Chandra Discovery of a Candidate Hyper-Luminous X-ray Source in MCG+11-11-032

We present a multi-wavelength analysis of MCG+11-11-032, a nearby AGN with the unique classification of both a binary and a dual AGN candidate. With new Chandra observations we aim to resolve any dual AGN system via imaging data, and search for signs of a binary AGN via analysis of the X-ray spectrum. Analyzing the Chandra spectrum, we find no evidence of previously suggested double-peaked Fe K$α$ lines; the spectrum is instead best fit by an absorbed powerlaw with a single Fe K$α$ line, as well as an additional line centered at $\approx$7.5 keV. The Chandra observation reveals faint, soft, and extended X-ray emission, possibly linked to low-level nuclear outflows. Further analysis shows evidence for a compact, hard source -- MCG+11-11-032 X2 -- located 3.27'' from the primary AGN. Modeling MCG+11-11-032 X2 as a compact source, we find that it is relatively luminous ($L_{\text{2$-$10 keV}} = 1.52_{-0.48}^{+0.96}\times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$), and the location is coincident with an compact and off-nuclear source resolved in Hubble Space Telescope infrared (F105W) and ultraviolet (F621M, F547M) bands. Pairing our X-ray results with a 144 MHz radio detection at the host galaxy location, we observe X-ray and radio properties similar to those of ESO 243-49 HLX-1, suggesting that MCG+11-11-032 X2 may be a hyper-luminous X-ray source. This detection with Chandra highlights the importance of a high-resolution X-ray imager, and how previous binary AGN candidates detected with large-aperture instruments benefit from high-resolution follow-up. Future spatially resolved optical spectra, and deeper X-ray observations, can better constrain the origin of MCG+11-11-032 X2.

Edge detection imaging by quasi-bound states in the continuum

Optical metasurfaces have revolutionized analog computing and image processing at sub-wavelength scales with faster speed and lower power consumption. They typically involve spatial differentiation with engineered angular dispersion. Quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) have recently emerged as a powerful tool for tailoring properties of optical resonances. While quasi-BICs have been explored in various applications that require high $Q$-factors and enhanced field confinement, their full potential in image processing remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate edge detection imaging by leveraging a quasi-BIC in an all-dielectric metasurface. This metasurface, composed of four nanodisks per unit cell, supports a polarization-independent quasi-BIC through structural perturbations, allowing simultaneously engineering $Q$-factor and angular dispersion. Importantly, we find that with suitable parameters, this quasi-BIC metasurface can perform isotropic two-dimensional spatial differentiation, which is the core element for realizing edge detection. Following the theoretical design, we fabricate the metasurfaces on the silicon-on-insulator platform and experimentally validate their capability of high-quality, efficient, and uniform edge detection imaging under different incident polarizations. Our results illuminate the mechanisms of edge detection with quasi-BIC metasurfaces and highlight new opportunities for their application in ultra-compact, low-power optical computing devices.

High-efficiency broadband achromatic metalens in the visible

The metalenses have been extensively studied for their compact and flexible characteristics in focusing and imaging applications. However, it remains a significant challenge to design a broadband achromatic metalens that maintains high efficiency under arbitrary polarization incidence. In this work, we design a broadband achromatic metalens that achieves polarization-independent, high-efficiency focusing by effectively utilizing both co-polarization and cross-polarization components of the transmitted light. Using a minimalist anisotropic nanofin library, we optimize the phase distribution of the metalens at each designed wavelength with the particle swarm algorithm. Numerical simulations demonstrate a stable focal length with a deviation of less than 4$\%$ and an average focusing efficiency of 80.5$\%$ in the visible wavelength range of 450 to 650 nm. Moreover, we design a multi-wavelength off-axis bi-focal metalens to demonstrate the flexible control of output light phase and dispersion achieved by this method. The generality of this design enables its implementation in various metasurface devices, accelerating applications in broadband imaging and virtual/augmented reality.

Vernacular? I Barely Know Her: Challenges with Style Control and Stereotyping

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being used in educational and learning applications. Research has demonstrated that controlling for style, to fit the needs of the learner, fosters increased understanding, promotes inclusion, and helps with knowledge distillation. To understand the capabilities and limitations of contemporary LLMs in style control, we evaluated five state-of-the-art models: GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o, Llama-3, and Mistral-instruct- 7B across two style control tasks. We observed significant inconsistencies in the first task, with model performances averaging between 5th and 8th grade reading levels for tasks intended for first-graders, and standard deviations up to 27.6. For our second task, we observed a statistically significant improvement in performance from 0.02 to 0.26. However, we find that even without stereotypes in reference texts, LLMs often generated culturally insensitive content during their tasks. We provide a thorough analysis and discussion of the results.

Enhanced second harmonic generation in high-$Q$ all-dielectric metasurfaces with backward frequency conversion

Here we employ the quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) resonance in all-dielectric metasurfaces for efficient nonlinear processes in consideration of the backward frequency conversion. We theoretically study the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from symmetry-broken AlGaAs metasurfaces and reveal the efficiency enhancement empowered by high-$Q$ quasi-BIC resonances. By introducing the correction term of nonlinear polarization at the fundamental wave field to the conventional undepleted approximation, we uncover the effect of backward frequency conversion on the nonlinear conversation efficiency. The SHG efficiency as $2.45\times10^{-2}$ with the developed depleted model, shows a $14.3\%$ decrease compared with $2.86\times10^{-2}$ in conventional undepleted approximation, under the incident intensity of 10 MW/cm$^{2}$. Our results are of significant importance for designing efficient nonlinear metasurfaces supporting high-$Q$ resonances.

A New Heterogeneous Hybrid Massive MIMO Receiver with An Intrinsic Ability of Removing Phase Ambiguity of DOA Estimation via Machine Learning

Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna arrays eventuate a huge amount of circuit costs and computational complexity. To satisfy the needs of high precision and low cost in future green wireless communication, the conventional Hybrid analog and digital MIMO receive structure emerges a natural choice. But it exists an issue of the phase ambiguity in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation and requires at least two time-slots to complete one-time DOA measurement with the first time-slot generating the set of candidate solutions and the remaining ones to find a true direction by received beamforming over this set. This will lead to a low time-efficiency. To address this problem, a new heterogeneous sub-connected hybrid analog and digital (HAD) MIMO structure is proposed with an intrinsic ability of removing phase ambiguity and a corresponding new framework is developed to implement a rapid high-precision DOA estimation using only single time-slot. This framework consists of two steps: 1) form a set of candidate solutions using existing methods like MUSIC) find the class of the true solutions and compute the class mean. To infer the set of true solutions, we propose two new clustering methods: weight global minimum distance (WGMD) and weight local minimum distance (WLMD). And, we also enhance two classic clustering methods: accelerating local weighted k-means (ALW-K-means) and improved density. Additionally, the corresponding closed-form expression of Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived. Simulation results show that the proposed frameworks using the above four clustering can approach the CRLB at almost all SNR regions except for extremely low SNR. Four clustering methods have an accuracy decreasing order as follows: WGMD, improved DBSCAN, ALW-K-means and WLMD.

Tracking Supermassive Black Hole Mergers from kpc to sub-pc Scales with AXIS

We present an analysis showcasing how the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS), a proposed NASA Probe-class mission, will significantly increase our understanding of supermassive black holes undergoing mergers -- from kpc to sub-pc scales. In particular, the AXIS point spread function, field of view, and effective area are expected to result in (1) the detection of hundreds to thousands of new dual AGNs across the redshift range 0 < z < 5 and (2) blind searches for binary AGNs that are exhibiting merger signatures in their light curves and spectra. AXIS will detect some of the highest-redshift dual AGNs to date, over a large range of physical separations. The large sample of AGN pairs detected by AXIS (over a magnitude more than currently known) will result in the first X-ray study that quantifies the frequency of dual AGNs as a function of redshift up to z = 4.

Performance Analysis of Uplink/Downlink Decoupled Access in Cellular-V2X Networks

This paper firstly develops an analytical framework to investigate the performance of uplink (UL) / downlink (DL) decoupled access in cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) networks, in which a vehicle's UL/DL can be connected to different macro/small base stations (MBSs/SBSs) separately. Using the stochastic geometry analytical tool, the UL/DL decoupled access C-V2X is modeled as a Cox process, and we obtain the following theoretical results, i.e., 1) the probability of different UL/DL joint association cases i.e., both the UL and DL are associated with the different MBSs or SBSs, or they are associated with different types of BSs; 2) the distance distribution of a vehicle to its serving BSs in each case; 3) the spectral efficiency of UL/DL in each case; and 4) the UL/DL coverage probability of MBS/SBS. The analyses reveal the insights and performance gain of UL/DL decoupled access. Through extensive simulations, \textcolor{black}{the accuracy of the proposed analytical framework is validated.} Both the analytical and simulation results show that UL/DL decoupled access can improve spectral efficiency. The theoretical results can be directly used for estimating the statistical performance of a UL/DL decoupled access C-V2X network.

Extremely intrinsic chirality in two-dimensional planar waveguide grating induced by quasi-bound states in the continuum

The strong chiral light-matter interaction is crucial for various important fields such as chiral optics, quantum optics, and biomedical optics, driving a quest for the extreme intrinsic chirality assisted by ultrahigh quality ($Q$-) factor resonances. In this quest, we propose a straightforward method to achieve extreme intrinsic chirality in lossless planar structures by manipulating the quasi-BIC through in-plane perturbation. The temporal coupled-mode theory is employed to derive the conditions necessary for achieving maximal intrinsic chirality. The quasi-BIC should be excited within the transparent spectral range of the structure and couple with $x$- and $y$-polarized waves with the same intensity but a phase difference of $π$/2. For an illustration, a planar chiral dielectric dimeric waveguide grating is designed that strong interacts with left circularly polarized (LCP) light while decouples from right circularly polarized (RCP) light through in-plane symmetry engineering. Furthermore, by adjusting the magnitude of the in-plane asymmetry, we can independently manipulate the $Q$-factors of the chiral quasi-BIC while maintaining nearly unity circular dichroism. Our results provide a simple yet powerful paradigm for achieving extreme intrinsic chirality on an easily manufacturable platform, which may have potential applications in chiral emission, chiral sensing, and enantiomer separation.

Single-sized phase-change metasurfaces for dynamic information multiplexing and encryption

Optical metasurfaces empower us to manipulate the electromagnetic space and control light propagation at the nanoscale, offering a powerful tool to achieve modulation of light for information processing and storage. In this work, we propose a phase-change metasurface to realize dynamic multiplexing and encryption of near-field information. Based on the orientation degeneracy and polarization control governed by Malus's law, we elaborately design the orientation distribution of Sb$_2$S$_3$ meta-atoms with the same dimension to simultaneously satisfy the amplitude modulation requirements of different channels. Using the corresponding polarization control as decoding keys, three different nanoprinting images can be displayed, and these multiplexed images can be switched on and off by leveraging the reversible tunability of the Sb$_2$S$_3$ meta-atoms between the amorphous and crystalline states. With the unparalleled advantages of ultra-compactness, simple design strategy, high information density and security, the proposed metasurfaces afford promising prospects for high-end applications in ultracompact and intelligent dynamic display, high-dense optical data storage, optical information encryption, etc.

Intensive Swift and LCO monitoring of PG 1302$-$102: AGN disk reverberation mapping of a supermassive black hole binary candidate

We present an intensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign of the quasar PG 1302$-$102 with Swift and the Las Cumbres Observatory network telescopes. At $z\sim0.3$, it tests the limits of the reverberation mapping (RM) technique in probing the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and extends the parameter space to high masses and high accretion rates. This is also the first time the RM technique has been applied to test disk structures predicted in the SMBH binary model that has been suggested for this source. PG 1302$-$102 was observed at a $\sim$daily cadence for $\sim 9$ months in 14 bands spanning from X-ray to UV and optical wavelengths, and it shows moderate to significant levels of variability correlated between wavelengths. We measure the inter-band time lags which are consistent with a $τ\propto λ^{4/3}$ relation as expected from standard disk reprocessing, albeit with large errors. The disk size implied by the lag spectrum is consistent with the expected disk size for its black hole mass within uncertainties. While the source resembles other reverberation-mapped AGN in many respects, and we do not find evidence supporting the prevalent hypothesis that it hosts an SMBH binary, we demonstrate the feasibility of studying SMBH binaries from this novel angle and suggest possibilities for the LSST Deep Drilling Fields.

Efficient photon-pair generation empowered by dual quasi-bound states in the continuum

Here we demonstrate the efficient photon-pair generation via spontaneous parametric down conversion from a semiconductor metasurface supporting dual quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). In a simple metasurface design composed of AlGaAs ellipse nano-cyclinders, the two high-$Q$ quasi-BIC resonances that coincide with the generated signal and idler frequencies significantly boost the local electric field. This leads to a substantial enhancement in the reverse classical nonlinear process of sum frequency generation and subsequently the remarkable high generation rate of photon pairs under the quantum-classical correspondence principle. Within a narrowband wavelength regime around the quasi-BIC resonances, the rate of pair production is enhanced up to $\sim10^{4}$ Hz, two orders of magnitude larger than that in the Mie resonant AlGaAs nanoantennas. Moreover, the photon pair emission is mainly concentrated in the normal direction with respect to the metasurface, and shows tunable rate with the $Q$ factor by engineering the rotation angle of nano-cylinders. The presented work enables nanoscale sources of high-quality entangled photons which will find applications in advanced quantum imaging and communications.

The NANOGrav 12.5-year data set: A computationally efficient eccentric binary search pipeline and constraints on an eccentric supermassive binary candidate in 3C 66B

The radio galaxy 3C 66B has been hypothesized to host a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) at its center based on electromagnetic observations. Its apparent 1.05-year period and low redshift ($\sim0.02$) make it an interesting testbed to search for low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs) using Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) experiments. This source has been subjected to multiple searches for continuous GWs from a circular SMBHB, resulting in progressively more stringent constraints on its GW amplitude and chirp mass. In this paper, we develop a pipeline for performing Bayesian targeted searches for eccentric SMBHBs in PTA data sets, and test its efficacy by applying it on simulated data sets with varying injected signal strengths. We also search for a realistic eccentric SMBHB source in 3C 66B using the NANOGrav 12.5-year data set employing PTA signal models containing Earth term-only as well as Earth+Pulsar term contributions using this pipeline. Due to limitations in our PTA signal model, we get meaningful results only when the initial eccentricity $e_0<0.5$ and the symmetric mass ratio $η>0.1$. We find no evidence for an eccentric SMBHB signal in our data, and therefore place 95% upper limits on the PTA signal amplitude of $88.1\pm3.7$ ns for the Earth term-only and $81.74\pm0.86$ ns for the Earth+Pulsar term searches for $e_0<0.5$ and $η>0.1$. Similar 95% upper limits on the chirp mass are $(1.98 \pm 0.05) \times 10^9\,M_{\odot}$ and $(1.81 \pm 0.01) \times 10^9\,M_{\odot}$. These upper limits, while less stringent than those calculated from a circular binary search in the NANOGrav 12.5-year data set, are consistent with the SMBHB model of 3C 66B developed from electromagnetic observations.

How to Detect an Astrophysical Nanohertz Gravitational-Wave Background

Analysis of pulsar timing data have provided evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave background in the nHz frequency band. The most plausible source of such a background is the superposition of signals from millions of supermassive black hole binaries. The standard statistical techniques used to search for such a background and assess its significance make several simplifying assumptions, namely: i) Gaussianity; ii) isotropy; and most often iii) a power-law spectrum. However, a stochastic background from a finite collection of binaries does not exactly satisfy any of these assumptions. To understand the effect of these assumptions, we test standard analysis techniques on a large collection of realistic simulated datasets. The dataset length, observing schedule, and noise levels were chosen to emulate the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. Simulated signals from millions of binaries drawn from models based on the Illustris cosmological hydrodynamical simulation were added to the data. We find that the standard statistical methods perform remarkably well on these simulated datasets, despite their fundamental assumptions not being strictly met. They are able to achieve a confident detection of the background. However, even for a fixed set of astrophysical parameters, different realizations of the universe result in a large variance in the significance and recovered parameters of the background. We also find that the presence of loud individual binaries can bias the spectral recovery of the background if we do not account for them.

Prospects for Time-Domain and Multi-Messenger Science with AXIS

The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) promises revolutionary science in the X-ray and multi-messenger time domain. AXIS will leverage excellent spatial resolution (<1.5 arcsec), sensitivity (80x that of Swift), and a large collecting area (5-10x that of Chandra) across a 24-arcmin diameter field of view to discover and characterize a wide range of X-ray transients from supernova-shock breakouts to tidal disruption events to highly variable supermassive black holes. The observatory's ability to localize and monitor faint X-ray sources opens up new opportunities to hunt for counterparts to distant binary neutron star mergers, fast radio bursts, and exotic phenomena like fast X-ray transients. AXIS will offer a response time of <2 hours to community alerts, enabling studies of gravitational wave sources, high-energy neutrino emitters, X-ray binaries, magnetars, and other targets of opportunity. This white paper highlights some of the discovery science that will be driven by AXIS in this burgeoning field of time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics.

BASS-XL: X-ray variability properties of unobscured Active Galactic Nuclei

We investigate the X-ray variability properties of Seyfert1 Galaxies belonging to the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). The sample includes 151 unobscured (N$_{\rm H}<10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) AGNs observed with XMM-Newton for a total exposure time of ~27 Ms, representing the deepest variability study done so far with high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton observations, almost doubling the number of observations analysed in previous works. We constrain the relation between the normalised excess variance and the 2-10 keV AGN luminosities, black hole masses and Eddington ratios. We find a highly significant correlation between $σ^{2}_{NXS}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$, with a scatter of ~0.85 dex. For sources with high $L_{2-10}$ this correlation has a lower normalization, confirming that more luminous (higher mass) AGNs show less variability. We explored the $σ^{2}_{NXS}$ vs $M_{\rm BH}$ relation for the sub-sample of sources with $M_{\rm BH}$ estimated via the "reverberation mapping" technique, finding a tighter anti-correlation, with a scatter of ~ 0.65 dex. We examine how the $σ^{2}_{NXS}$ changes with energy by studying the relation between the variability in the hard (3-10 keV) and the soft (0.2-1 keV)/medium (1-3 keV) energy bands, finding that the spectral components dominating the hard energy band are more variable than the spectral components dominating in softer energy bands, on timescales shorter than 10 ks.

The NANOGrav 15-year data set: Search for Transverse Polarization Modes in the Gravitational-Wave Background

Recently we found compelling evidence for a gravitational wave background with Hellings and Downs (HD) correlations in our 15-year data set. These correlations describe gravitational waves as predicted by general relativity, which has two transverse polarization modes. However, more general metric theories of gravity can have additional polarization modes which produce different interpulsar correlations. In this work we search the NANOGrav 15-year data set for evidence of a gravitational wave background with quadrupolar Hellings and Downs (HD) and Scalar Transverse (ST) correlations. We find that HD correlations are the best fit to the data, and no significant evidence in favor of ST correlations. While Bayes factors show strong evidence for a correlated signal, the data does not strongly prefer either correlation signature, with Bayes factors $\sim 2$ when comparing HD to ST correlations, and $\sim 1$ for HD plus ST correlations to HD correlations alone. However, when modeled alongside HD correlations, the amplitude and spectral index posteriors for ST correlations are uninformative, with the HD process accounting for the vast majority of the total signal. Using the optimal statistic, a frequentist technique that focuses on the pulsar-pair cross-correlations, we find median signal-to-noise-ratios of 5.0 for HD and 4.6 for ST correlations when fit for separately, and median signal-to-noise-ratios of 3.5 for HD and 3.0 for ST correlations when fit for simultaneously. While the signal-to-noise-ratios for each of the correlations are comparable, the estimated amplitude and spectral index for HD are a significantly better fit to the total signal, in agreement with our Bayesian analysis.

Decision-making and control with diffractive optical networks

The ultimate goal of artificial intelligence is to mimic the human brain to perform decision-making and control directly from high-dimensional sensory input. Diffractive optical networks provide a promising solution for implementing artificial intelligence with high-speed and low-power consumption. Most of the reported diffractive optical networks focus on single or multiple tasks that do not involve environmental interaction, such as object recognition and image classification. In contrast, the networks capable of performing decision-making and control have not yet been developed to our knowledge. Here, we propose using deep reinforcement learning to implement diffractive optical networks that imitate human-level decision-making and control capability. Such networks taking advantage of a residual architecture, allow for finding optimal control policies through interaction with the environment and can be readily implemented with existing optical devices. The superior performance of these networks is verified by engaging three types of classic games, Tic-Tac-Toe, Super Mario Bros., and Car Racing. Finally, we present an experimental demonstration of playing Tic-Tac-Toe by leveraging diffractive optical networks based on a spatial light modulator. Our work represents a solid step forward in advancing diffractive optical networks, which promises a fundamental shift from the target-driven control of a pre-designed state for simple recognition or classification tasks to the high-level sensory capability of artificial intelligence. It may find exciting applications in autonomous driving, intelligent robots, and intelligent manufacturing.
