On the Balmer spectrum for compact Lie groups

We study the Balmer spectrum of the category of finite G-spectra for a compact Lie group G, extending the work for finite G by Strickland, Balmer-Sanders, Barthel-Hausmann-Naumann-Nikolaus-Noel-Stapleton and others. We give a description of the underlying set of the spectrum and show that the Balmer topology is completely determined by the inclusions between the prime ideals and the topology on the space of closed subgroups of G. Using this, we obtain a complete description of this topology for all abelian compact Lie groups and consequently a complete classification of thick tensor-ideals. For general compact Lie groups we obtain such a classification away from a finite set of primes p.

Stratification and duality for homotopical groups

We generalize Quillen's $F$-isomorphism theorem, Quillen's stratification theorem, the stable transfer, and the finite generation of cohomology rings from finite groups to homotopical groups. As a consequence, we show that the category of module spectra over $C^*(B\mathcal{G},\mathbb{F}_p)$ is stratified and costratified for a large class of $p$-local compact groups $\mathcal{G}$ including compact Lie groups, connected $p$-compact groups, and $p$-local finite groups, thereby giving a support-theoretic classification of all localizing and colocalizing subcategories of this category. Moreover, we prove that $p$-compact groups admit a homotopical form of Gorenstein duality.

Chromatic structures in stable homotopy theory

In this survey, we review how the global structure of the stable homotopy category gives rise to the chromatic filtration. We then discuss computational tools used in the study of local chromatic homotopy theory, leading up to recent developments in the field. Along the way, we illustrate the key methods and results with explicit examples.

Monochromatic homotopy theory is asymptotically algebraic

In previous work, we used an $\infty$-categorical version of ultraproducts to show that, for a fixed height $n$, the symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories of $E_{n,p}$-local spectra are asymptotically algebraic in the prime $p$. In this paper, we prove the analogous result for the symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories of $K_{p}(n)$-local spectra, where $K_{p}(n)$ is Morava $K$-theory at height $n$ and the prime $p$. This requires $\infty$-categorical tools suitable for working with compactly generated symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with non-compact unit. The equivalences that we produce here are compatible with the equivalences for the $E_{n,p}$-local $\infty$-categories.

A short introduction to the telescope and chromatic splitting conjectures

In this note, we give a brief overview of the telescope conjecture and the chromatic splitting conjecture in stable homotopy theory. In particular, we provide a proof of the folklore result that Ravenel's telescope conjecture for all heights combined is equivalent to the generalized telescope conjecture for the stable homotopy category, and explain some similarities with modular representation theory.

Derived completion for comodules

The objective of this paper is to introduce and study completions and local homology of comodules over Hopf algebroids, extending previous work of Greenlees and May in the discrete case. In particular, we relate module-theoretic to comodule-theoretic completion, construct various local homology spectral sequences, and derive a tilting-theoretic interpretation of local duality for modules. Our results translate to quasi-coherent sheaves over global quotient stacks and feed into a novel approach to the chromatic splitting conjecture.

The Balmer spectrum of the equivariant homotopy category of a finite abelian group

For a finite abelian group $A$, we determine the Balmer spectrum of $\mathrm{Sp}_A^ω$, the compact objects in genuine $A$-spectra. This generalizes the case $A=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ due to Balmer and Sanders \cite{Balmer-Sanders}, by establishing (a corrected version of) their log$_p$-conjecture for abelian groups. We also work out the consequences for the chromatic type of fixed-points and establish a generalization of Kuhn's blue-shift theorem for Tate-constructions \cite{kuhn}.

Local duality in algebra and topology

The first goal of this paper is to provide an abstract framework in which to formulate and study local duality in various algebraic and topological contexts. For any stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ together with a collection of compact objects $\mathcal{K} \subset \mathcal{C}$ we construct local cohomology and local homology functors satisfying an abstract version of local duality. When specialized to the derived category of a commutative ring $A$ and a suitable ideal in $A$, we recover the classical local duality due to Grothendieck as well as generalizations by Greenlees and May. More generally, applying our result to the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a quasi-compact and separated scheme $X$ implies the local duality theorem of Alonso Tarrío, Jeremías López, and Lipman. As a second objective, we establish local duality for quasi-coherent sheaves over many algebraic stacks, in particular those arising naturally in stable homotopy theory. After constructing an appropriate model of the derived category in terms of comodules over a Hopf algebroid, we show that, in familiar cases, the resulting local cohomology and local homology theories coincide with functors previously studied by Hovey and Strickland. Furthermore, our framework applies to global and local stable homotopy theory, in a way which is compatible with the algebraic avatars of these theories. In order to aid computability, we provide spectral sequences relating the algebraic and topological local duality contexts.

The algebraic chromatic splitting conjecture for Noetherian ring spectra

We formulate a version of Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture for an arbitrary structured ring spectrum $R$, and prove it whenever $π_*R$ is Noetherian. As an application, these results provide a new local-to-global principle in the modular representation theory of finite groups.

On the comparison of stable and unstable $p$-completion

In this note we show that a $p$-complete nilpotent space $X$ has a $p$-complete suspension spectrum if and only if its homotopy groups $π_*X$ are bounded $p$-torsion. In contrast, if $π_*X$ is not all bounded $p$-torsion, we locate uncountable rational vector spaces in the integral homology and in the stable homotopy groups of $X$. To prove this, we establish a homological criterion for $p$-completeness of connective spectra. Moreover, we illustrate our results by studying the stable homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb{Z}_p,n)$ via Goodwillie calculus.

Algebraic chromatic homotopy theory for $BP_*BP$-comodules

In this paper, we study the global structure of an algebraic avatar of the derived category of ind-coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of formal groups. In analogy with the stable homotopy category, we prove a version of the nilpotence theorem as well as the chromatic convergence theorem, and construct a generalized chromatic spectral sequence. Furthermore, we discuss analogs of the telescope conjecture and chromatic splitting conjecture in this setting, using the local duality techniques established earlier in joint work with Valenzuela.

On localization sequences in the algebraic K-theory of ring spectra

We identify the $K$-theoretic fiber of a localization of ring spectra in terms of the $K$-theory of the endomorphism algebra spectrum of a Koszul-type complex. Using this identification, we provide a negative answer to a question of Rognes for $n>1$ by comparing the traces of the fiber of the map $K(BP(n))\rightarrow K(E(n))$ and of $K(BP(n-1))$ in rational topological Hochschild homology.

Excellent rings in transchromatic homotopy theory

The purpose of this note is to verify that several basic rings appearing in transchromatic homotopy theory are Noetherian excellent normal domains and thus amenable to standard techniques from commutative algebra. In particular, we show that the coefficients of iterated localizations of Morava $E$-theory at the Morava $K$-theories are normal domains and also that the coefficients in the transchromatic character map for a fixed group form a normal domain.

Local duality for structured ring spectra

We use the abstract framework constructed in our earlier paper to study local duality for Noetherian $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-ring spectra. In particular, we compute the local cohomology of relative dualizing modules for finite morphisms of ring spectra, thereby generalizing the local duality theorem of Benson and Greenlees. We then explain how our results apply to the modular representation theory of compact Lie groups and finite group schemes, which recovers the theory previously developed by Benson, Iyengar, Krause, and Pevtsova.

Brown-Peterson cohomology from Morava E-theory

We prove that the $p$-completed Brown-Peterson spectrum is a retract of a product of Morava $E$-theory spectra. As a consequence, we generalize results of Ravenel-Wilson-Yagita and Kashiwabara from spaces to spectra and deduce that the notion of good group is determined by Brown-Peterson cohomology. Furthermore, we show that rational factorizations of the Morava $E$-theory of certain finite groups hold integrally up to bounded torsion with height-independent exponent, thereby lifting these factorizations to the rationalized Brown-Peterson cohomology of such groups.

The character of the total power operation

In this paper we compute the total power operation for the Morava $E$-theory of any finite group up to torsion. Our formula is stated in terms of the $GL_n(Q_p)$-action on the Drinfeld ring of full level structures on the formal group associated to $E$-theory. It can be specialized to give explicit descriptions of many classical operations. Moreover, we show that the character map of Hopkins, Kuhn, and Ravenel from $E$-theory to $GL_n(Z_p)$-invariant generalized class functions is a natural transformation of global power functors on finite groups.

Auslander-Reiten sequences, Brown-Comenetz duality, and the $K(n)$-local generating hypothesis

In this paper, we construct a version of Auslander-Reiten sequences for the $K(n)$-local stable homotopy category. In particular, the role of the Auslander-Reiten translation is played by the local Brown-Comenetz duality functor. As an application, we produce counterexamples to the $K(n)$-local generating hypothesis for all heights $n>0$ and all primes. Furthermore, our methods apply to other triangulated categories, as for example the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a smooth projective scheme.
