Regularity of 3D axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we study the three-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes system with nonzero swirl. By establishing a new key inequality for the pair $(\frac{ω^{r}}{r},\frac{ω^θ}{r})$, we get several Prodi-Serrin type regularity criteria based on the angular velocity, $u^θ$. Moreover, we obtain the global well-posedness result if the initial angular velocity $u_{0}^θ$ is appropriate small in the critical space $L^{3}(\R^{3})$. Furthermore, we also get several Prodi-Serrin type regularity criteria based on one component of the solutions, say $ω^3$ or $u^3$.

Time-varying nonlinear regression models: Nonparametric estimation and model selection

This paper considers a general class of nonparametric time series regression models where the regression function can be time-dependent. We establish an asymptotic theory for estimates of the time-varying regression functions. For this general class of models, an important issue in practice is to address the necessity of modeling the regression function as nonlinear and time-varying. To tackle this, we propose an information criterion and prove its selection consistency property. The results are applied to the U.S. Treasury interest rate data.

Latent Feature Based FM Model For Rating Prediction

Rating Prediction is a basic problem in Recommender System, and one of the most widely used method is Factorization Machines(FM). However, traditional matrix factorization methods fail to utilize the benefit of implicit feedback, which has been proved to be important in Rating Prediction problem. In this work, we consider a specific situation, movie rating prediction, where we assume that watching history has a big influence on his/her rating behavior on an item. We introduce two models, Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA) and word2vec, both of which perform state-of-the-art results in training latent features. Based on that, we propose two feature based models. One is the Topic-based FM Model which provides the implicit feedback to the matrix factorization. The other is the Vector-based FM Model which expresses the order info of watching history. Empirical results on three datasets demonstrate that our method performs better than the baseline model and confirm that Vector-based FM Model usually works better as it contains the order info.

An elementary proof of the global existence and uniqueness theorem to 2-D incompressible non-resistive MHD system

In this paper, we provide a much simplified proof of the main result in [Lin, Xu, Zhang, arXiv:1302.5877] concerning the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for a 2D incompressible viscous and non-resistive MHD system under the assumption that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states. Beside the classical energy method, the interpolating inequalities and the algebraic structure of the equations coming from the incompressibility of the fluid are crucial in our arguments. We combine the energy estimates with the $L^\infty$ estimates for time slices to deduce the key $L^1$ in time estimates. The latter is responsible for the global in time existence.

Global well-posedness to the 3-D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with a class of large velocity

In this article, we consider the global well-posedness to the 3-D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with a class of large velocity. More precisely, assuming $a_0 \in \dot{B}_{q,1}^{\frac{3}{q}}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ and $u_0=(u_0^h,u_0^3)\in \dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $p,q \in (1,6)$ with $\sup(\frac{1}{p}, \frac{1}{q})\leq\frac{1}{3}+ \inf (\frac{1}{p}, \frac{1}{q})$, we prove that if $C\|a_0\|_{\dot{B}_{q,1}^{\frac{3}{q}}}^α(\|u_0^3\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}}/μ+1)\leq1$, $\frac{C}μ(\|u_0^h\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}}+\|u_0^3\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}}^{1-α}\|u_0^h\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}}^α)\leq 1$, then the system has a unique global solution $a\in\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}([0,\infty);\dot{B}_{q,1}^{\frac{3}{q}}(\mathbb{R}^3))$, $u\in\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}([0,\infty);\dot{B}_{p,1}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^3))\cap L^1(\mathbb{R}^+;\dot{B}_{p,1}^{1+\frac{3}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^3))$. It improves the recent result of M. Paicu, P. Zhang (J. Funct. Anal. 262 (2012) 3556-3584), where the exponent form of the initial smallness condition is replaced by a polynomial form.

Global Small Solutions to a Complex Fluid Model in 3D

In this paper, we provide a much simplified proof of the main result in [Lin and Zhang, Comm. Pure Appl. Math.,67(2014), 531--580] concerning the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for a 3D incompressible complex fluid model under the assumption that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states.

Block Sampling under Strong Dependence

The paper considers the block sampling method for long-range dependent processes. Our theory generalizes earlier ones by Hall, Jing and Lahiri (1998) on functionals of Gaussian processes and Nordman and Lahiri (2005) on linear processes. In particular, we allow nonlinear transforms of linear processes. Under suitable conditions on physical dependence measures, we prove the validity of the block sampling method. The problem of estimating the self-similar index is also studied.

Global existence in critical spaces for density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluids

In this paper we consider the local and global well-posedness to the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We first study some linear models associated to the incompressible viscoelastic system. Then we approximate the system by a sequence of ordinary differential equations, by means of the Friedrichs method. Some uniform estimates for those solutions will be obtained. Using compactness arguments, we will get the local existence up to extracting a subsequence by means of Ascoli's lemma. With the help of small data conditions and hybird Besov spaces, we finally derive the global existence.

Can Nondeterminism Help Complementation?

Complementation and determinization are two fundamental notions in automata theory. The close relationship between the two has been well observed in the literature. In the case of nondeterministic finite automata on finite words (NFA), complementation and determinization have the same state complexity, namely Theta(2^n) where n is the state size. The same similarity between determinization and complementation was found for Buchi automata, where both operations were shown to have 2^Θ(n lg n) state complexity. An intriguing question is whether there exists a type of omega-automata whose determinization is considerably harder than its complementation. In this paper, we show that for all common types of omega-automata, the determinization problem has the same state complexity as the corresponding complementation problem at the granularity of 2^Θ(.).

Inference of time-varying regression models

We consider parameter estimation, hypothesis testing and variable selection for partially time-varying coefficient models. Our asymptotic theory has the useful feature that it can allow dependent, nonstationary error and covariate processes. With a two-stage method, the parametric component can be estimated with a $n^{1/2}$-convergence rate. A simulation-assisted hypothesis testing procedure is proposed for testing significance and parameter constancy. We further propose an information criterion that can consistently select the true set of significant predictors. Our method is applied to autoregressive models with time-varying coefficients. Simulation results and a real data application are provided.

Classification of entanglement and quantum phase transition in XX model

We study the relation between entanglement and quantum phase transition (QPT) from a new perspective. Motivated by one's intuition: QPT is characterized by the change of the ground-state structure, while entangled states belong to different classes have different structures, we conjecture that QPT occurs as the class of ground-state entanglement changes and prove it in XX model. Despite the classification of multipartite entanglement is yet unresolved, we proposed a new method to judge whether two many-body states belong to the same entanglement class.

Zero-electron-mass limit of Euler-Poisson equations

This paper is concerned with multidimensional Euler-Poisson equations for plasmas. The equations take the form of Euler equations for the conservation laws of the mass density and current density for charge-carriers (electrons and ions), coupled to a Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. We study the limit to zero of some physical parameters which arise in the scaled Euler-Poisson equations, more precisely, which is the limit of vanishing ratio of the electron mass to the ion mass. When the initial data are small in critical Besov spaces, by virtue of the ``Shizuta-Kawashima" skew-symmetry condition, we establish the uniform global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions. Then we develop new frequency-localization Strichartz-type estimates for the equation of acoustics (a modified wave equation) with the aid of the detailed analysis of the semigroup formulation generated by this modified wave operator. Finally, it is shown that the uniform classical solutions converge towards that of the incompressible Euler equations (for \textit{ill-prepared} initial data) in a refined way as the scaled electron-mass tends to zero.

A Tight Lower Bound for Streett Complementation

Finite automata on infinite words ($ω$-automata) proved to be a powerful weapon for modeling and reasoning infinite behaviors of reactive systems. Complementation of $ω$-automata is crucial in many of these applications. But the problem is non-trivial; even after extensive study during the past four decades, we still have an important type of $ω$-automata, namely Streett automata, for which the gap between the current best lower bound $2^{Ω(n \lg nk)}$ and upper bound $2^{Ω(nk \lg nk)}$ is substantial, for the Streett index size $k$ can be exponential in the number of states $n$. In arXiv:1102.2960 we showed a construction for complementing Streett automata with the upper bound $2^{O(n \lg n+nk \lg k)}$ for $k = O(n)$ and $2^{O(n^{2} \lg n)}$ for $k=ω(n)$. In this paper we establish a matching lower bound $2^{Ω(n \lg n+nk \lg k)}$ for $k = O(n)$ and $2^{Ω(n^{2} \lg n)}$ for $k = ω(n)$, and therefore showing that the construction is asymptotically optimal with respect to the $2^{Θ(\cdot)}$ notation.

Tight Upper Bounds for Streett and Parity Complementation

Complementation of finite automata on infinite words is not only a fundamental problem in automata theory, but also serves as a cornerstone for solving numerous decision problems in mathematical logic, model-checking, program analysis and verification. For Streett complementation, a significant gap exists between the current lower bound $2^{Ω(n\lg nk)}$ and upper bound $2^{O(nk\lg nk)}$, where $n$ is the state size, $k$ is the number of Streett pairs, and $k$ can be as large as $2^{n}$. Determining the complexity of Streett complementation has been an open question since the late '80s. In this paper show a complementation construction with upper bound $2^{O(n \lg n+nk \lg k)}$ for $k = O(n)$ and $2^{O(n^{2} \lg n)}$ for $k = ω(n)$, which matches well the lower bound obtained in \cite{CZ11a}. We also obtain a tight upper bound $2^{O(n \lg n)}$ for parity complementation.

Testing for Parallelism Between Trends in Multiple Time Series

This paper considers the inference of trends in multiple, nonstationary time series. To test whether trends are parallel to each other, we use a parallelism index based on the L2-distances between nonparametric trend estimators and their average. A central limit theorem is obtained for the test statistic and the test's consistency is established. We propose a simulation-based approximation to the distribution of the test statistic, which significantly improves upon the normal approximation. The test is also applied to devise a clustering algorithm. Finally, the finite-sample properties of the test are assessed through simulations and the test methodology is illustrated with time series from Motorola cell phone activity in the United States.

Decay Estimates for Isentropic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations in Bounded Domain

In this paper, under the hypothesis that $ρ$ is upper bounded, we construct a Lyapunov functional for the multidimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations and show that the weak solutions decay exponentially to the equilibrium state in $L^2$ norm. This can be regarded as a generalization of Matsumura and Nishida's results in 1982, since our analysis is done in the framework of Lions 1998 and Feireisl et al. 2001, the higher regularity of $(ρ, u)$ and the uniformly positive lower bound of $ρ$ are not necessary in our analysis and vacuum may be admitted. Indeed, the upper bound of the density $ρ$ plays the essential role in our proof.

Global well-posedness for the incompressible viscoelastic fluids in the critical $L^p$ framework

We investigate global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the global solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations, where the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. Like the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes, one may construct the unique global solution for a class of large highly oscillating initial velocity. Our result also implies that the deformation tensor $F$ has the same regularity as the density of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations.
