Dynamics of ion channels via non-Hermitian quantum mechanics

We study dynamics and thermodynamics of ion channels, considered as effective 1D Coulomb systems. The long range nature of the inter-ion interactions comes about due to the dielectric constants mismatch between the water and lipids, confining the electric filed to stay mostly within the water-filled channel. Statistical mechanics of such Coulomb systems is dominated by entropic effects which may be accurately accounted for by mapping onto an effective quantum mechanics. In presence of multivalent ions the corresponding quantum mechanics appears to be non-Hermitian. In this review we discuss a framework for semiclassical calculations for corresponding non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Non-Hermiticity elevates WKB action integrals from the real line to closed cycles on a complex Riemann surfaces where direct calculations are not attainable. We circumvent this issue by applying tools from algebraic topology, such as the Picard-Fuchs equation. We discuss how its solutions relate to the thermodynamics and correlation functions of multivalent solutions within long water-filled channels.

Robustness of the Floquet many-body localized phase in the presence of a smooth and a non-smooth drive

In this work, we investigate how the critical driving amplitude at the Floquet MBL-to-ergodic phase transition differs between smooth and non-smooth driving over a wide range of driving frequencies. To this end, we study numerically a disordered spin-1/2 chain which is periodically driven by a sine or a square-wave drive, respectively. In both cases, the critical driving amplitude increases monotonically with the frequency, and at large frequencies, it is identical for the two drives in the appropriate normalization. However, at low and intermediate frequencies the critical amplitude of the square-wave drive depends strongly on the frequency, while the one of the cosine drive is almost constant in a wide frequency range. By analyzing the density of drive-induced resonance in a Fourier space perspective, we conclude that this difference is due to resonances induced by the higher harmonics which are present (absent) in the Fourier spectrum of the square-wave (sine) drive. Furthermore, we suggest a numerically efficient method to estimate the frequency dependence of the critical driving amplitudes for different drives, based on measuring the density of drive-induced resonances.

Exponentially long lifetime of universal quasi-steady states in topological Floquet pumps

We investigate a mechanism to transiently stabilize topological phenomena in long-lived quasi-steady states of isolated quantum many-body systems driven at low frequencies. We obtain an analytical bound for the lifetime of the quasi-steady states which is exponentially large in the inverse driving frequency. Within this lifetime, the quasi-steady state is characterized by maximum entropy subject to the constraint of fixed number of particles in the system's Floquet-Bloch bands. In such a state, all the non-universal properties of these bands are washed out, hence only the topological properties persist.

The Picard-Fuchs equation in classical and quantum physics: Application to higher-order WKB method

The Picard-Fuchs equation is a powerful mathematical tool which has numerous applications in physics, for it allows to evaluate integrals without resorting to direct integration techniques. We use this equation to calculate both the classical action and the higher-order WKB corrections to it, for the sextic double-well potential and the Lamé potential. Our development rests on the fact that the Picard-Fuchs method links an integral to solutions of a differential equation with the energy as a parameter. Employing the same argument we show that each higher-order correction in the WKB series for the quantum action is a combination of the classical action and its derivatives. From this, we obtain a computationally simple method of calculating higher-order quantum-mechanical corrections to the classical action, and demonstrate this by calculating the second-order correction for the sextic and the Lamé potential. This paper also serves as a self-consistent guide to the use of the Picard-Fuchs equation.

A duality of the classical action yields a reflection symmetry of the quantum energy spectrum

The concept of duality reflects a link between two seemingly different physical objects. An example in quantum mechanics is a situation where the spectra (or their parts) of two Hamiltonians go into each other under a certain transformation. We term this phenomenon as the energy-spectrum reflection symmetry. We develop an approach to this class of problems, based on the global properties of the Riemann surface of the quantum momentum function, a natural quantum-mechanical analogue to the classical momentum. In contrast to the algebraic method, which we also briefly review, our treatment provides an explanation to the long-noticed matching of the perturbative and WKB expansions of dual energy levels. Our technique also reveals the classical origins of duality.

Finite Size Scaling of Topological Entanglement Entropy

We consider scaling of the entanglement entropy across a topological quantum phase transition in one dimension. The change of the topology manifests itself in a sub-leading term, which scales as $L^{-1/α}$ with the size of the subsystem $L$, here $α$ is the Rényi index. This term reveals the universal scaling function $h_α(L/ξ)$, where $ξ$ is the correlation length, which is sensitive to the topological index.

Universal Finite-Size Scaling around Topological Quantum Phase Transitions

The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory, where finite-size corrections to energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We investigate the finite-size scaling away from criticality and find a scaling function, which discriminates between phases with different topological indexes. This function appears to be universal for all five Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes with non-trivial topology in one spatial dimension. We obtain an analytic form of the scaling function and compare it with numerical results.

Instanton calculus without equations of motion: semiclassics from monodromies of a Riemann surface

Instanton calculations in semiclassical quantum mechanics rely on integration along trajectories which solve classical equations of motion. However in systems with higher dimensionality or complexified phase space these are rarely attainable. A prime example are spin-coherent states which are used e.g. to describe single molecule magnets (SMM). We use this example to develop instanton calculus which does not rely on explicit solutions of the classical equations of motion. Energy conservation restricts the complex phase space to a Riemann surface of complex dimension one, allowing to deform integration paths according to Cauchy's integral theorem. As a result, the semiclassical actions can be evaluated without knowing actual classical paths. Furthermore we show that in many cases such actions may be solely derived from monodromy properties of the corresponding Riemann surface and residue values at its singular points. As an example, we consider quenching of tunneling processes in SMM by an applied magnetic field.

Statistical mechanics of Coulomb gases as quantum theory on Riemann surfaces

Statistical mechanics of 1D multivalent Coulomb gas may be mapped onto non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We use this example to develop instanton calculus on Riemann surfaces. Borrowing from the formalism developed in the context of Seiberg-Witten duality, we treat momentum and coordinate as complex variables. Constant energy manifolds are given by Riemann surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. The actions along principal cycles on these surfaces obey ODE in the moduli space of the Riemann surface known as Picard-Fuchs equation. We derive and solve Picard-Fuchs equations for Coulomb gases of various charge content. Analysis of monodromies of these solutions around their singular points yields semiclassical spectra as well as instanton effects such as Bloch bandwidth. Both are shown to be in perfect agreement with numerical simulations.
