Dynamics of threshold solutions for the energy-critical inhomogeneous NLS

In this article, we study the long-time dynamics of threshold solutions for the focusing energy-critical inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation and classify the corresponding threshold solutions in dimensions $d=3,4,5$. We first show the existence of special threshold solutions $W^\pm$ by constructing a sequence of approximate solutions in suitable Lorentz space, which exponentially approach the ground state $W$ in one of the time directions. We then prove that solutions with threshold energy either behave as in the subthreshold case or agree with $W, W^+$ or $W^-$ up to the symmetries of the equation. The proof relies on detailed spectral analysis of the linearized Schrödinger operator, the relevant modulation analysis, the global Virial analysis, and the concentration compactness argument in the Lorentz space.

VolumeDiffusion: Flexible Text-to-3D Generation with Efficient Volumetric Encoder

This paper introduces a pioneering 3D volumetric encoder designed for text-to-3D generation. To scale up the training data for the diffusion model, a lightweight network is developed to efficiently acquire feature volumes from multi-view images. The 3D volumes are then trained on a diffusion model for text-to-3D generation using a 3D U-Net. This research further addresses the challenges of inaccurate object captions and high-dimensional feature volumes. The proposed model, trained on the public Objaverse dataset, demonstrates promising outcomes in producing diverse and recognizable samples from text prompts. Notably, it empowers finer control over object part characteristics through textual cues, fostering model creativity by seamlessly combining multiple concepts within a single object. This research significantly contributes to the progress of 3D generation by introducing an efficient, flexible, and scalable representation methodology.

IRGen: Generative Modeling for Image Retrieval

While generative modeling has become prevalent across numerous research fields, its integration into the realm of image retrieval remains largely unexplored and underjustified. In this paper, we present a novel methodology, reframing image retrieval as a variant of generative modeling and employing a sequence-to-sequence model. This approach is harmoniously aligned with the current trend towards unification in research, presenting a cohesive framework that allows for end-to-end differentiable searching. This, in turn, facilitates superior performance via direct optimization techniques. The development of our model, dubbed IRGen, addresses the critical technical challenge of converting an image into a concise sequence of semantic units, which is pivotal for enabling efficient and effective search. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on three widely-used image retrieval benchmarks as well as two million-scale datasets, yielding significant improvement compared to prior competitive retrieval methods. In addition, the notable surge in precision scores facilitated by generative modeling presents the potential to bypass the reranking phase, which is traditionally indispensable in practical retrieval workflows.

Comparison of Static Application Security Testing Tools and Large Language Models for Repo-level Vulnerability Detection

Software vulnerabilities pose significant security challenges and potential risks to society, necessitating extensive efforts in automated vulnerability detection. There are two popular lines of work to address automated vulnerability detection. On one hand, Static Application Security Testing (SAST) is usually utilized to scan source code for security vulnerabilities, especially in industries. On the other hand, deep learning (DL)-based methods, especially since the introduction of large language models (LLMs), have demonstrated their potential in software vulnerability detection. However, there is no comparative study between SAST tools and LLMs, aiming to determine their effectiveness in vulnerability detection, understand the pros and cons of both SAST and LLMs, and explore the potential combination of these two families of approaches. In this paper, we compared 15 diverse SAST tools with 12 popular or state-of-the-art open-source LLMs in detecting software vulnerabilities from repositories of three popular programming languages: Java, C, and Python. The experimental results showed that SAST tools obtain low vulnerability detection rates with relatively low false positives, while LLMs can detect up 90\% to 100\% of vulnerabilities but suffer from high false positives. By further ensembling the SAST tools and LLMs, the drawbacks of both SAST tools and LLMs can be mitigated to some extent. Our analysis sheds light on both the current progress and future directions for software vulnerability detection.

CUPID: Leveraging ChatGPT for More Accurate Duplicate Bug Report Detection

Duplicate bug report detection (DBRD) is a long-standing challenge in both academia and industry. Over the past decades, researchers have proposed various approaches to detect duplicate bug reports more accurately. With the recent advancement of deep learning, researchers have also proposed several deep learning-based approaches to address the DBRD task. In the bug repositories with many bug reports, deep learning-based approaches have shown promising performance. However, in the bug repositories with a smaller number of bug reports, i.e., around 10k, the existing deep learning approaches show worse performance than the traditional approaches. Traditional approaches have limitations, too, e.g., they are usually based on the bag-of-words model, which cannot capture the semantics of bug reports. To address these aforementioned challenges, we seek to leverage a state-of-the-art large language model (LLM) to improve the performance of the traditional DBRD approach. In this paper, we propose an approach called CUPID, which combines the bestperforming traditional DBRD approach (i.e., REP) with the state-of-the-art LLM (i.e., ChatGPT). We conducted an evaluation by comparing CUPID with three existing approaches on three datasets. The experimental results show that CUPID achieves state-of-theart results, reaching Recall Rate@10 scores ranging from 0.602 to 0.654 across all the datasets analyzed. In particular, CUPID improves over the prior state-ofthe-art approach by 5% - 8% in terms of Recall Rate@10 in the datasets. CUPID also surpassed the state-of-the-art deep learning-based DBRD approach by up to 82%.

RodinHD: High-Fidelity 3D Avatar Generation with Diffusion Models

We present RodinHD, which can generate high-fidelity 3D avatars from a portrait image. Existing methods fail to capture intricate details such as hairstyles which we tackle in this paper. We first identify an overlooked problem of catastrophic forgetting that arises when fitting triplanes sequentially on many avatars, caused by the MLP decoder sharing scheme. To overcome this issue, we raise a novel data scheduling strategy and a weight consolidation regularization term, which improves the decoder's capability of rendering sharper details. Additionally, we optimize the guiding effect of the portrait image by computing a finer-grained hierarchical representation that captures rich 2D texture cues, and injecting them to the 3D diffusion model at multiple layers via cross-attention. When trained on 46K avatars with a noise schedule optimized for triplanes, the resulting model can generate 3D avatars with notably better details than previous methods and can generalize to in-the-wild portrait input.

Efficient Characterizations of Multiphoton States with an Ultra-thin Optical Device

Metasurface enables the generation and manipulation of multiphoton entanglement with flat optics, providing a more efficient platform for large-scale photonic quantum information processing. Here, we show that a single metasurface optical device would allow more efficient characterizations of multiphoton entangled states, such as shadow tomography, which generally requires fast and complicated control of optical setups to perform information-complete measurements, a demanding task using conventional optics. The compact and stable device here allows implementations of general positive observable value measures with a reduced sample complexity and significantly alleviates the experimental complexity to implement shadow tomography. Integrating self-learning and calibration algorithms, we observe notable advantages in the reconstruction of multiphoton entanglement, including using fewer measurements, having higher accuracy, and being robust against experimental imperfections. Our work unveils the feasibility of metasurface as a favorable integrated optical device for efficient characterization of multiphoton entanglement, and sheds light on scalable photonic quantum technologies with ultra-thin optical devices.

Quantification of Entanglement and Coherence with Purity Detection

Entanglement and coherence are fundamental properties of quantum systems, promising to power near future quantum technologies, such as quantum computation, quantum communication and quantum metrology. Yet, their quantification, rather than mere detection, generally requires reconstructing the spectrum of quantum states, i.e., experimentally challenging measurement sets that increase exponentially with the system size. Here, we demonstrate quantitative bounds to operationally useful entanglement and coherence that are universally valid, analytically computable, and experimentally friendly. Specifically, our main theoretical results are lower and upper bounds to the coherent information and the relative entropy of coherence in terms of local and global purities of quantum states. To validate our proposal, we experimentally implement two purity detection methods in an optical system: shadow estimation with random measurements and collective measurements on pairs of state copies. The experiment shows that both the coherent information and the relative entropy of coherence of pure and mixed unknown quantum states can be bounded by purity functions. Our research offers an efficient means of verifying large-scale quantum information processing.

Experimental virtual distillation of entanglement and coherence

Noise is in general inevitable and detrimental to practical and useful quantum communication and computation. Under the resource theory framework, resource distillation serves as a generic tool to overcome the effect of noise. Yet, conventional resource distillation protocols generally require operations on multi-copies of resource states, and strong limitations exist that restrict their practical utilities. Recently, by relaxing the setting of resource distillation to only approximating the measurement statistics instead of the quantum state, a resource-frugal protocol, virtual resource distillation, is proposed, which allows more effective distillation of noisy resources. Here, we report its experimental implementation on a photonic quantum system for the distillation of quantum coherence (up to dimension 4) and bipartite entanglement. We show the virtual distillation of the maximal superposed state of dimension four from the state of dimension two, an impossible task in conventional coherence distillation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the virtual distillation of entanglement with operations acting only on a single copy of the noisy EPR pair and showcase the quantum teleportation task using the virtually distilled EPR pair with a significantly improved fidelity of the teleported state. These results illustrate the feasibility of the virtual resource distillation method and pave the way for accurate manipulation of quantum resources with noisy quantum hardware.

Explainable Interfaces for Rapid Gaze-Based Interactions in Mixed Reality

Gaze-based interactions offer a potential way for users to naturally engage with mixed reality (XR) interfaces. Black-box machine learning models enabled higher accuracy for gaze-based interactions. However, due to the black-box nature of the model, users might not be able to understand and effectively adapt their gaze behaviour to achieve high quality interaction. We posit that explainable AI (XAI) techniques can facilitate understanding of and interaction with gaze-based model-driven system in XR. To study this, we built a real-time, multi-level XAI interface for gaze-based interaction using a deep learning model, and evaluated it during a visual search task in XR. A between-subjects study revealed that participants who interacted with XAI made more accurate selections compared to those who did not use the XAI system (i.e., F1 score increase of 10.8%). Additionally, participants who used the XAI system adapted their gaze behavior over time to make more effective selections. These findings suggest that XAI can potentially be used to assist users in more effective collaboration with model-driven interactions in XR.

Experimental Hybrid Shadow Tomography and Distillation

Characterization of quantum states is a fundamental requirement in quantum science and technology. As a promising framework, shadow tomography shows significant efficiency in estimating linear functions, however, for the challenging nonlinear ones, it requires measurements at an exponential cost. Here, we implement an advanced shadow protocol, so-called hybrid shadow~(HS) tomography, to reduce the measurement cost in the estimation of nonlinear functions in an optical system. We design and realize a deterministic quantum Fredkin gate with single photon, achieving high process fidelity of $0.935\pm0.001$. Utilizing this novel Fredkin gate, we demonstrate HS in the estimations, like the higher-order moments up to 4, and reveal that the sample complexity of HS is significantly reduced compared with the original shadow protocol. Furthermore, we utilize these higher-degree functions to implement virtual distillation, which effectively extracts a high-purity quantum state from two noisy copies. The virtual distillation is also verified in a proof-of-principle demonstration of quantum metrology, further enhancing the accuracy of parameter estimation. Our results suggest that HS is efficient in state characterization and promising for quantum technologies.

Representation Learning for Stack Overflow Posts: How Far are We?

The tremendous success of Stack Overflow has accumulated an extensive corpus of software engineering knowledge, thus motivating researchers to propose various solutions for analyzing its content. The performance of such solutions hinges significantly on the selection of representation model for Stack Overflow posts. As the volume of literature on Stack Overflow continues to burgeon, it highlights the need for a powerful Stack Overflow post representation model and drives researchers' interest in developing specialized representation models that can adeptly capture the intricacies of Stack Overflow posts. The state-of-the-art (SOTA) Stack Overflow post representation models are Post2Vec and BERTOverflow, which are built upon trendy neural networks such as convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer architecture (e.g., BERT). Despite their promising results, these representation methods have not been evaluated in the same experimental setting. To fill the research gap, we first empirically compare the performance of the representation models designed specifically for Stack Overflow posts (Post2Vec and BERTOverflow) in a wide range of related tasks, i.e., tag recommendation, relatedness prediction, and API recommendation. To find more suitable representation models for the posts, we further explore a diverse set of BERT-based models, including (1) general domain language models (RoBERTa and Longformer) and (2) language models built with software engineering-related textual artifacts (CodeBERT, GraphCodeBERT, and seBERT). However, it also illustrates the ``No Silver Bullet'' concept, as none of the models consistently wins against all the others. Inspired by the findings, we propose SOBERT, which employs a simple-yet-effective strategy to improve the best-performing model by continuing the pre-training phase with the textual artifact from Stack Overflow.

On Evaluating the Efficiency of Source Code Generated by LLMs

Recent years have seen the remarkable capabilities of large language models (LLMs) for code generation. Different from existing work that evaluate the correctness of the code generated by LLMs, we propose to further evaluate its efficiency. More efficient code can lead to higher performance and execution efficiency of programs and software completed by LLM-assisted programming. First, we evaluate the efficiency of the code generated by LLMs on two benchmarks, HumanEval and MBPP. Then, we choose a set of programming problems from the online judge platform LeetCode to conduct a more difficult evaluation. Finally, we explore several prompts that would enable LLMs to generate more efficient code.

Ferroelectric metals in van der Waals bilayers

The combination of metallicity and ferroelectricity breaks traditional boundaries, paving new avenues for innovative electronic materials and devices. This breakthrough is particularly notable, as metallicity and ferroelectricity have traditionally been considered mutually exclusive physical properties. In this work, starting with non-polar metallic single layers, we propose a general scheme for designing 2D ferroelectric metals (FEMs) based on van der Waals interaction. By first-principles calculations, we further substantiate the feasibility of the design scheme in real materials such as FeSe and H-MnTe2. Notably, this scheme unveils unique metallic ferroelectricity, characterized by reversing polarization through interlayer sliding. Furthermore, the combination of inherent magnetism with sliding ferroelectricity leads to multiferroicity. The investigated design scheme and observed phenomena have broad applicability across 2D materials. Our results not only pave the way for research in 2D FEMs but also offer promising prospects for foundational studies of coupled physical phenomena in 2D lattices.

DeepCRE: Transforming Drug R&D via AI-Driven Cross-drug Response Evaluation

The fields of therapeutic application and drug research and development (R&D) both face substantial challenges, i.e., the therapeutic domain calls for more treatment alternatives, while numerous promising pre-clinical drugs have failed in clinical trials. One of the reasons is the inadequacy of Cross-drug Response Evaluation (CRE) during the late stages of drug R&D. Although in-silico CRE models bring a promising solution, existing methodologies are restricted to early stages of drug R&D, such as target and cell-line levels, offering limited improvement to clinical success rates. Herein, we introduce DeepCRE, a pioneering AI model designed to predict CRE effectively in the late stages of drug R&D. DeepCRE outperforms the existing best models by achieving an average performance improvement of 17.7% in patient-level CRE, and a 5-fold increase in indication-level CRE, facilitating more accurate personalized treatment predictions and better pharmaceutical value assessment for indications, respectively. Furthermore, DeepCRE has identified a set of six drug candidates that show significantly greater effectiveness than a comparator set of two approved drugs in 5/8 colorectal cancer organoids. This demonstrates the capability of DeepCRE to systematically uncover a spectrum of drug candidates with enhanced therapeutic effects, highlighting its potential to transform drug R&D.

Mode-resolved thermometry of trapped ion with Deep Learning

In trapped ion system, accurate thermometry of ion is crucial for evaluating the system state and precisely performing quantum operations. However, when the motional state of a single ion is far away from the ground state, the spatial dimension of the phonon state sharply increases, making it difficult to realize accurate and mode-resolved thermometry with existing methods. In this work, we apply deep learning for the first time to the thermometry of trapped ion, providing an efficient and mode-resolved method for accurately estimating large mean phonon numbers. Our trained neural network model can be directly applied to other experimental setups without retraining or post-processing, as long as the related parameters are covered by the model's effective range, and it can also be conveniently extended to other parameter ranges. We have conducted experimental verification based on our surface trap, of which the result has shown the accuracy and efficiency of the method for thermometry of single ion under large mean phonon number, and its mode resolution characteristic can make it better applied to the characterization of system parameters, such as evaluating cooling effectiveness, analyzing surface trap noise.

Large Language Model for Vulnerability Detection: Emerging Results and Future Directions

Previous learning-based vulnerability detection methods relied on either medium-sized pre-trained models or smaller neural networks from scratch. Recent advancements in Large Pre-Trained Language Models (LLMs) have showcased remarkable few-shot learning capabilities in various tasks. However, the effectiveness of LLMs in detecting software vulnerabilities is largely unexplored. This paper aims to bridge this gap by exploring how LLMs perform with various prompts, particularly focusing on two state-of-the-art LLMs: GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Our experimental results showed that GPT-3.5 achieves competitive performance with the prior state-of-the-art vulnerability detection approach and GPT-4 consistently outperformed the state-of-the-art.

Langlands Dualities through Bethe/Gauge Correspondence for 3d Gauge Theories

For non-simple laced Lie algebras, the $\text{B}_{N}$ and $\text{C}_{N}$ are Langlands dual to each other in mathematical. In this article, we give another Bethe/Gauge correspondence between 3d (or 2d) classical Lie group supersymmetry gauge theory with closed and open $\text{XXZ}$ (or $\text{XXX}$) spin chain. Here, the representations of the $\text{ADE}$ Lie algebras are self-dual, and while for the non-simple laced Lie algebras $\text{B}_{N}$ and $\text{C}_{N}$, their roles are exchanged in contrast with the results in \cite{DZ23a}. From Bethe/Gauge correspondence point of view, the two types of the effective superpotentials are Langlands duality to each other. For the $\text{B}_{N}$-type Lie algebra, a remarkable feature is that, to fix the spin sites by boundaries through Bethe/Gauge, the spins of the sites will be reversed. This is similarly to the so called electron-hole effect, we call this as a boundary-spin effect, a new kind of duality.
