Relaxation approximation and asymptotic stability of stratified solutions to the IPM equation

We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of stably stratified solutions to the Incompressible Porous Media equation (IPM) for initial perturbations in $\dot H^{1-τ}(\mathbb{R}^2) \cap \dot H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s > 3$ and for any $0 < τ<1$. Such result improves the existing literature, where the asymptotic stability is proved for initial perturbations belonging at least to $H^{20}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. More precisely, the aim of the article is threefold. First, we provide a simplified and improved proof of global-in-time well-posedness of the Boussinesq equations with strongly damped vorticity in $H^{1-τ}(\mathbb{R}^2) \cap \dot H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s > 3$ and $0 < τ<1$. Next, we prove the strong convergence of the Boussinesq system with damped vorticity towards (IPM) under a suitable scaling. Lastly, the asymptotic stability of stratified solutions to (IPM) follows as a byproduct. A symmetrization of the approximating system and a careful study of the anisotropic properties of the equations via anisotropic Littlewood-Paley decomposition play key roles to obtain uniform energy estimates. Finally, one of the main new and crucial points is the integrable time decay of the vertical velocity $\|u_2(t)\|_{L^\infty (\mathbb{R}^2)}$ for initial data only in $\dot H^{1-τ}(\mathbb{R}^2) \cap \dot H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s >3$.

On the decay of one-dimensional locally and partially dissipated hyperbolic systems

We study the time-asymptotic behavior of linear hyperbolic systems under partial dissipation which is localized in suitable subsets of the domain. More precisely, we recover the classical decay rates of partially dissipative systems satisfying the stability condition (SK) with a time-delay depending only on the velocity of each component and the size of the undamped region. To quantify this delay, we assume that the undamped region is a bounded space-interval and that the system without space-restriction on the dissipation satisfies the stability condition (SK). The former assumption ensures that the time spent by the characteristics of the system in the undamped region is finite and the latter that whenever the damping is active the solutions decay. Our approach consists in reformulating the system into n coupled transport equations and showing that the time-decay estimates are delayed by the sum of the times each characteristics spend in the undamped region.

Global existence for partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the Lp framework, and relaxation limit

Here we investigate global strong solutions for a class of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the framework of critical homogeneous Besov spaces. Our primary goal is to extend the analysis of our previous paper [10] to a functional framework where the low frequencies of the solution are only bounded in L p-type spaces with p larger than 2. This enables us to prescribe weaker smallness conditions for global well-posedness and to get a more accurate information on the qualitative properties of the constructed solutions. Our existence theorem in particular applies to the multi-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler system with relaxation, and provide us with bounds that are independent of the relaxation parameter. As a consequence, we justify rigorously the relaxation limit to the porous media equation and exhibit explicit rates of convergence for suitable norms, a completely new result to the best of our knowledge.

Partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting : The multi-dimensional case

We are concerned with quasilinear symmetrizable partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq2$. Following our recent work [10] dedicated to the one-dimensional case, we establish the existence of global strong solutions and decay estimates in the critical regularity setting whenever the system under consideration satisfies the so-called (SK) (for Shizuta-Kawashima) condition. Our results in particular apply to the compressible Euler system with damping in the velocity equation. Compared to the papers by Kawashima and Xu [27, 28] devoted to similar issues, our use of hybrid Besov norms with different regularity exponents in low and high frequency enable us to pinpoint optimal smallness conditions for global well-posedness and to get more accurate information on the qualitative properties of the constructed solutions. A great part of our analysis relies on the study of a Lyapunov functional in the spirit of that of Beauchard and Zuazua in [2]. Exhibiting a damped mode with faster time decay than the whole solution also plays a key role.

Partially dissipative one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting, and applications

Here we develop a method for investigating global strong solutions of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting. Compared to the recent works by Kawashima and Xu, we use hybrid Besov spaces with different regularity exponent in low and high frequency. This allows to consider more general data and to track the exact dependency on the dissipation parameter for the solution. Our approach enables us to go beyond the L^2 framework in the treatment of the low frequencies of the solution, which is totally new, to the best of our knowledge. Focus is on the one-dimensional setting (the multi-dimensional case will be considered in a forthcoming paper) and, for expository purpose, the first part of the paper is devoted to a toy model that may be seen as a simplification of the compressible Euler system with damping. More elaborated systems (including the compressible Euler system with general increasing pressure law) are considered at the end of the paper.
