Hessenberg varieties, intersections of quadrics, and the Springer correspondence

In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2].

Springer correspondence for the split symmetric pair in type $A$

In this paper we establish Springer correspondence for the symmetric pair $(\mathrm{SL}(N),\mathrm{SO}(N))$ using Fourier transform, parabolic induction functor, and a nearby cycle sheaves construction due to Grinberg. As applications, we obtain results on cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and geometric constructions of irreducible representations of Hecke algebras of symmetric groups at $q=-1$.

Nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras over finite fields of characteristic 2 and the Springer correspondence

Let $G$ be an adjoint algebraic group of type $B$, $C$, or $D$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct a Springer correspondence for the Lie algebra of $G$. In particular, for orthogonal Lie algebras in characteristic 2, the structure of component groups of nilpotent centralizers is determined and the number of nilpotent orbits over finite fields is obtained.

Nilpotent orbits in the dual of classical Lie algebras in characteristic 2 and the Springer correspondence

Let $G$ be a simply connected algebraic group of type $B,C$ or $D$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We construct a Springer correspondence for the dual vector space of the Lie algebra of $G$. In particular, we classify the nilpotent orbits in the duals of symplectic and orthogonal Lie algebras over algebraically closed or finite fields of characteristic 2.

Combinatorics of the Springer correspondence for classical Lie algebras and their duals in characteristic 2

We give a combinatorial description of the Springer correspondence for classical Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B,C$ or $D$ and their duals $\mathfrak{g}^*$ in characteristic 2. The combinatorics used here is of the same kind as those appearing in the description of (generalized) Springer correspondence for unipotent case of classical groups $G$ by Lusztig in odd characteristic and by Lusztig and Spaltentstein in characteristic 2. It is very nice that this combinatorics gives a unified description for (generalized) Springer correspondences of classical groups in all cases, namely, in $G$, $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{g}^*$ in all characteristics. Moreover, it gives rise to close formulas for computing the correspondences.

On unipotent and nilpotent pieces for classical groups

We show that the definition of unipotent (resp. nilpotent) pieces for classical groups given by Lusztig (resp. Lusztig and the author) coincides with the combinatorial definition using closure relations on unipotent classes (resp. nilpotent orbits). Moreover we give a closed formula for a map from the set of unipotent classes (resp. nilpotent orbits) in characteristic 2 to the set of unipotent classes in characteristic 0 such that the fibers are the unipotent (resp. nilpotent) pieces.

Nilpotent pieces in the dual of odd orthogonal Lie algebras

Let $\mathcal{N}_{\mathfrak{g}^*}$ be the variety of nilpotent elements in the dual of the Lie algebra of a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. In \cite{Lu2} Lusztig proposes a definition of a partition of $\mathcal{N}_{\mathfrak{g}^*}$ into smooth locally closed subvarieties (which are indexed by the unipotent classes in the corresponding group over complex numbers) and gives explicit results in types $A$, $C$ and $D$. We discuss type $B$ in this note.

Nilpotent coadjoint orbits in small characteristic

We show that the numbers of nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $G_2$ in characteristic $3$ and in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $F_4$ in characteristic $2$ are finite. We determine the closure relation among nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of Lie algebras of type $B,C,F_4$ in characteristic $2$ and in the dual of Lie algebra of type $G_2$ in characteristic $3$. In each case we give an explicit description of the nilpotent pieces in the dual defined in \cite{CP}, which are in general unions of nilpotent coadjoint orbits, coincide with the earlier case-by-case definition in \cite{L4,X4} in the case of classical groups and have nice properties independent of the characteristic of the base field. This completes the classification of nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of Lie algebras of reductive algebraic groups and the determination of closure relation among such orbits in all characteristic.

Elliptic Weyl group elements and unipotent isometries with p=2

Let G be a classical group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2 and let C be an elliptic conjugacy class in the Weyl group. In a previous paper the first named author associated to C a unipotent conjugacy class Φ(C) in G. In this paper we show that Φ(C) can be characterized in terms of the closure relations between unipotent classes. Previously the analogous result was known in odd characteristic and for exceptional groups in any characteristic.
