Viscoelasticity reshapes the frequency response of a rotating magnetic particle

A magnetic particle driven by a rotating magnetic field undergoes a transition from synchronous to asynchronous rotation at a critical driving frequency. The asynchronous dynamics is well understood in Newtonian fluids but remains unclear in viscoelastic media. Here, we develop a theoretical description of the asynchronous rotation of a magnetic particle in a Jeffreys-type viscoelastic fluid. The particle's time-averaged angular velocity exhibits a nontrivial frequency dependence that changes from non-monotonic to monotonic as the polymer relaxation time increases. This behavior is explained by the interplay among magnetic driving, viscoelastic relaxation, and frequency-dependent viscous dissipation. We further derive an asymptotic expression that captures the non-monotonic dependence. These results clarify how solvent and polymer contributions jointly control asynchronous rotation and provide a physical basis for guiding relevant applications in complex fluids.

Policy, Technology, and Economic Efficiency of Infrastructure Energy Investment: A Strategic Analysis for a Low-Carbon Future

This study provides a comprehensive strategic analysis of infrastructure energy investment in the context of the global low-carbon transition. Integrating quantitative panel data analysis across 15 countries (2010-2023), detailed case studies of Germany, the United States, China, and the European Union, and scenario simulations through 2050, we examine how policy, technology, and economic factors interact to determine investment effectiveness. Using panel data from 15 countries over the period 2010-2023, we find that renewable energy investment is systematically associated with higher economic growth and lower carbon emissions after controlling for country and year fixed effects.

Nuclear mass table in deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, II: Even-$Z$ nuclei

The mass table in the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) with the PC-PK1 density functional has been established for even-$Z$ nuclei with $8\le Z\le120$, extended from the previous work for even-even nuclei [Zhang $\it{et.~al.}$ (DRHBc Mass Table Collaboration), At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 144, 101488 (2022)]. The calculated binding energies, two-nucleon and one-neutron separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, quadrupole deformations, and neutron and proton Fermi surfaces are tabulated and compared with available experimental data. A total of 4829 even-$Z$ nuclei are predicted to be bound, with an rms deviation of 1.477 MeV from the 1244 mass data. Good agreement with the available experimental odd-even mass differences, $\alpha$ decay energies, and charge radii is also achieved. The description accuracy for nuclear masses and nucleon separation energies as well as the prediction for drip lines is compared with the results obtained from other relativistic and nonrelativistic density functional. The comparison shows that the DRHBc theory with PC-PK1 provides an excellent microscopic description for the masses of even-$Z$ nuclei. The systematics of the nucleon separation energies, odd-even mass differences, pairing energies, two-nucleon gaps, $\alpha$ decay energies, rms radii, quadrupole deformations, potential energy curves, neutron density distributions, and neutron mean-field potentials are discussed.

$Ξ$ hypernuclei $^{15}_Ξ$C, $^{12}_Ξ$Be and $ΞN$ two-body interaction

We study the energy spectra of $Ξ$ hypernuclei $^{15}_Ξ$C and $^{12}_Ξ$Be with a relativistic mean field (RMF) model with meson exchange $ΞN$ interactions. The RMF parameters are optimized to reproduce the average energy of KINKA and IRRAWADDY events for the ground state and also the average energy of KISO and IBUKI events for the excited state in $^{15}_Ξ$C. The potential depth of average $ΞN$ mean field potential is found to be about $-12$ MeV in the nuclear matter limit. We further introduce the two-body $s$- and $p$-wave interactions between valence nucleons and $Ξ$ particle. We found that the $s$-wave interaction deduced from the HAL LQCD results is rather weak to obtain the energy difference between IRRAWADDY and KINKA events. The $p$-wave interaction is added and fitted to reproduce the energy difference. The resulting interaction together with the $s$-wave one gives a reasonable energy simultanously for the IBUKI event as an excited $Ξ_p$ state. The model is further applied to predict the energy spectrum of $^{12}_Ξ$Be.

MHD Modeling of Solar Coronal Magnetic Evolution Driven by Photospheric Flow

It is well known that magnetic fields dominate the dynamics in the solar corona, and new generation of numerical modelling of the evolution of coronal magnetic fields, as featured with boundary conditions driven directly by observation data, are being developed. This paper describes a new approach of data-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of solar active region (AR) magnetic field evolution, which is for the first time that a data-driven full-MHD model utilizes directly the photospheric velocity field from DAVE4VM. We constructed a well-established MHD equilibrium based on a single vector magnetogram by employing an MHD-relaxation approach with sufficiently small kinetic viscosity, and used this MHD equilibrium as the initial conditions for subsequent data-driven evolution. Then we derived the photospheric surface flows from a time series of observed magentograms based on the DAVE4VM method. The surface flows are finally inputted in time sequence to the bottom boundary of the MHD model to self-consistently update the magnetic field at every time step by solving directly the magnetic induction equation at the bottom boundary. We applied this data-driven model to study the magnetic field evolution of AR 12158 with SDO/HMI vector magnetograms. Our model reproduced a quasi-static stress of the field lines through mainly the rotational flow of the AR's leading sunspot, which makes the core field lines to form a coherent S shape consistent with the sigmoid structure as seen in the SDO/AIA images. The total magnetic energy obtained in the simulation matches closely the accumulated magnetic energy as calculated directly from the original vector magnetogram with the DAVE4VM derived flow field. Such a data-driven model will be used to study how the coronal field, as driven by the slow photospheric motions, reaches a unstable state and runs into eruptions.

RMSE-ELM: Recursive Model based Selective Ensemble of Extreme Learning Machines for Robustness Improvement

Extreme learning machine (ELM) as an emerging branch of shallow networks has shown its excellent generalization and fast learning speed. However, for blended data, the robustness of ELM is weak because its weights and biases of hidden nodes are set randomly. Moreover, the noisy data exert a negative effect. To solve this problem, a new framework called RMSE-ELM is proposed in this paper. It is a two-layer recursive model. In the first layer, the framework trains lots of ELMs in different groups concurrently, then employs selective ensemble to pick out an optimal set of ELMs in each group, which can be merged into a large group of ELMs called candidate pool. In the second layer, selective ensemble is recursively used on candidate pool to acquire the final ensemble. In the experiments, we apply UCI blended datasets to confirm the robustness of our new approach in two key aspects (mean square error and standard deviation). The space complexity of our method is increased to some degree, but the results have shown that RMSE-ELM significantly improves robustness with slightly computational time compared with representative methods (ELM, OP-ELM, GASEN-ELM, GASEN-BP and E-GASEN). It becomes a potential framework to solve robustness issue of ELM for high-dimensional blended data in the future.

HSR: L1/2 Regularized Sparse Representation for Fast Face Recognition using Hierarchical Feature Selection

In this paper, we propose a novel method for fast face recognition called L1/2 Regularized Sparse Representation using Hierarchical Feature Selection (HSR). By employing hierarchical feature selection, we can compress the scale and dimension of global dictionary, which directly contributes to the decrease of computational cost in sparse representation that our approach is strongly rooted in. It consists of Gabor wavelets and Extreme Learning Machine Auto-Encoder (ELM-AE) hierarchically. For Gabor wavelets part, local features can be extracted at multiple scales and orientations to form Gabor-feature based image, which in turn improves the recognition rate. Besides, in the presence of occluded face image, the scale of Gabor-feature based global dictionary can be compressed accordingly because redundancies exist in Gabor-feature based occlusion dictionary. For ELM-AE part, the dimension of Gabor-feature based global dictionary can be compressed because high-dimensional face images can be rapidly represented by low-dimensional feature. By introducing L1/2 regularization, our approach can produce sparser and more robust representation compared to regularized Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC), which also contributes to the decrease of the computational cost in sparse representation. In comparison with related work such as SRC and Gabor-feature based SRC (GSRC), experimental results on a variety of face databases demonstrate the great advantage of our method for computational cost. Moreover, we also achieve approximate or even better recognition rate.
