Counting bare curves

We construct a class of perturbations of the Cauchy-Riemann equations for maps from curves to a Calabi-Yau threefold. Our perturbations vanish on components of zero symplectic area. For generic 1-parameter families of perturbations, the locus of solution curves without zero-area components is compact, transversely cut out, and satisfies certain natural coherence properties. For curves without boundary, this yields a reduced Gromov-Witten theory in the sense of Zinger. That is, we produce a well defined invariant given by counting only maps without components of zero symplectic area, and we show that this invariant is related to the usual Gromov-Witten invariant by the expected change of variables. For curves with boundary on Maslov zero Lagrangians, our construction provides an `adequate perturbation scheme' with the needed properties to set up the skein-valued curve counting, as axiomatized in our previous work. The main technical content is the construction, over the Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder Gromov-Witten configuration spaces, of perturbations to which the `ghost bubble censorship' argument can be applied. Certain local aspects of this problem were resolved in our previous work. The key remaining difficulty is to ensure inductive compatibilities, despite the non-existence of marked-point-forgetting maps for the configuration spaces.

Skeins on Branes

We study 1-parameter families of holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary in Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We show that the expected codimension one phenomena can be organized to match the HOMFLYPT skein relations from quantum topology. It follows that counting holomorphic curves by the class of their boundaries in the skein module of the Lagrangian gives a deformation invariant result. This is a mathematically rigorous incarnation of Witten's assertion that boundaries of open topological strings create line defects in Chern-Simons theory. Using this theory, we rigorously establish the following prediction of Ooguri and Vafa: the coefficients of the HOMFLYPT polynomial of a link in the three-sphere count the holomorphic curves in the resolved conifold, with boundary on (a push-off of) the link conormal.

Open strings on knot complements

Using skein valued holomorphic curve counting techniques, we give a flow loop formula for the skein valued partition function of the Lagrangian knot complement of a fibered knot (of the $A$-model open topological strings with Lagrangian $A$-branes wrapping the complement) in the cotangent bundle of the three-sphere and in the resolved conifold. For torus knots we show that the partition function in the cotangent bundle localizes on two or three holomorphic annuli and give a corresponding generalized quiver structure for the partition function in the resolved conifold. We connect the formula to the augmentation curve, the representation variety of the knot contact homology algebra of the knot, generated by Reeb chords of its Legendrian conormal and with differential given by holomorphic disks interpolating between words of Reeb chords. The curve admits a quantization as a $q$-difference equation for the generating function of symmetrically colored HOMFLYPT-polynomials of the knot or, geometrically, for the $U(1)$-partition function of the knot conormal. For $(2,2p+1)$-torus knots we show that, after a change of variables, the partition function of the knot complement also satisfies this $q$-difference equation. This gives another geometrically defined coordinate chart for the $D$-module defined by the quantized augmentation polynomial.

Skein traces from curve counting

Given a 3-manifold $M$, and a branched cover arising from the projection of a Lagrangian 3-manifold $L$ in the cotangent bundle of $M$ to the zero-section, we define a map from the skein of $M$ to the skein of $L$, via the skein-valued counting of holomorphic curves. When $M$ and $L$ are products of surfaces and intervals, we show that wall crossings in the space of the branched covers obey a skein-valued lift of the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula. Holomorphic curves in cotangent bundles correspond to Morse flow graphs; in the case of branched double covers, this allows us to give an explicit formula for the the skein trace. After specializing to the case where $M$ is a surface times an interval, and additionally specializing the HOMFLYPT skein to the $\mathfrak{gl}(2)$ skein on $M$ and the $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$ skein on $L$, we recover an existing prescription of Neitzke and Yan.

The skein valued mirror of the topological vertex

We count holomorphic curves in complex 3-space with boundaries on three special Lagrangian solid tori. The count is valued in the HOMFLYPT skein module of the union of the tori. Using 1-parameter families of curves at infinity, we derive three skein valued operator equations which must annihilate the count, and which dequantize to a mirror of the geometry. We show algebraically that the resulting equations determine the count uniquely, and that the result agrees with the topological vertex from topological string theory.

Legendrian surgery

This is an overview paper that describes Eliashberg's Legendrian surgery approach to wrapped Floer cohomology and use it to derive the basic relations between various holomorphic curve theories with additional algebraic constructions. We also give a brief discussion of further results that use the surgery perspective, e.g., for holomorphic curve invariants of singular Legendrians and Lagrangians.

The worldsheet skein D-module and basic curves on Lagrangian fillings of the Hopf link conormal

HOMFLYPT polynomials of knots in the 3-sphere in symmetric representations satisfy recursion relations. Their geometric origin is holomorphic curves at infinity on knot conormals that determine a $D$-module with characteristic variety the Legendrian knot conormal augmention variety and with the recursion relations as operator polynomial generators [arXiv:1304.5778, arXiv:1803.04011]. We consider skein lifts of recursions and $D$-modules corresponding to skein valued open curve counts [arXiv:1901.08027] that encode HOMFLYPT polynomials colored by arbitrary partitions. We define a worldsheet skein module which is the universal target for skein curve counts and a corresponding $D$-module. We then consider the concrete example of the Legendrian conormal of the Hopf link. We show that the worldsheet skein $D$-module for the Hopf link conormal is generated by three operator polynomials that annihilate the skein valued partition function for any choice of Lagrangian filling and recursively determine it uniquely. We find Lagrangian fillings for any point in the augmentation variety and show that their skein valued partition functions admit quiver-like expansions where all holomorphic curves are generated by a small number of basic holomorphic disks and annuli and their multiple covers.

Augmentations, annuli, and Alexander polynomials

The augmentation variety of a knot is the locus, in the 3-dimensional coefficient space of the knot contact homology dg-algebra, where the algebra admits a unital chain map to the complex numbers. We explain how to express the Alexander polynomial of a knot in terms of the augmentation variety: it is the exponential of the integral of a ratio of two partial derivatives. The expression is derived from a description of the Alexander polynomial as a count of Floer strips and holomorphic annuli, in the cotangent bundle of Euclidean 3-space, stretching between a Lagrangian with the topology of the knot complement and the zero-section, and from a description of the boundary of the moduli space of such annuli with one positive puncture.

Ghost bubble censorship

When a Gromov limit of embedded holomorphic curves is constant on some component of the domain, the non-collapsed component must exhibit some degenerate behavior at the attaching points, such as high multiplicity or vanishing of the holomorphic derivative. Here we show the same holds for maps which are only approximately J-holomorphic.

Knot homologies and generalized quiver partition functions

We conjecture a relation between generalized quiver partition functions and generating functions for symmetrically colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials and corresponding HOMFLY-PT homology Poincaré polynomials of a knot $K$. We interpret the generalized quiver nodes as certain basic holomorphic curves with boundary on the knot conormal $L_K$ in the resolved conifold, and the adjacency matrix as measuring their boundary linking. The simplest such curves are embedded disks with boundary in the primitive homology class of $L_K$, other basic holomorphic curves consists of two parts: an embedded punctured sphere and a multiply covered punctured disk with boundary in a multiple of the primitive homology class of $L_K$. We also study recursion relations for the partition functions connected to knot homologies. We show that, after a suitable change of variables, any (generalized) quiver partition function satisfies the recursion relation of a single toric brane in $\mathbb{C}^3$.

Branches, quivers, and ideals for knot complements

We generalize the $F_K$ invariant, i.e. $\widehat{Z}$ for the complement of a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, the knots-quivers correspondence, and $A$-polynomials of knots, and find several interconnections between them. We associate an $F_K$ invariant to any branch of the $A$-polynomial of $K$ and we work out explicit expressions for several simple knots. We show that these $F_K$ invariants can be written in the form of a quiver generating series, in analogy with the knots-quivers correspondence. We discuss various methods to obtain such quiver representations, among others using $R$-matrices. We generalize the quantum $a$-deformed $A$-polynomial to an ideal that contains the recursion relation in the group rank, i.e. in the parameter $a$, and describe its classical limit in terms of the Coulomb branch of a 3d-5d theory. We also provide $t$-deformed versions. Furthermore, we study how the quiver formulation for closed 3-manifolds obtained by surgery leads to the superpotential of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory $T[M_3]$ and to the data of the associated modular tensor category $\text{MTC} [M_3]$.

Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebras for singular Legendrians

The Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebra is a holomorphic curve invariant associated to Legendrian submanifolds of a contact manifold. We extend the definition to Legendrian embeddings of skeleta of Weinstein manifolds. Via Legendrian surgery, the new definition gives direct proofs of wrapped Floer cohomology push-out diagrams. It also leads to a proof of a conjectured isomorphism between partially wrapped Floer cohomology and Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebras with coefficients in chains on the based loop space.

Duality between Lagrangian and Legendrian invariants

Consider a pair $(X,L)$, of a Weinstein manifold $X$ with an exact Lagrangian submanifold $L$, with ideal contact boundary $(Y,Λ)$, where $Y$ is a contact manifold and $Λ\subset Y$ is a Legendrian submanifold. We introduce the Chekanov-Eliashberg DG-algebra, $CE^{\ast}(Λ)$, with coefficients in chains of the based loop space of $Λ$ and study its relation to the Floer cohomology $CF^{\ast}(L)$ of $L$. Using the augmentation induced by $L$, $CE^{\ast}(Λ)$ can be expressed as the Adams cobar construction $Ω$ applied to a Legendrian coalgebra, $LC_{\ast}(Λ)$. We define a twisting cochain:\[\mathfrak{t} \colon LC_{\ast}(Λ) \to \mathrm{B} (CF^*(L))^\#\]via holomorphic curve counts, where $\mathrm{B}$ denotes the bar construction and $\#$ the graded linear dual. We show under simply-connectedness assumptions that the corresponding Koszul complex is acyclic which then implies that $CE^*(Λ)$ and $CF^{\ast}(L)$ are Koszul dual. In particular, $\mathfrak{t}$ induces a quasi-isomorphism between $CE^*(Λ)$ and the cobar of the Floer homology of $L$, $ΩCF_*(L)$. We use the duality result to show that under certain connectivity and locally finiteness assumptions, $CE^*(Λ)$ is quasi-isomorphic to $C_{-*}(ΩL)$ for any Lagrangian filling $L$ of $Λ$. Our constructions have interpretations in terms of wrapped Floer cohomology after versions of Lagrangian handle attachments. In particular, we outline a proof that $CE^{\ast}(Λ)$ is quasi-isomorphic to the wrapped Floer cohomology of a fiber disk $C$ in the Weinstein domain obtained by attaching $T^{\ast}(Λ\times[0,\infty))$ to $X$ along $Λ$ (or, in the terminology of arXiv:1604.02540 the wrapped Floer cohomology of $C$ in $X$ with wrapping stopped by $Λ$). Along the way, we give a definition of wrapped Floer cohomology without Hamiltonian perturbations.

Colored HOMFLYPT counts holomorphic curves

We compute the contribution of all multiple covers of an isolated rigid embedded holomorphic annulus, stretching between Lagrangians, to the skein-valued count of open holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The result agrees with the predictions from topological string theory and we use it to prove the Ooguri-Vafa formula that identifies the colored HOMFLYPT invariants of a link with a count of holomorphic curves ending on the conormal Lagrangian of the link in the resolved conifold. This generalizes our previous work which proved the result for the fundamental color.

Skein recursion for holomorphic curves and invariants of the unknot

We determine the skein-valued Gromov-Witten partition function for a single toric Lagrangian brane in $\mathbb{C}^3$ or the resolved conifold. We first show geometrically they must satisfy a certain skein-theoretic recursion, and then solve this equation. The recursion is a skein-valued quantization of the equation of the mirror curve. The solution is the expected hook-content formula.

Refined disk potentials for immersed Lagrangian surfaces

We define a refined Gromov-Witten disk potential of self-transverse monotone immersed Lagrangian surfaces in a symplectic 4-manifold as an element in a capped version of the Chekanov--Eliashberg dg-algebra of the singularity links of the double points (a collection of Legendrian Hopf links). We give a surgery formula that expresses the potential after smoothing a double point. We study refined potentials of monotone immersed Lagrangian spheres in the complex projective plane and find monotone spheres that cannot be displaced from complex lines and conics by symplectomorphisms. We also derive general restrictions on sphere potentials using Legendrian lifts to the contact 5-sphere.

Physics and geometry of knots-quivers correspondence

The recently conjectured knots-quivers correspondence relates gauge theoretic invariants of a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere to representation theory of a quiver $Q_{K}$ associated to the knot. In this paper we provide geometric and physical contexts for this conjecture within the framework of the large $N$ duality of Ooguri and Vafa, that relates knot invariants to counts of holomorphic curves with boundary on $L_{K}$, the conormal Lagrangian of the knot in the resolved conifold, and corresponding M-theory considerations. From the physics side, we show that the quiver encodes a 3d ${\mathcal N}=2$ theory $T[Q_{K}]$ whose low energy dynamics arises on the worldvolume of an M5 brane wrapping the knot conormal and we match the (K-theoretic) vortex partition function of this theory with the motivic generating series of $Q_{K}$. From the geometry side, we argue that the spectrum of (generalized) holomorphic curves on $L_{K}$ is generated by a finite set of basic disks. These disks correspond to the nodes of the quiver $Q_{K}$ and the linking of their boundaries to the quiver arrows. We extend this basic dictionary further and propose a detailed map between quiver data and topological and geometric properties of the basic disks that again leads to matching partition functions. We also study generalizations of A-polynomials associated to $Q_{K}$ and (doubly) refined version of LMOV invariants.

$\widehat{Z}$ at large $N$: from curve counts to quantum modularity

Reducing a 6d fivebrane theory on a 3-manifold $Y$ gives a $q$-series 3-manifold invariant $\widehat{Z}(Y)$. We analyse the large-$N$ behaviour of $F_K=\widehat{Z}(M_K)$, where $M_K$ is the complement of a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, and explore the relationship between an $a$-deformed ($a=q^N$) version of $F_{K}$ and HOMFLY-PT polynomials. On the one hand, in combination with counts of holomorphic annuli on knot complements, this gives an enumerative interpretation of $F_K$ in terms of counts of open holomorphic curves. On the other, it leads to closed form expressions for $a$-deformed $F_K$ for $(2,2p+1)$-torus knots. They suggest a further $t$-deformation based on superpolynomials, which can be used to obtain a $t$-deformation of ADO polynomials, expected to be related to categorification. Moreover, studying how $F_K$ transforms under natural geometric operations on $K$ indicates relations to quantum modularity in a new setting.
