On a Cohen-Lenstra Heuristic for Jacobians of Random Graphs

In this paper, we make specific conjectures about the distribution of Jacobians of random graphs with their canonical duality pairings. Our conjectures are based on a Cohen-Lenstra type heuristic saying that a finite abelian group with duality pairing appears with frequency inversely proportional to the size of the group times the size of the group of automorphisms that preserve the pairing. We conjecture that the Jacobian of a random graph is cyclic with probability a little over .7935. We determine the values of several other statistics on Jacobians of random graphs that would follow from our conjectures. In support of the conjectures, we prove that random symmetric matrices over the p-adic integers, distributed according to Haar measure, have cokernels distributed according to the above heuristic. We also give experimental evidence in support of our conjectures.

Brill-Noether Theory of Maximally Symmetric Graphs

We analyze the Brill-Noether theory of trivalent graphs and multigraphs having largest possible automorphism group in a fixed genus. For trivalent multigraphs with loops of genus at least 3, we show that there exists a graph with maximal automorphism group which is Brill-Noether special. We prove similar results for multigraphs without loops of genus at least 6, as well as simple graphs of genus at least 7. This analysis yields counterexamples, in any sufficiently large genus, to a conjecture of Caporaso.

Inverse continuity on the boundary of the numerical range

Let $A \in M_n(\C)$. We consider the mapping $f_A(x)=x^*Ax$, defined on the unit sphere in $\C^n$. The map has a multi-valued inverse $f_A^{-1}$, and the continuity properties of $f_A^{-1}$ are considered in terms of the structure of the set of pre-images for points in the numerical range. It is shown that there may be only finitely many failures of continuity of $f_A^{-1}$, and conditions for where these failure occur are given. Additionally, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for weak inverse continuity to hold for $n=4$ and a sufficient condition for $n>4$.
