyed. We find that it is replaced by some other form of scaling structure. In five dimensions we find that the period of the critical solution at the origin is proportional to roughly the cube root of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter and that there is evidence for a minimum black hole radius. In six dimensions we see evidence for a new type of scaling. We also show, from the equations of motion, that there is reason to expect qualitative differences between five and higher dimensions.

Modelling the Evaporation of Non-singular Black Holes

We present a model for studying the formation and evaporation of non-singular (quantum corrected) black holes. The model is based on a generalized form of the dimensionally reduced, spherically symmetric Einstein--Hilbert action and includes a suitably generalized Polyakov action to provide a mechanism for radiation back-reaction. The equations of motion describing self-gravitating scalar field collapse are derived in local form both in null co--ordinates and in Painleve--Gullstrand (flat slice) co--ordinates. They provide the starting point for numerical studies of complete spacetimes containing dynamical horizons that bound a compact trapped region. Such spacetimes have been proposed in the past as solutions to the information loss problem because they possess neither an event horizon nor a singularity. Since the equations of motion in our model are derived from a diffeomorphism invariant action they preserve the constraint algebra and the resulting energy momentum tensor is manifestly conserved.

Hamiltonian dynamics of Lovelock black holes with spherical symmetry

We consider spherically symmetric black holes in generic Lovelock gravity. Using geometrodynamical variables we do a complete Hamiltonian analysis, including derivation of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints and verification of suitable boundary conditions for asymptotically flat black holes. Our analysis leads to a remarkably simple fully reduced Hamiltonian for the vacuum gravitational sector that provides the starting point for the quantization of Lovelock block holes. Finally, we derive the completely reduced equations of motion for the collapse of a spherically symmetric charged, self-gravitating complex scalar field in generalized flat slice (Painlevé-Gullstrand) coordinates.

Geometrodynamics of spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity

We derive the Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity using the geometrodynamics approach pioneered by Kucha\v{r} in the context of four-dimensional general relativity. When written in terms of the areal radius, the generalized Misner-Sharp mass and their conjugate momenta, the generic Lovelock action and Hamiltonian take on precisely the same simple forms as in general relativity. This result supports the interpretation of Lovelock gravity as the natural higher-dimensional extension of general relativity. It also provides an important first step towards the study of the quantum mechanics, Hamiltonian thermodynamics and formation of generic Lovelock black holes.

Higher Dimensional Choptuik Scaling in Painleve Gullstrand Coordinates

We investigate Choptuik scaling in the spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field in higher dimensions using Painleve-Gullstrand (P-G) coordinates. Our analysis confirms the presence in higher dimensions of the cusps in the periodic scaling relationship recently observed in four dimensional collapse. In addition, we address the issue of the asymptotic behaviour of the critical exponent as the number of spacetime dimensions gets large. Our results are consistent with earlier work suggesting that the critical exponent monotonically approaches 1/2 in this limit.
