Entanglement between a muon spin and $I>\frac{1}{2}$ nuclear spins

We report on the first example of quantum coherence between the spins of muons and quadrupolar nuclei. We observe this effect in vanadium intermetallic compounds which adopt the A15 crystal structure, and whose members include all technologically dominant superconductors. The entangled states are extremely sensitive to the local structural and electronic environments through the electric field gradient at the quadrupolar nuclei. This case-study demonstrates that positive muons can be used as a quantum sensing tool to probe also structural and charge related phenomena in materials, even in the absence of magnetic order.

Internal Friction Measures to Study Precipitates Formation in EP and N-Doped Bulk Nb for SRF Applications

Main focus of this study is the investigation of thermodynamics phenomena responsible for the High Field Q Slope (HFQS) in SRF cavities by Internal Friction (IF) measurement. Mechanical spectroscopy is, indeed, a well-established technique to study precipitate formations in BCC materials and several works on the effects of impurities as N and O on the Snoek peak have been published so far and will be taken as reference to explain the mechanisms behind the observed dissipation effects. Internal Friction measurements were performed in Belgium at IMCE on Nb rectangular shape samples with different RRR values prepared at Fermilab by using Electro Polishing (EP), N-doping and heat treatments in order to reproduce the same conditions during the standard treatments applied on bulk Nb SRF cavities. From IF spectra, the H trapping mechanism by interstitial atoms (N and O and/or vacancies, depending on the purity level, RRR) can be easily recognized leading to results that perfectly corroborate previous findings on Q-disease, HFQS and RRR phenomena.

Microwave measurements of the high magnetic field vortex motion pinning parameters in Nb$_3$Sn

The high frequency vortex motion in Nb$_3$Sn was analyzed in this work up to 12 T. We used a dielectric loaded resonator tuned at 15 GHz to evaluate the surface impedance $Z$ of a Nb$_3$Sn bulk sample (24.8 at.\%Sn). From the field induced variation of $Z$, the high frequency vortex parameters (the pinning constant $k_p$, the depinning frequency $ν_p$ and the flux flow resistivity $ρ_{ff}$) were obtained over a large temperature and field range; their field and temperature dependence were analyzed. Comparison with other superconducting materials shows that high frequency applications in strong magnetic fields are also feasible with Nb$_3$Sn. In the present work, we report the first measurements about the microwave response in Nb$_3$Sn in strong magnetic fields.

Grain-boundary structure and segregation in Nb3Sn coatings on Nb for high-performance superconducting radiofrequency cavity applications

We report on atomic-scale analyses of grain boundary (GB) structures and segregation in Nb3Sn coatings on Nb, prepared by the vapor-diffusion process, for superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity applications, utilizing atom-probe tomography, high-resolution scanning transmission electron-microscopy and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the chemical composition of Nb3Sn GBs is correlated strongly with the diffusion of Sn and Nb at GBs during the coating process. In a sample coated with a relatively large Sn flux, we observe an interfacial width of Sn segregation at a GB of ~3 nm, with a maximum concentration of ~35 at.%. After post-annealing at 1100 oC for 3 h, the Sn segregated at GBs disappears and Nb segregation is observed subsequently at GBs, indicating that Nb diffused into the Nb3Sn GBs from the Nb substrate. It is also demonstrated that the amount of Sn segregation in a Nb3Sn coating can be controlled by: (i) Sn flux; and (ii) the temperatures of the Nb substrates and Sn source, which may affect the overall kinetics including GB diffusion of Sn and Nb. An investigation of the correlation between the chemical compositions of GBs and Nb3Sn SRF cavity performance reveals that the Nb3Sn SRF cavities with the best performance (high-quality factors at high accelerating electric-field gradients) do not exhibit Sn segregation at GBs. Our results suggest that the chemical compositions of GBs in Nb3Sn coatings for SRF cavities can be controlled by GB engineering and can be utilized to optimize fabrication of high-quality Nb3Sn coatings for SRF cavities.

Surface impedance measurements on Nb$_{3}$Sn at high magnetic fields

Nb$_{3}$Sn is a superconductor of great relevance for perspective RF applications. We present for the first time surface impedance $Z_s$ measurements at 15 GHz and low RF field amplitude on Nb$_{3}$Sn in high magnetic fields up to 12 T, with the aim of increasing the knowledge of Nb$_{3}$Sn behavior in such conditions. $Z_s$ is a fundamental material parameter that directly gives useful information about the dissipative and reactive phenomena when the superconductor is subjected to high-frequency excitations. Therefore, we present an analysis of the measured $Z_s$ with the aim of extracting interesting data about pinning in Nb$_{3}$Sn at high frequencies. From $Z_s$ we extract the vortex motion complex resistivity to obtain the $r$-parameter and the depinning frequency $ν_p$ in high magnetic fields. The comparison of the results with the literature shows that the measured $ν_p$ on bulk Nb$_{3}$Sn is several times greater than that of pure Nb. This demonstrates how Nb$_{3}$Sn can be a good candidate for RF technological applications, also in high magnetic fields.
