TSBP: Improving Object Detection in Histology Images via Test-time Self-guided Bounding-box Propagation

A global threshold (e.g., 0.5) is often applied to determine which bounding boxes should be included in the final results for an object detection task. A higher threshold reduces false positives but may result in missing a significant portion of true positives. A lower threshold can increase detection recall but may also result in more false positives. Because of this, using a preset global threshold (e.g., 0.5) applied to all the bounding box candidates may lead to suboptimal solutions. In this paper, we propose a Test-time Self-guided Bounding-box Propagation (TSBP) method, leveraging Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) to enhance object detection in histology images. TSBP utilizes bounding boxes with high confidence to influence those with low confidence, leveraging visual similarities between them. This propagation mechanism enables bounding boxes to be selected in a controllable, explainable, and robust manner, which surpasses the effectiveness of using simple thresholds and uncertainty calibration methods. Importantly, TSBP does not necessitate additional labeled samples for model training or parameter estimation, unlike calibration methods. We conduct experiments on gland detection and cell detection tasks in histology images. The results show that our proposed TSBP significantly improves detection outcomes when working in conjunction with state-of-the-art deep learning-based detection networks. Compared to other methods such as uncertainty calibration, TSBP yields more robust and accurate object detection predictions while using no additional labeled samples. The code is available at https://github.com/jwhgdeu/TSBP.

System-Level Simulation Framework for NB-IoT: Key Features and Performance Evaluation

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a technology specifically designated by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to meet the explosive demand for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and it is evolving to RedCap. Industrial companies have increasingly adopted NB-IoT as the solution for mMTC due to its lightweight design and comprehensive technical specifications released by 3GPP. This paper presents a system-level simulation framework for NB-IoT networks to evaluate their performance. The system-level simulator is structured into four parts: initialization, pre-generation, main simulation loop, and post-processing. Additionally, three essential features are investigated to enhance coverage, support massive connections, and ensure low power consumption, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the cumulative distribution function curves of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio fully comply with industrial standards. Furthermore, the throughput performance explains how NB-IoT networks realize massive connections at the cost of data rate. This work highlights its practical utility and paves the way for developing NB-IoT networks.

Micro-Expression Recognition by Motion Feature Extraction based on Pre-training

Micro-expressions (MEs) are spontaneous, unconscious facial expressions that have promising applications in various fields such as psychotherapy and national security. Thus, micro-expression recognition (MER) has attracted more and more attention from researchers. Although various MER methods have emerged especially with the development of deep learning techniques, the task still faces several challenges, e.g. subtle motion and limited training data. To address these problems, we propose a novel motion extraction strategy (MoExt) for the MER task and use additional macro-expression data in the pre-training process. We primarily pretrain the feature separator and motion extractor using the contrastive loss, thus enabling them to extract representative motion features. In MoExt, shape features and texture features are first extracted separately from onset and apex frames, and then motion features related to MEs are extracted based on the shape features of both frames. To enable the model to more effectively separate features, we utilize the extracted motion features and the texture features from the onset frame to reconstruct the apex frame. Through pre-training, the module is enabled to extract inter-frame motion features of facial expressions while excluding irrelevant information. The feature separator and motion extractor are ultimately integrated into the MER network, which is then fine-tuned using the target ME data. The effectiveness of proposed method is validated on three commonly used datasets, i.e., CASME II, SMIC, SAMM, and CAS(ME)3 dataset. The results show that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods.

OutlierTune: Efficient Channel-Wise Quantization for Large Language Models

Quantizing the activations of large language models (LLMs) has been a significant challenge due to the presence of structured outliers. Most existing methods focus on the per-token or per-tensor quantization of activations, making it difficult to achieve both accuracy and hardware efficiency. To address this problem, we propose OutlierTune, an efficient per-channel post-training quantization (PTQ) method for the activations of LLMs. OutlierTune consists of two components: pre-execution of dequantization and symmetrization. The pre-execution of dequantization updates the model weights by the activation scaling factors, avoiding the internal scaling and costly additional computational overheads brought by the per-channel activation quantization. The symmetrization further reduces the quantization differences arising from the weight updates by ensuring the balanced numerical ranges across different activation channels. OutlierTune is easy to implement and hardware-efficient, introducing almost no additional computational overheads during the inference. Extensive experiments show that the proposed framework outperforms existing methods across multiple different tasks. Demonstrating better generalization, this framework improves the Int6 quantization of the instruction-tuning LLMs, such as OPT-IML, to the same level as half-precision (FP16). Moreover, we have shown that the proposed framework is 1.48x faster than the FP16 implementation while reducing approximately 2x memory usage.

Insights into the defect-driven heterogeneous structural evolution of Ni-rich layered cathode in lithium-ion batteries

Recently, considerable efforts have been made on research and improvement for Ni-rich lithium-ion batteries to meet the demand from vehicles and grid-level large-scale energy storage. Development of next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries requires a comprehensive understanding on the underlying electrochemical mechanisms associated with its structural evolution. In this work, advanced operando neutron diffraction and four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques are applied to clarify the structural evolution of electrodes in two distinct full cells with identical LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode but different anode counterparts. It is found that both of cathodes in two cells exhibit non-intrinsic two-phase-like behavior at the early charge stage, indicating selective Li+ extraction from cathodes. But the heterogeneous evolution of cathode is less serious with graphite-silicon blended anode than that with graphite anode due to the different delithiation rate. Moreover, it is revealed that the formation of heterogeneous structure is led by the distribution of defects including Li/Ni disordering and microcracks, which should be inhibited by assembling appropriate anode to avoid potential threaten on cell performance. The present work unveils the origin of inhomogeneity in Ni-rich lithium-ion batteries and highlights the significance of kinetics control in electrodes for batteries with higher capacity and longer life.

Two-Stage Coded Distributed Edge Learning: A Dynamic Partial Gradient Coding Perspective

The widespread adoption of distributed learning to train a global model from local data has been hindered by the challenge posed by stragglers. Recent attempts to mitigate this issue through gradient coding have proved difficult due to the large amounts of data redundancy, computational and communicational overhead it brings. Additionally, the complexity of encoding and decoding increases linearly with the number of local workers. In this paper, we present a lightweight coding method for the computing phase and a fair transmission protocol for the communication phase, to mitigate the straggler problem. A two-stage dynamic coding scheme is proposed for the computing phase, where partial gradients are computed by a portion of workers in the first stage and the remainder are decided based on their completion status in the first stage. To ensure fair communication, a perturbed Lyapunov function is designed to balance admission data fairness and maximize throughput. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed solution in terms of accuracy and resource utilization in the distributed learning system, even under practical network conditions and benchmark data.

CFLMEC: Cooperative Federated Learning for Mobile Edge Computing

We investigate a cooperative federated learning framework among devices for mobile edge computing, named CFLMEC, where devices co-exist in a shared spectrum with interference. Keeping in view the time-average network throughput of cooperative federated learning framework and spectrum scarcity, we focus on maximize the admission data to the edge server or the near devices, which fills the gap of communication resource allocation for devices with federated learning. In CFLMEC, devices can transmit local models to the corresponding devices or the edge server in a relay race manner, and we use a decomposition approach to solve the resource optimization problem by considering maximum data rate on sub-channel, channel reuse and wireless resource allocation in which establishes a primal-dual learning framework and batch gradient decent to learn the dynamic network with outdated information and predict the sub-channel condition. With aim at maximizing throughput of devices, we propose communication resource allocation algorithms with and without sufficient sub-channels for strong reliance on edge servers (SRs) in cellular link, and interference aware communication resource allocation algorithm for less reliance on edge servers (LRs) in D2D link. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the CFLMEC can achieve the highest throughput of local devices comparing with existing works, meanwhile limiting the number of the sub-channels.

Multi-channel Deep 3D Face Recognition

Face recognition has been of great importance in many applications as a biometric for its throughput, convenience, and non-invasiveness. Recent advancements in deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures have boosted significantly the performance of face recognition based on two-dimensional (2D) facial texture images and outperformed the previous state of the art using conventional methods. However, the accuracy of 2D face recognition is still challenged by the change of pose, illumination, make-up, and expression. On the other hand, the geometric information contained in three-dimensional (3D) face data has the potential to overcome the fundamental limitations of 2D face data. We propose a multi-Channel deep 3D face network for face recognition based on 3D face data. We compute the geometric information of a 3D face based on its piecewise-linear triangular mesh structure and then conformally flatten geometric information along with the color from 3D to 2D plane to leverage the state-of-the-art deep CNN architectures. We modify the input layer of the network to take images with nine channels instead of three only such that more geometric information can be explicitly fed to it. We pre-train the network using images from the VGG-Face \cite{Parkhi2015} and then fine-tune it with the generated multi-channel face images. The face recognition accuracy of the multi-Channel deep 3D face network has achieved 98.6. The experimental results also clearly show that the network performs much better when a 9-channel image is flattened to plane based on the conformal map compared with the orthographic projection.

We consider the problem of intelligent and efficient resource management framework in mobile edge computing (MEC), which can reduce delay and energy consumption, featuring distributed optimization and efficient congestion avoidance mechanism. In this paper, we present a Cooperative Learning framework for resource management in MEC from an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) perspective, called CL-ADMM framework. First, in order to caching task efficiently in a group, a novel task popularity estimating scheme is proposed, which is based on semi-Markov process model, then a greedy task cooperative caching mechanism has been established, which can effectively reduce delay and energy consumption. Secondly, for addressing group congestion, a dynamic task migration scheme based on cooperative improved Q-learning is proposed, which can effectively reduce delay and alleviate congestion. Thirdly, for minimizing delay and energy consumption for resources allocation in a group, we formulate it as an optimization problem with a large number of variables, and then exploit a novel ADMM based scheme to address this problem, which can reduce the complexity of problem with a new set of auxiliary variables, these sub-problems are all convex problems, and can be solved by using a primal-dual approach, guaranteeing its convergences. Then we prove that the convergence by using Lyapunov theory. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CL-ADMM and it can effectively reduce delay and energy consumption for MEC.

A Parallel Optimal Task Allocation Mechanism for Large-Scale Mobile Edge Computing

We consider the problem of intelligent and efficient task allocation mechanism in large-scale mobile edge computing (MEC), which can reduce delay and energy consumption in a parallel and distributed optimization. In this paper, we study the joint optimization model to consider cooperative task management mechanism among mobile terminals (MT), macro cell base station (MBS), and multiple small cell base station (SBS) for large-scale MEC applications. We propose a parallel multi-block Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) based method to model both requirements of low delay and low energy consumption in the MEC system which formulates the task allocation under those requirements as a nonlinear 0-1 integer programming problem. To solve the optimization problem, we develop an efficient combination of conjugate gradient, Newton and linear search techniques based algorithm with Logarithmic Smoothing (for global variables updating) and the Cyclic Block coordinate Gradient Projection (CBGP, for local variables updating) methods, which can guarantee convergence and reduce computational complexity with a good scalability. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism and it can effectively reduce delay and energy consumption for a large-scale MEC system.

OODT: Obstacle Aware Opportunistic Data Transmission for Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

In recent years, a large number of smart devices will be connected in Internet of Things (IoT) using an ad hoc network, which needs more frequency spectra. The cognitive radio (CR) technology can improve spectrum utilization in an opportunistic communication manner for IoT, forming a promising paradigm known as cognitive radio ad hoc networks,CRAHNs. However, dynamic spectrum availability and mobile devices/persons make it difficult to develop an efficient data transmission scheme for CRAHNs under an obstacle environment. Opportunistic routing can leverage the broadcast nature of wireless channels to enhance network performance. Inspired by this, in this paper, we propose an Obstacle aware Opportunistic Data Transmission scheme (OODT) in CRAHNs from a computational geometry perspective, considering energy efficiency and social features. In the proposed scheme, we exploit a new routing metric, which is based on an obstacle avoiding algorithm using a polygon boundary 1-searcher technology, and an auction model for selecting forwarding candidates. In addition, we prove that the candidate selection problem is NP-hard and propose a heuristic algorithm for candidate selection. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better performance than existing schemes.

Secure Data Access for Wireless Body Sensor Networks

Recently, with the support of mobile cloud computing, a large number of health related data collected from various body sensor networks can be managed efficiently. However, to ensure data security and data privacy in cloud-integrated body sensor networks is an important and challenging issue. In this paper, we present a novel secure access control mechanism Mask Certificate Attribute Based Encryption for cloud integrated body sensor networks. A specific signature is designed to mask the plaintext, then the masked data can be securely outsourced to cloud severs. An authorization certificate composing of the signature and related privilege items is constructed that is used to grant privileges to data receivers. To ensure security, a unique value is chosen to mask the certificate for each data receiver. The analysis shows that the proposed scheme has less computational cost and storage cost compared with other popular models.

Desynchronization in an ensemble of globally coupled chaotic bursting neuronal oscillators by dynamic delayed feedback control

In this paper, we propose a dynamic delayed feedback control approach for desynchronization of chaotic-bursting synchronous activities in an ensemble of globally coupled neuronal oscillators. We demonstrate that the difference signal between an ensemble's mean field and its time delayed state, filtered and fed back to the ensemble, can suppress the self-synchronization in the ensemble. These individual units are decoupled and stabilized at the desired desynchronized states while the stimulation signal reduces to the noise level. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated by examples of two different populations of globally coupled chaotic-bursting neurons. The proposed method has potential for mild, effective and demand-controlled therapy of neurological diseases characterized by pathological synchronization.

The Availability of Logical Operation Induced by Dichotomous Noise for a Nonlinear Bistable System

Instead of a continuous system driven by Gaussian white noise, logical stochastic resonance will be investigated in a nonlinear bistable system with two thresholds driven by dichotomous noise, which shows a phenomenon different from Gaussian white noise. We can realize two parallel logical operations by simply adjusting the values of these two thresholds. Besides, to quantify the reliability of obtaining the correct logic output, we numerically calculate the success probability, and effects of dichotomous noise on the success probability are observed, these observations show that the reliability of realizing logical operation in the bistable system can be improved through optimizing parameters of dichotomous noise.
