Stacking Polarity-Controlled Interlayer Photocarrier Dynamics in MoSe2/MoS2 Heterostructures

Control of interlayer photocarrier dynamics is central to optoelectronic applications of van der Waals heterostructures, yet deterministic and spatially uniform tuning strategies remain limited. Here we show that stacking polarity provides a global control parameter for photocarrier dynamics in MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterostructures. By comparing hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R) MoS$_2$ bilayers and engineering opposite interface terminations in 3R stacking, we resolve stacking-dependent interlayer charge-transfer dynamics using ultrafast pump--probe spectroscopy. While charge transfer in the 2H heterostructure occurs faster than the experimental resolution, the 3R heterostructures show time-resolvable charge transfer that slows from $0.25$ to $0.37$~ps depending on stacking polarity. Furthermore, the interlayer exciton lifetime is tuned from $\sim$$40$ to $\sim$$170$~ps. These effects arise from stacking-induced layer polarization in 3R MoS$_2$, which modulates interfacial wavefunction overlap.

Uncertainty calibration for latent-variable regression models

Uncertainty quantification is essential for scientific analysis, as it allows for the evaluation and interpretation of variability and reliability in complex systems and datasets. In their original form, multivariate statistical regression models (partial least-squares regression, PLS, principal component regression, PCR) along with their kernelized versions (kernel partial least-squares regression, K-PLS, kernel principal component regression, K-PCR), do not incorporate uncertainty quantification as part of their output. In this study, we propose a method inspired by conformal inference to estimate and calibrate the uncertainty of multivariate statistical models. The result of this method is a point prediction accompanied by prediction intervals that depend on the input data. We tested the proposed method on both traditional and kernelized versions of PLS and PCR. The method is demonstrated using synthetic data, as well as laboratory near-infrared (NIR) and airborne hyperspectral regression models for estimating functional plant traits. The model was able to successfully identify the uncertain regions in the simulated data and match the magnitude of the uncertainty. In real-case scenarios, the optimised model was not overconfident nor underconfident when estimating from test data: for example, for a 95% prediction interval, 95% of the true observations were inside the prediction interval.

Direct Visualization of Irreducible Ferrielectricity in Crystals

In solids, charge polarity can one-to-one correspond to spin polarity phenomenologically, e.g. ferroelectricity/ferromagnetism, antiferroelectricity/antiferromagnetism, and even dipole-vortex/magnetic-vortex, but ferrielectricity/ferrimagnetism kept telling a disparate story in microscopic level. Since the definition of a charge dipole involves more than one ion, there may be multiple choices for a dipole unit, which makes most ferrielectric orders equivalent to ferroelectric ones, i.e. this ferrielectricity is not necessary to be a real independent branch of polarity. In this work, by using the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, we visualize a nontrivial ferrielectric structural evolution in BaFe2Se3, in which the development of two polar sub-lattices is out-of-sync, for which we term it as irreducible ferrielectricity. Such irreducible ferrielectricity leads to a non-monotonic behavior for the temperature-dependent polarization, and even a compensation point in the ordered state. Our finding unambiguously distinguishes ferrielectrics from ferroelectrics in solids.

Berge-Fulkerson coloring for infinite families of snarks

It is conjectured by Berge and Fulkerson that every bridgeless cubic graph has six perfect matchings such that each edge is contained in exactly two of them. H$\ddot{a}$gglund constructed two graphs Blowup$(K_4, C)$ and Blowup$(Prism, C_4)$. Based on these two graphs, Chen constructed infinite families of bridgeless cubic graphs $M_{0,1,2, \ldots,k-2, k-1}$ which is obtained from cyclically 4-edge-connected and having a Fulkerson-cover cubic graphs $G_0,G_1,\ldots, G_{k-1}$ by recursive process. If each $G_i$ for $1\leq i\leq k-1$ is a cyclically 4-edge-connected snarks with excessive index at least 5, Chen proved that these infinite families are snarks. He obtained that each graph in $M_{0,1,2,3}$ has a Fulkerson-cover and gave the open problem that whether every graph in $M_{0,1,2, \ldots,k-2, k-1}$ has a Fulkerson-cover. In this paper, we solve this problem and prove that every graph in $M_{0,1,2, \ldots,k-2, k-1}$ has a Fulkerson-cover.
