On the weakly competitive case in a two-species chemotaxis model

In this article we investigate a parabolic-parabolic-elliptic two-species chemotaxis system with weak competition and show global asymptotic stability of the coexistence steady state under a smallness condition on the chemotactic strengths, which seems more natural than the condition previously known. For the proof we rely on the method of eventual comparison, which thereby is shown to be a useful tool even in the presence of chemotactic terms.

Sublinear signal production in a two-dimensional Keller-Segel-Stokes system

We study the chemotaxis-fluid system \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{array}{r@{\,}l@{\quad}l@{\,}c} n_{t}&=Δn-\nabla\!\cdot(n\nabla c)-u\cdot\!\nabla n,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ c_{t}&=Δc-c+f(n)-u\cdot\!\nabla c,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ u_{t}&=Δu+\nabla P+n\cdot\!\nablaϕ,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ \nabla\cdot u&=0,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0, \end{array}\right. \end{align*} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a bounded and convex domain with smooth boundary, $ϕ\in W^{1,\infty}\left(Ω\right)$ and $f\in C^1([0,\infty))$ satisfies $0\leq f(s)\leq K_0 s^α$ for all $s\in[0,\infty)$, with $K_0>0$ and $α\in(0,1]$. This system models the chemotactic movement of actively communicating cells in slow moving liquid. We will show that in the two-dimensional setting for any $α\in(0,1)$ the classical solution to this Keller-Segel-Stokes-system is global and remains bounded for all times.

Blow-up of weak solutions to a chemotaxis system under influence of an external chemoattractant

We study nonnnegative radially symmetric solutions of the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel whole space system \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{array}{c@{\,}l@{\quad}l@{\,}c} u_{t}&=Δu-\nabla\!\cdot(u\nabla v),\ &x\in\mathbb{R}^n,& t>0,\\ 0 &=Δv+u+f(x),\ &x\in\mathbb{R}^n,& t>0,\\ u(x,0)&=u_{0}(x),\ &x\in\mathbb{R}^n,& \end{array}\right. \end{align*} with prototypical external signal production \begin{align*} f(x):=\begin{cases} f_0\vert x\vert^{-α},&\text{ if }\vert x\vert \leq R-ρ,\\ 0,&\text{ if } \vert x\vert\geq R+ρ,\\ \end{cases} \end{align*} for $R\in(0,1)$ and $ρ\in\left(0,\frac{R}{2}\right)$, which is still integrable but not of class $\text{L}^{\frac{n}{2}+δ_0}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some $δ_0\in[0,1)$. For corresponding parabolic-parabolic Neumann-type boundary-value problems in bounded domains $Ω$, where $f\in\text{L}^{\frac{n}{2}+δ_0}(Ω)\cap C^α(Ω)$ for some $δ_0\in(0,1)$ and $α\in(0,1)$, it is known that the system does not emit blow-up solutions if the quantities $\|u_0\|_{\text{L}^{\frac{n}{2}+δ_0}(Ω)}, \|f\|_{\text{L}^{\frac{n}{2}+δ_0}(Ω)}$ and $\|v_0\|_{\text{L}^θ(Ω)}$, for some $θ>n$, are all bounded by some $\varepsilon>0$ small enough. We will show that whenever $f_0>\frac{2n}α(n-2)(n-α)$ and $u_0\equiv c_0>0$ in $\overline{B_1(0)}$, a measure-valued global-in-time weak solution to the system above can be constructed which blows up immediately. Since these conditions are independent of $R\in(0,1)$ and $c_0>0$, we will thus prove the criticality of $δ_0=0$ for the existence of global bounded solutions under a smallness conditions as described above.

Boundedness in a Keller-Segel system with external signal production

We study the Neumann initial-boundary problem for the chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{array}{c@{\,}l@{\quad}l@{\,}c} u_{t}&=Δu-\nabla\!\cdot(u\nabla v),\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ v_{t}&=Δv-v+u+f(x,t),\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partialν}&=\frac{\partial v}{\partialν}=0,\ &x\in\partialΩ,& t>0,\\ u(x,0)&=u_{0}(x),\ v(x,0)=v_{0}(x),\ &x\inΩ& \end{array}\right. \end{align*} in a smooth, bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq2$ and $f\in\text{L}^\infty\left([0,\infty);\text{L}^{\frac{n}{2}+δ_0}(Ω)\right)\cap C^α(Ω\times(0,\infty))$ with some $α>0$ and $δ_0\in\left(0,1\right)$. First we prove local existence of classical solutions for reasonably regular initial values. Afterwards we show that in the case of $n=2$ and $f$ being constant in time, requiring the nonnegative initial data $u_0$ to fulfill the property $\smallint_Ω u_0\text{d} x<4π$ ensures that the solution is global and remains bounded uniformly in time. Thereby we extend the well known critical mass result by Nagai, Senba and Yoshida for the classical Keller-Segel model (coinciding with $f\equiv 0$ in the system above) to the case $f\not\equiv 0$. Under certain smallness conditions imposed on the initial data and $f$ we furthermore show that for more general space dimension $n\geq2$ and $f$ not necessarily constant in time, the solutions are also global and remain bounded uniformly in time. Accordingly we extend a known result given by Winkler for the classical Keller-Segel system to the present situation.
