A novel approach for FPGA-to-server data transmission over an Ethernet-based network using the eXpress Data Path technology

In the context of the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN for high-luminosity operation, the particle detectors have to cope with much higher data rates and therefore need to upgrade their data acquisition systems. This upgrade is taken as an opportunity to exchange the currently used highly customized hardware by commercial solutions. Nevertheless, some part of the data processing still needs to be done within Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), requiring the transfer of data between the FPGAs and the commercial servers. This paper reports on a study of direct data transmission from FPGAs to servers via a commercial network. Large data buffers as required for reliable data-transmission protocols are avoided by using an emerging technique named eXpress Data Path (XDP). Based on XDP, the transmission of 5.2 PB (i.e. 2.92 * 10^{12} packets) was achieved within 168 h without a single missing packet.

Gbit/s Data Transmission on Carbon Fibres

Data transmission at the upgraded Large Hadron Collider experiments, foreseen for mid 2020s will be in the multi Gbit/s range per connection for the innermost detector layers. This paper reports on first tests on the possible use of carbon cables for electrical data transmission close to the interaction point. Carbon cables have the potential advantage of being light, having a low activation and easy integration into the detector components close to the interaction point. In these tests commercially available carbon cables were used, in which the filaments had a very thin nickel coating. For these cables data rates beyond 1 Gbit/s over more than 1m with an error rate of less than 10^{-12} could be transmitted. The characteristics of the cables have been measured in terms of S-parameters and could be reproduced with a Spice model. Some outlook on potential further improvements is presented.

Validation Studies of the ATLAS Pixel Detector Control System

The ATLAS pixel detector consists of 1744 identical silicon pixel modules arranged in three barrel layers providing coverage for the central region, and three disk layers on either side of the primary interaction point providing coverage of the forward regions. Once deployed into the experiment, the detector will employ optical data transfer, with the requisite powering being provided by a complex system of commercial and custom-made power supplies. However, during normal performance and production tests in the laboratory, only single modules are operated and electrical readout is used. In addition, standard laboratory power supplies are used. In contrast to these normal tests, the data discussed here was obtained from a multi-module assembly which was powered and read out using production items: the optical data path, the final design power supply system using close to final services, and the Detector Control System (DCS). To demonstrate the functionality of the pixel detector system a stepwise transition was made from the normal laboratory readout and power supply systems to the ones foreseen for the experiment, with validation of the data obtained at each transition.

Optical Readout in a Multi-Module System Test for the ATLAS Pixel Detector

The innermost part of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, CERN, will be a pixel detector. The command messages and the readout data of the detector are transmitted over an optical data path. The readout chain consists of many components which are produced at several locations around the world, and must work together in the pixel detector. To verify that these parts are working together as expected a system test has been built up. In this paper the system test setup and the operation of the readout chain is described. Also, some results of tests using the final pixel detector readout chain are given.
