Cryogenic RF characterization of the MAGO cavity for high-frequency gravitational-wave detection

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities are promising resonant sensors for gravitational-wave detection in the kHz-MHz frequency range. We report the cryogenic RF characterization of a prototype superconducting niobium cavity with an unconventional geometry designed for narrow electromagnetic mode separation. Following an adapted surface preparation procedure, cryogenic tests were performed at Fermilab and DESY at temperatures down to 2\,K. Mechanical tuning at room temperature achieved a mode splitting of approximately 11\,kHz at cryogenic temperature. High electromagnetic quality factors consistent with previous prototype cavities were measured. The measurements further revealed phase transfer characteristics relevant for stable low-level RF control as well as indications of mode coupling potentially caused by one-point multipacting. In addition, first cryogenic measurements of the mechanical eigenmodes yielded mechanical quality factors significantly below commonly assumed theoretical values. These results demonstrate the successful application of established SRF preparation and characterization techniques to a non-standard resonator geometry and provide important experimental input for the development of future SRF-based gravitational-wave detectors.

Improved Dark Photon Sensitivity from the Dark SRF Experiment

We report the refined dark-photon exclusion bound from Dark SRF's pathfinder run. Our new result is driven by improved theoretical modeling of frequency instability in high-quality resonant experiments. Our analysis leads to a constraint that is an order of magnitude stronger than previously reported (corresponding to a signal-to-noise ratio that is four orders of magnitude larger). This result represents the world-leading constraint on non-dark-matter dark photons over a wide range of masses below $6\,\rm μeV$ and translates to the best laboratory-based limit on the photon mass $m_γ<2.9\times 10^{-48}\,\rm g$.

First characterisation of the MAGO cavity, a superconducting RF detector for kHz-MHz gravitational waves

Heterodyne detection using microwave cavities is a promising method for detecting high-frequency gravitational waves or ultralight axion dark matter. In this work, we report on studies conducted on a spherical 2-cell cavity developed by the MAGO collaboration for high-frequency gravitational waves detection. Although fabricated around 20 years ago, the cavity had not been used since. Due to deviations from the nominal geometry, we conducted a mechanical survey and performed room-temperature plastic tuning. Measurements and simulations of the mechanical resonances and electromagnetic properties were carried out, as these are critical for estimating the cavity's gravitational wave coupling potential. Based on these results, we plan further studies in a cryogenic environment. The cavity characterisation does not only provide valuable experience for a planned physics run but also informs the future development of improved cavity designs.

Millikelvin measurements of permittivity and loss tangent of lithium niobate

Lithium Niobate is an electro-optic material with many applications in microwave signal processing, communication, quantum sensing, and quantum computing. In this letter, we present findings on evaluating the complex electromagnetic permittivity of lithium niobate at millikelvin temperatures. Measurements are carried out using a resonant-type method with a superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity operating at 7 GHz and designed to characterize anisotropic dielectrics. The relative permittivity tensor and loss tangent are measured at 50 mK with unprecedented accuracy.

Design of axion and axion dark matter searches based on ultra high Q SRF cavities

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems center is developing searches for dark photons, axions and ALPs with the goal of improving upon the current state-of-the-art sensitivity. These efforts leverage on Fermi National Accelerator expertise on ultra-high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities combined with the center research on quantum technology. Here we focus on multiple axion searches that utilize ~1E10 quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities and their resonant modes to enhance the production and/or detection of axions in the cavity volume. In addition, we present preliminary results of single-mode and multi-mode nonlinearity measurements that were carried out as part of an experimental feasibility study to gain insight on the behavior of the ultra-high quality factor resonators and the experimental RF system in the regime relevant for axion searches.

Tuning of Multicell Superconducting Accelerating Cavities using Pressurized Balloons

Plastic tuning of multicell superconducting accelerating cavities is crucial in the development cycle of cavities for particle accelerators. Cavities must meet stringent requirements regarding the operating mode frequency, field flatness, and eccentricity before lining them up in a cryomodule string. After dressing bare cavities with helium vessels, the welded vessel prevents access to individual cavity cells disallowing any further localized tuning. Currently, there is no straightforward way to tune dressed cavities other than cutting the vessel and then tuning the bare cavity and dressing it back, which would significantly impact cost and schedule. In this paper, we present a novel tuning technique for already jacketed cavities that is non-invasive and cost-effective. The proposed scheme employs pressurized balloons to be temporarily deployed inside the cavity as a means to localize mechanical deformation in specific cells. The proposed tuning technique was successfully utilized to recover a 9-cell 1.3 GHz tesla-style cavity.
