Approaching the Limit of Quantum Clock Precision

Precise and autonomous clocks are of fundamental interest and central importance to both foundational studies and practical applications. Here, we construct a blueprint for a quantum clock governed by time-independent interactions. By carefully-engineered coherent transport in dissipative spin chains, we achieve a scaling exponent at the precision-resolution trade-off fundamental bound, bringing this within reach of physically realistic and experimentally accessible systems. We further introduce a sudden-quench protocol that enables repeated operation through a simple initialization and detachment mechanism. Remarkably, the protocol is robust to imprecise detachment timing, implying that high-precision timekeeping can be achieved even when driven by a clock with much lower precision.

Information-Theoretic Solutions for Seedless QRNG Bootstrapping and Hybrid PQC-QKD Key Combination

This paper considers two challenges faced by practical quantum networks: the bootstrapping of seedless Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) and the resilient combination of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) keys. These issues are addressed using universal hash functions as strong seeded extractors, with security foundations provided by the Quantum Leftover Hash Lemma (QLHL). First, the 'randomness loop' in QRNGs -- the requirement of an initial random seed to generate further randomness -- is resolved by proposing a bootstrapping method using raw data from two independent sources of entropy, given by seedless QRNG sources. Second, it is argued that strong seeded extractors are an alternative to XOR-based key combining that presents different characteristics. Unlike XORing, our method ensures that if the combined output and one initial key are compromised, the remaining key material retains quantifiable smooth min-entropy and remains secure in exchange of longer keys. Furthermore, the proposed method allows binding of transcript information with key material in a natural way, providing a tool to replace computationally based combiners to extend ITS security of the initial key material to the final combined output. By modeling PQC keys as having HILL (Hastad, Impagliazzo, Levin and Luby) entropy, the framework is extended to hybrid PQC-QKD systems. This unified approach provides a mathematically rigorous and future-proof mechanism for both randomness generation and secure key management against quantum adversaries.

Continuous variable quantum key distribution channel emulator for the SPOQC mission

In a free space optical (FSO) communication link from satellite to ground, the losses in the channel will be dynamic. Thus, the characterization of the FSO channel is of great importance and this can be emulated in the lab to evaluate the realistic performance of a satellite payload. In this work, we introduce a novel optical channel emulator capable of replicating these dynamics, especially for Low Earth Orbit based CubeSats. We demonstrate its ability to accurately emulate a satellite-to-ground optical communications channel under various atmospheric turbulence strengths, satellite trajectories, and optical ground station parameters at a given optical wavelength of interest. Our satellite channel emulator was designed to test and benchmark the performance of the continuous variable quantum key distribution payload for the Satellite Platform for Optical Quantum Communications mission - an in-orbit demonstrator for the UK's Quantum Communication Hub, to be launched in early 2026.

On Post-Quantum Cryptography Authentication for Quantum Key Distribution

The traditional way for a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) user to join a quantum network is by authenticating themselves using pre-shared key material. While this approach is sufficient for small-scale networks, it becomes impractical as the network grows, due to the total quadratic increase in the number of pre-shared keys required. To address this scalability issue, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) combined with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) offers a more scalable solution, allowing users to authenticate the QKD traffic remotely to obtain information-theoretical secure (ITS) keys under the presented assumptions. Unlike traditional PKI, which relies on classical cryptographic algorithms such as RSA, the approach presented in this paper leverages PQC algorithms that are believed to be resistant to quantum attacks. Similarly to the SIGMA or TLS protocols, authentication, confidentiality, and integrity are achievable against bounded adversaries to ensure secure and scalable quantum networks.

Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution with Single Quadrature Measurement at Arbitrary Reference Frame

We propose a simplified measurement scheme for a Gaussian modulated coherent state (GMCS) protocol for continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), utilizing homodyne detection without quadrature switching. The reference frame of measurement is taken to be at an arbitrary angle, however, reconciliation converges the proposed scheme to GMCS with switching quadrature protocol. The arbitrary frame of measurement could also include the unknown random thermal drift within Bob's optical measurement setup. We found this scheme is advantageous for practical free-space and fibre-based GMCS protocol based CV-QKD systems as it does not require a phase modulator for random measurement selection quadrature at Bob.

Generating non-classical states from spin coherent states via interaction with ancillary spins

The generation of non-classical states of large quantum systems has attracted much interest from a foundational perspective, but also because of the significant potential of such states in emerging quantum technologies. In this paper we consider the possibility of generating non-classical states of a system of spins by interaction with an ancillary system, starting from an easily prepared initial state . We extend previous results for an ancillary system comprising a single spin to bigger ancillary systems and the interaction strength is enhanced by a factor of the number of ancillary spins. Depending on initial conditions, we find -- by a combination of approximation and numerics -- that the system of spins can evolve to spin cat states, spin squeezed states or to multiple cat states. We also discuss some candidate systems for implementation of the Hamiltonian necessary to generate these non-classical states.

Quantum Auctions using Adiabatic Evolution: The Corrupt Auctioneer and Circuit Implementations

We examine a proposed auction using quantum states to represent bids and distributed adiabatic search to find the winner. When the auctioneer follows the protocol, the final measurement giving the outcome of the auction also destroys the bid states, thereby preserving privacy of losing bidders. We describe how a dishonest auctioneer could alter the protocol to violate this privacy guarantee, and present methods by which bidders can counter such attacks. We also suggest possible quantum circuit implementations of the auctions protocol, and quantum circuits to perpetrate and to counter attacks by a dishonest auctioneer.
