Inverting Incomplete Fourier Transforms by a Sparse Regularization Model and Applications in Seismic Wavefield Modeling

We propose a sparse regularization model for inversion of incomplete Fourier transforms and apply it to seismic wavefield modeling. The objective function of the proposed model employs the Moreau envelope of the $\ell_0$ norm under a tight framelet system as a regularization to promote sparsity. This model leads to a non-smooth, non-convex optimization problem for which traditional iteration schemes are inefficient or even divergent. By exploiting special structures of the $\ell_0$ norm, we identify a local minimizer of the proposed non-convex optimization problem with a global minimizer of a convex optimization problem, which provides us insights for the development of efficient and convergence guaranteed algorithms to solve it. We characterize the solution of the regularization model in terms of a fixed-point of a map defined by the proximity operator of the $\ell_0$ norm and develop a fixed-point iteration algorithm to solve it. By connecting the map with an $α$-averaged nonexpansive operator, we prove that the sequence generated by the proposed fixed-point proximity algorithm converges to a local minimizer of the proposed model. Our numerical examples confirm that the proposed model outperforms significantly the existing model based on the $\ell_1$-norm. The seismic wavefield modeling in the frequency domain requires solving a series of the Helmholtz equation with large wave numbers, which is a computationally intensive task. Applying the proposed sparse regularization model to the seismic wavefield modeling requires data of only a few low frequencies, avoiding solving the Helmholtz equation with large wave numbers. Numerical results show that the proposed method performs better than the existing method based on the $\ell_1$ norm in terms of the SNR values and visual quality of the restored synthetic seismograms.

FedCos: A Scene-adaptive Federated Optimization Enhancement for Performance Improvement

As an emerging technology, federated learning (FL) involves training machine learning models over distributed edge devices, which attracts sustained attention and has been extensively studied. However, the heterogeneity of client data severely degrades the performance of FL compared with that in centralized training. It causes the locally trained models of clients to move in different directions. On the one hand, it slows down or even stalls the global updates, leading to inefficient communication. On the other hand, it enlarges the distances between local models, resulting in an aggregated global model with poor performance. Fortunately, these shortcomings can be mitigated by reducing the angle between the directions that local models move in. Based on this fact, we propose FedCos, which reduces the directional inconsistency of local models by introducing a cosine-similarity penalty. It promotes the local model iterations towards an auxiliary global direction. Moreover, our approach is auto-adapt to various non-IID settings without an elaborate selection of hyperparameters. The experimental results show that FedCos outperforms the well-known baselines and can enhance them under a variety of FL scenes, including varying degrees of data heterogeneity, different number of participants, and cross-silo and cross-device settings. Besides, FedCos improves communication efficiency by 2 to 5 times. With the help of FedCos, multiple FL methods require significantly fewer communication rounds than before to obtain a model with comparable performance.

Color image segmentation based on a convex K-means approach

Image segmentation is a fundamental and challenging task in image processing and computer vision. The color image segmentation is attracting more attention due to the color image provides more information than the gray image. In this paper, we propose a variational model based on a convex K-means approach to segment color images. The proposed variational method uses a combination of $l_1$ and $l_2$ regularizers to maintain edge information of objects in images while overcoming the staircase effect. Meanwhile, our one-stage strategy is an improved version based on the smoothing and thresholding strategy, which contributes to improving the accuracy of segmentation. The proposed method performs the following steps. First, we specify the color set which can be determined by human or the K-means method. Second, we use a variational model to obtain the most appropriate color for each pixel from the color set via convex relaxation and lifting. The Chambolle-Pock algorithm and simplex projection are applied to solve the variational model effectively. Experimental results and comparison analysis demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method.

High sensitivity refractive index sensor based on the semicircular bent fiber

A refractive index sensor based on a semicircular bent fiber is presented. The interference occurs between the cladding mode excited in the bending region and the core mode. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that the resonant dip wavelength decreases linearly with the increase of the refractive index of the surrounding environment. A high sensitivity of 1031 nm per refractive index unit is obtained over the refractive index range of 1.3324 to 1.3435 by using a bent fiber with a bending radius of 500 μm.

A new trace bilinear form on cyclic $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$-codes

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of cardinality $q$, where $q$ is a power of a prime number $p$, $t\geq 2$ an even number satisfying $t \not\equiv 1 \;(\bmod \;p)$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$ an extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q$ with degree $t$. First, a new trace bilinear form on $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}^n$ which is called $Δ$-bilinear form is given, where $n$ is a positive integer coprime to $q$. Then according to this new trace bilinear form, bases and enumeration of cyclic $Δ$-self-orthogonal and cyclic $Δ$-self-dual $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$-codes are investigated when $t=2$. Furthermore, some good $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-codes are obtained.

On double cyclic codes over Z_4

Let $R=\mathbb{Z}_4$ be the integer ring mod $4$. A double cyclic code of length $(r,s)$ over $R$ is a set that can be partitioned into two parts that any cyclic shift of the coordinates of both parts leaves invariant the code. These codes can be viewed as $R[x]$-submodules of $R[x]/(x^r-1)\times R[x]/(x^s-1)$. In this paper, we determine the generator polynomials of this family of codes as $R[x]$-submodules of $R[x]/(x^r-1)\times R[x]/(x^s-1)$. Further, we also give the minimal generating sets of this family of codes as $R$-submodules of $R[x]/(x^r-1)\times R[x]/(x^s-1)$. Some optimal or suboptimal nonlinear binary codes are obtained from this family of codes. Finally, we determine the relationship of generators between the double cyclic code and its dual.
