An Empirical Analysis of VM Startup Times in Public IaaS Clouds: An Extended Report

VM startup time is an essential factor in designing elastic cloud applications. For example, a cloud application with autoscaling can reduce under- and over-provisioning of VM instances with a precise estimation of VM startup time, and in turn, it is likely to guarantee the application's performance and improve the cost efficiency. However, VM startup time has been little studied, and available measurement results performed previously did not consider various configurations of VMs for modern cloud applications. In this work, we perform comprehensive measurements and analysis of VM startup time from two major cloud providers, namely Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). With three months of measurements, we collected more than 300,000 data points from each provider by applying a set of configurations, including 11+ VM types, four different data center locations, four VM image sizes, two OS types, and two purchase models (e.g., spot/preemptible VMs vs. on-demand VMs). With extensive analysis, we found that VM startup time can vary significantly because of several important factors, such as VM image sizes, data center locations, VM types, and OS types. Moreover, by comparing with previous measurement results, we confirm that cloud providers (specifically AWS) made significant improvements for the VM startup times and currently have much quicker VM startup times than in the past.

A Survey on Contact Tracing: the Latest Advancements and Challenges

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi, which can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Infectious diseases pose a serious threat to human health, especially COVID-19 that has became a serious worldwide health concern since the end of 2019. Contact tracing is the process of identifying, assessing, and managing people who have been exposed to a disease to prevent its onward transmission. Contact tracing can help us better understand the transmission link of the virus, whereby better interrupting its transmission. Given the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, contact tracing has become one of the most critical measures to effectively curb the spread of the virus. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on contact tracing, with a detailed coverage of the recent advancements the models, digital technologies, protocols and issues involved in contact tracing. The current challenges as well as future directions of contact tracing technologies are also presented.

ADNet: Attention-guided Deformable Convolutional Network for High Dynamic Range Imaging

In this paper, we present an attention-guided deformable convolutional network for hand-held multi-frame high dynamic range (HDR) imaging, namely ADNet. This problem comprises two intractable challenges of how to handle saturation and noise properly and how to tackle misalignments caused by object motion or camera jittering. To address the former, we adopt a spatial attention module to adaptively select the most appropriate regions of various exposure low dynamic range (LDR) images for fusion. For the latter one, we propose to align the gamma-corrected images in the feature-level with a Pyramid, Cascading and Deformable (PCD) alignment module. The proposed ADNet shows state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods, achieving a PSNR-$l$ of 39.4471 and a PSNR-$μ$ of 37.6359 in NTIRE 2021 Multi-Frame HDR Challenge.

LightXML: Transformer with Dynamic Negative Sampling for High-Performance Extreme Multi-label Text Classification

Extreme Multi-label text Classification (XMC) is a task of finding the most relevant labels from a large label set. Nowadays deep learning-based methods have shown significant success in XMC. However, the existing methods (e.g., AttentionXML and X-Transformer etc) still suffer from 1) combining several models to train and predict for one dataset, and 2) sampling negative labels statically during the process of training label ranking model, which reduces both the efficiency and accuracy of the model. To address the above problems, we proposed LightXML, which adopts end-to-end training and dynamic negative labels sampling. In LightXML, we use generative cooperative networks to recall and rank labels, in which label recalling part generates negative and positive labels, and label ranking part distinguishes positive labels from these labels. Through these networks, negative labels are sampled dynamically during label ranking part training by feeding with the same text representation. Extensive experiments show that LightXML outperforms state-of-the-art methods in five extreme multi-label datasets with much smaller model size and lower computational complexity. In particular, on the Amazon dataset with 670K labels, LightXML can reduce the model size up to 72% compared to AttentionXML.

A New Uzawa-exact Type Algorithm for Nonsymmetric Saddle Point Problems

Saddle point problems have been attracting people's attention in recent years. To solve large and sparse saddle point problems, Uzawa type algorithms were proposed. The main contribution of this paper is to present a new Uzawa-exact type algorithm from the aspect of optimization method to solve nonsymmetric saddle point problems, which often arise from linear variational inequalities and finite element discretization of Navier-Stokes equations. In the paper, convergence of the new algorithm is analysed and numerical experiments are presented.
