Cornertronics in Two-Dimensional Second-Order Topological Insulators

Traditional electronic devices rely on the electron's intrinsic degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) to process information. However, additional d.o.f. like the valley, can emerge in the low-energy states of certain systems. Here, we show that the quantum dots (QDs) constructed from two-dimensional (2D) second-order topological insulators (SOTI) posses a new kind of d.o.f., namely corner freedom, related to the topological corner states that reside at different corners of the systems. Since the corner states are well separated in real space, they can be individually and intuitively manipulated, giving rise to the concept of cornertronics. Via symmetry analysis and material search, we identify the TiSiCO-family monolayers as the first prototype of cornertronics materials, where the corner states can be controlled by both electric and optical fields, due to novel corner-layer coupling (CLC) effect and corner-contrasted linear dichroism. Furthermore, we find that the band gap of the TiSiCO nanodisk lies in the terahertz region and is robust to size reduction. These results indicate that the TiSiCO nanodisks can be used to design terahertz devices with ultrasmall size and electric-field tunable band gap. Besides, the TiSiCO nanodisks are simultaneously sensitive to both the strength and polarization of the terahertz waves. Our findings not only pave the way for cornertronics, but also open a new direction for research in 2D SOTI, QD and terahertz electronics.

3D carbon allotropes: Topological quantum materials with obstructed atomic insulating phases, multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, and real topology

The study of topological phases with unconventional bulk-boundary correspondences and nontrivial real Chern number has garnered significant attention in the topological states of matter. Using the first-principle calculations and theoretical analysis, we perform a high-throughput material screening of the 3D obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) and 3D real Chern insulators (RCIs) based on the Samara Carbon Allotrope Database (SACADA). Results show that 422 out of 703 3D carbon allotropes are 3D OAIs with multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, including 2D obstructed surface states (OSSs) and 1D hinge states, which are in one dimension and two dimensions lower than the 3D bulk, respectively. The 2D OSSs in these OAIs can be modified when subjected to appropriate boundaries, which benefits the investigation of surface engineering and the development of efficient topological catalysts. These 422 OAIs, which have 2D and 1D boundary states, are excellent platforms for multi-dimensional topological boundaries research. Remarkably, 138 of 422 OAIs are also 3D RCIs, which show a nontrivial real topology in the protection of spacetime inversion symmetry. Our work not only provides a comprehensive list of 3D carbon-based OAIs and RCIs, but also guides their application in various aspects based on multiple bulk-boundary correspondences and real topological phases.

Four-band tight-binding model of TiSiCO-family monolayers

The TiSiCO-family monolayers have recently been attracting significant attention due to their unique valley-layer coupling (VLC). In this work, we present a minimal, four-band tight-binding (TB) model to capture the low-energy physics of the TiSiCO-family monolayers $X_{2}Y$CO$_{2}$ ($X=$ Ti, Zr, Hf; $Y=$ Si, Ge) with strong VLC. These monolayers comprise two $X$ atom layers separated by approximately $4$ Å~in the out-of-plane direction. Around each valley ($X$ or $X'$), the conduction and valence bands are mainly dominated by the $A_{1}\{d_{z^{2}(x^{2}-y^{2})}\}$ and $B_{2}\{d_{yz}\}$ orbitals of the top $X$ atoms, and the $A_{1}\{d_{z^{2}(x^{2}-y^{2})}\}$ and $B_{1}\{d_{xz}\}$ orbitals of the bottom $X$ atoms. Using these four states as a basis, we construct a symmetry-allowed TB model. Through parameter fitting from first-principles calculations, the four-band TB model not only reproduces the electronic band structure, but also captures the strong VLC, high-order topology, and valley-contrasting linear dichroism of the monolayers. Furthermore, the TB model reveals that these monolayers may exhibit various intriguing topological phases under electric fields and biaxial strains. Hence, the TB model established here can serve as the starting point for future research exploring the physics related to VLC and the $X_{2}Y$CO$_{2}$ monolayers.

The constraint ability of Hubble parameter by gravitational wave standard sirens on cosmological parameters

In this paper, we present the application of a new method measuring Hubble parameter $H(z)$ by using the anisotropy of luminosity distance($d_{L}$) of the gravitational wave(GW) standard sirens of neutron star(NS) binary system. The method has never been put into practice so far due to the lack of the ability of detecting GW. However, LIGO's success in detecting GW of black hole(BH) binary system merger announced the potential possibility of this new method. We apply this method to several GW detecting projects, including Advanced LIGO(aLIGO), Einstein Telescope(ET) and DECIGO, and evaluate its constraint ability on cosmological parameters of $H(z)$. It turns out that the $H(z)$ by aLIGO and ET is of bad accuracy, while the $H(z)$ by DECIGO shows a good one. We simulate $H(z)$ data at every 0.1 redshift span using the error information of $H(z)$ by DECIGO, and put the mock data into the forecasting of cosmological parameters. Compared with the previous data and method, we get an obviously tighter constraint on cosmological parameters by mock data, and a concomitantly higher value of Figure of Merit(FoM, the reciprocal of the area enclosed by the $2σ$ confidence region). For a 3-year-observation by standard sirens of DECIGO, the FoM value is as high as 170.82. If a 10-year-observation is launched, the FoM could reach 569.42. For comparison, the FoM of 38 actual observed $H(z)$ data(OHD) is 9.3. We also investigate the undulant universe, which shows a comparable improvement on the constraint of cosmological parameters. These improvement indicates that the new method has great potential in further cosmological constraints.

From Type-II Triply Degenerate Nodal Points and Three-Band Nodal Rings to Type-II Dirac Points in Centrosymmetric Zirconium Oxide

Using first-principles calculations, we report that ZrO is a topological material with the coexistence of three pairs of type-II triply degenerate nodal points (TNPs) and three nodal rings (NRs), when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. Noticeably, the TNPs reside around Fermi energy with large linear energy range along tilt direction (> 1 eV) and the NRs are formed by three strongly entangled bands. Under symmetry-preserving strain, each NR would evolve into four droplet-shaped NRs before fading away, producing distinct evolution compared with that in usual two-band NR. When SOC is included, TNPs would transform into type-II Dirac points while all the NRs have gaped. Remarkably, the type-II Dirac points inherit the advantages of TNPs: residing around Fermi energy and exhibiting large linear energy range. Both features facilitate the observation of interesting phenomena induced by type-II dispersion. The symmetry protections and low-energy Hamiltonian for the nontrivial band crossings are discussed.

Correlation evolution and monogamy of two geometric quantum discords in multipartite systems

We explore two different geometric quantum discords defined respectively via the trace norm (GQD-1) and Hilbert-Schmidt norm (GQD-2) in multipartite systems. A rigorous hierarchy relation is revealed for the two GQDs in a class of symmetric two-qubit $X$-shape states. For multiqubit pure states, it is found that both GQDs are related to the entanglement concurrence, with the hierarchy relation being saturated. Furthermore, we look into a four-partite dynamical system consisting of two cavities interacting with independent reservoirs. It is found that the GQD-2 can exhibit various sudden change behaviours, while the GQD-1 only evolves asymptotically, with the two GQDs exhibiting different monogamous properties.

The anomalous top quark coupling tqg and tW production at the LHC

Many new physics models beyond the standard model ($SM$) can give rise to the large anomalous top couplings $tqg$ ($q=u$ and $c$). We focus our attention on these couplings induced by the topcolor-assisted technicolor ($TC2$) model and the littlest Higgs model with $T$-parity (called $LHT $ model), and consider their contributions to the production cross section and the charge asymmetry for $tW$ production at the $LHC$. We find that the anomalous top coupling $tqg$ induced by these two kinds of new physics models can indeed generate sizable charge asymmetry. The correction effects of the $LHT $ model on the production cross sections of the processes $pp\rightarrow tW^-+X$ and $pp\rightarrow \bar{t}W^++X$ are significant large, which might be detected at the $LHC$.

The scalars from the topcolor scenario and the spin correlations of the top pair production at the LHC

The topcolor scenario predicts the existences of some new scalars. In this paper, we consider the contributions of these new particles to the observables, which are related to the top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production at the LHC. It is found that these new particles can generate significant corrections to the $t\bar{t}$ production cross section and the $t\bar{t}$ spin correlations.
