Field-induced compensation of magnetic exchange as the possible origin of reentrant superconductivity in UTe$_2$

The potential spin-triplet heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits signatures of multiple distinct superconducting phases. For field aligned along the $b$ axis, a metamagnetic transition occurs at $μ_0 H_\mathrm{m}\approx35\,$T. It is associated with magnetic fluctuations that may be beneficial for the field-reinforced superconductivity surviving up to $H_\mathrm{m}$. Once the field is tilted away from the $b$ towards the $c$ axis, a reentrant superconducting phase emerges just above $H_\mathrm{m}$. In order to better understand this remarkably field-resistant superconducting phase, we conducted magnetic-torque and magnetotransport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. We determine the record-breaking upper critical field of $μ_0 H_\mathrm{c2}\approx 73\,$T and its evolution with angle. Furthermore, the normal-state Hall effect experiences a drastic suppression indicative of a reduced band polarization above $H_\mathrm{m}$ in the angular range around $30^\circ$ caused by a partial compensation between the applied field and an exchange field. This promotes the Jaccarino-Peter effect as a likely mechanism for the reentrant superconductivity above $H_\mathrm{m}$.

Absence of Fermi surface reconstruction in pressure-driven overdoped YBCO

The evolution of the critical superconducting temperature and field, quantum oscillation frequencies and effective mass $m^{*}$ in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) crystals ($p$ = 0.11, with $p$ the hole concentration per Cu atom) points to a partial suppression of the charge orders with increasing pressure up to 7 GPa, mimicking doping. Application of pressures up to 25 GPa pushes the sample to the overdoped side of the superconducting dome. Contrary to other cuprates, or to doping studies on YBCO, the frequency of the quantum oscillations measured in that pressure range do not support the picture of a Fermi-surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime, but possibly point to the existence of a new charge order.

Bonding and Electronic Nature of the Anionic Framework in LaPd$_3$S$_4$

Double Dirac materials are a topological phase of matter in which a non-symmorphic symmetry enforces greater electronic degeneracy than normally expected up to eightfold. The cubic palladium bronzes NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$ are built of Pd$_3$X$_4$ (X = O, S) anionic frameworks that are ionically bonded to A cations (A = Na, La). These materials were recently identified computationally as harboring eightfold fermions. Here we report the preparation of single crystals and electronic properties of LaPd$_3$S$_4$. Measurements down to T = 0.45 K and in magnetic fields up to $μ$0H = 65 T are consistent with normal Fermi liquid physics of a Dirac metal in the presence of dilute magnetic impurities. This interpretation is further confirmed by analysis of specific heat, magnetization measurements and comparison to density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through a bonding analysis of the DFT electronic structure of NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$, we identify the origin of the stability of the anionic Pd$_3$X$_4$ framework at higher electron counts for X = S than X = O, and propose chemical tuning strategies to enable shifting the 8-fold fermion points to the Fermi level.

Effect of paramagnetic impurities on superconductivity in polyhydrides: $\textit{s}$-wave order parameter in Nd-doped LaH$_{10}$

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that addition of neodymium leads to significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$: each atomic % of Nd causes decrease in $\textit{T}$$_{C}$ by 10-11 K. Using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, we constructed the magnetic phase diagram of the ternary (La,Nd)H$_{10}$ superhydride, which appears to be surprisingly linear with $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$ $\propto$ |$\textit{T}$ - $\textit{T}$$_C$|. The pronounced suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$ by magnetic Nd atoms and the robustness of $\textit{T}$$_C$ with respect to nonmagnetic impurities (e.g., Y, Al, C) under Anderson's theorem indicate the isotropic ($\textit{s}$-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in the synthesized superhydrides.

Fermi-surface reconstruction at the metamagnetic high-field transition in uranium mononitride

We report on the electronic and thermodynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic metal uranium mononitride with a Néel temperature $T_N\approx 53\,$K. The fabrication of microstructures from single crystals enables us to study the low-temperature metamagnetic transition at approximately $58\,$T by high-precision magnetotransport, Hall-effect, and magnetic-torque measurements. We confirm the evolution of the high-field transition from a broad and complex behavior to a sharp first-order-like step, associated with a spin flop at low temperature. In the high-field state, the magnetic contribution to the temperature dependence of the resistivity is suppressed completely. It evolves into an almost quadratic dependence at low temperatures indicative of a metallic character. Our detailed investigation of the Hall effect provides evidence for a prominent Fermi-surface reconstruction as the system is pushed into the high-field state.

Hysteretic effects and magnetotransport of electrically switched CuMnAs

Antiferromagnetic spintronics allows us to explore storing and processing information in magnetic crystals with vanishing magnetization. In this manuscript, we investigate magnetoresistance effects in antiferromagnetic CuMnAs upon switching into high-resistive states using electrical pulses. By employing magnetic field sweeps up to 14 T and magnetic field pulses up to $\sim$ 60 T, we reveal hysteretic phenomena and changes in the magnetoresistance, as well as the resilience of the switching signal in CuMnAs to the high magnetic field. These properties of the switched state are discussed in the context of recent studies of antiferromagnetic textures in CuMnAs.

Three-dimensional quasi-quantized Hall insulator phase in SrSi2

In insulators, the longitudinal resistivity becomes infinitely large at zero temperature. For classic insulators, the Hall conductivity becomes zero at the same time. However, there are special systems, such as two-dimensional quantum Hall isolators, in which a more complex scenario is observed at high magnetic fields. Here, we report experimental evidence for a quasi-quantized Hall insulator in the quantum limit of the three-dimensional semimetal SrSi2. Our measurements reveal a magnetic field-range, in which the longitudinal resistivity diverges with decreasing temperature, while the Hall conductivity approaches a quasi-quantized value that is given only by the conductance quantum and the Fermi wave vector in the field-direction. The quasi-quantized Hall insulator appears in a magnetic-field induced insulating ground state of three-dimensional materials and is deeply rooted in quantum Hall physics.

Non-monotonic pressure dependence of high-field nematicity and magnetism in CeRhIn$_5$

CeRhIn$_5$ provides a textbook example of quantum criticality in a heavy fermion system: Pressure suppresses local-moment antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and induces superconductivity in a dome around the associated quantum critical point (QCP) near $p_{c} \approx 23\,$kbar. Strong magnetic fields also suppress the AFM order at a field-induced QCP at $B_{\rm c}\approx 50\,$T. In its vicinity, a nematic phase at $B^*\approx 28\,$T characterized by a large in-plane resistivity anisotropy emerges. Here, we directly investigate the interrelation between these phenomena via magnetoresistivity measurements under high pressure. As pressure increases, the nematic transition shifts to higher fields, until it vanishes just below $p_{\rm c}$. While pressure suppresses magnetic order in zero field as $p_{\rm c}$ is approached, we find magnetism to strengthen under strong magnetic fields due to suppression of the Kondo effect. We reveal a strongly non-mean-field-like phase diagram, much richer than the common local-moment description of CeRhIn$_5$ would suggest.

Extremely high conductivity observed in the triple point topological metal MoP

Weyl and Dirac fermions have created much attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. Recently, several additional distinct types of fermions have been predicted. Here, we report ultra-high electrical conductivity in MoP at low temperature, which has recently been established as a triple point Fermion material. Here we show that the electrical resistivity is 6 n-ohm cm at 2 K with a large mean free path of 11 microns. de Haas-van Alphen oscillations reveal spin splitting of the Fermi surfaces. In contrast to noble metals with similar conductivity and number of carriers, the magnetoresistance in MoP does not saturate up to 9 T at 2 K. Interestingly, the momentum relaxing time of the electrons is found to be more than 15 times larger than the quantum coherence time. This difference between the scattering scales shows that momentum conserving scattering dominates in MoP at low temperatures.

Nonintrinsic origin of the magnetic-field-induced metal-insulator and electronic phase transitions in graphite

A detailed magnetoresistance study of bulk and microflake samples of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite with a thickness of 25 $μ$m to 23~nm reveals that the usually observed field-induced metal-insulator and electronic phase transitions vanish in thinner samples. The observed suppression is accompanied by orders of magnitude decrease of the magnetoresistance and of the amplitude of the Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations. The overall behavior is related to the decrease in the quantity of two-dimensional interfaces between crystalline regions of the same and different stacking orders present in graphite samples. Our results indicate that these field-induced transitions are not intrinsic to the ideal graphite structure and, therefore, a relevant portion of the published interpretations should be reconsidered.

Tuning the critical magnetic field of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation in Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$

The structure and magnetic interactions of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation candidates Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ have been studied thoroughly in the literature, but little is known about a possible triplon condensation in the corresponding solid solution Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$. We have prepared various members of this solid solution and systematically examined their magnetic properties in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and at low temperatures down to 340 mK, by means of pulsed field and cantilever magnetometry. From these experiments for $x\in\{3,2.9,2.8,2.7,2.6,2.5\}$, we find that the critical fields of Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$ decrease monotonically as a function of the Sr content $x$. This change is in good agreement with the earlier reported variation of the magnetic interactions in these compounds.

Superconductivity in Weyl Semimetal Candidate MoTe2

In recent years, layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable attention because of their rich physics; for example, these materials exhibit superconductivity, charge density waves, and the valley Hall effect. As a result, TMDs have promising potential applications in electronics, catalysis, and spintronics. Despite the fact that the majority of related research focuses on semiconducting TMDs (e.g., MoS2), the characteristics of WTe2 are provoking strong interest in semimetallic TMDs with extremely large magnetoresistance, pressure-driven superconductivity, and the predicted Weyl semimetal (WSM) state. In this work, we investigate the sister compound of WTe2, MoTe2, which is also predicted to be a WSM and a quantum spin Hall insulator in bulk and monolayer form, respectively. We find that MoTe2 exhibits superconductivity with a resistive transition temperature Tc of 0.1 K. The application of a small pressure (such as 0.4 GPa) is shown to dramatically enhance the Tc, with a maximum value of 8.2 K being obtained at 11.7 GPa (a more than 80-fold increase in Tc). This yields a dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram. Further explorations into the nature of the superconductivity in this system may provide insights into the interplay between strong correlations and topological physics.

Spectroscopic study of the magnetic ground state of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$

We have investigated single crystals and polycrystals from the series Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$, $-0.004 \leq y \leq 0.018$ by electron spin resonance, muon spin relaxation and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our data establish that at lowest temperatures all samples exhibit bulk magnetic order. Slight Fe-excess induces low-moment ferromagnetism, consistent with bulk magnetometry ($\simeq 0.06 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$), Nb--rich and stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ display spin density wave order with small magnetic moment amplitudes of the order $\sim 0.001 - 0.01 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$. This provides microscopic evidence for a modulated magnetic state on the border of ferromagnetism in NbFe$_2$.
